Goalies-Alberta, Schneider 6-0-1-0 (42 shots-40 saves). Saskatchewan, Ross 7-2-0-0 (29 shots-25 saves).

This was a game where the PP decided the outcome. The Evil Monkeys were 3-for-3 and the Banjo-Mutts were 0-for-5. Sask outshot them 42-29 on the night, so I would hold out some hope for a split.

This was a cat fight with a crazy ending. I watched the 3rd period. It started tied at 2-2. The Banjo-Cats came out like gang-busters and took the lead. However, the Bluegars mounted a serious rally, yet could not score for the longest time. They finally tied it with just 1:05 left, on a PP and with their goalie pulled. Then with 0:25 left they got the win. This loss for Regina, without even a bonus point which seemed assured, has got to sting. The two teams now have 15 points each, and Regina has five games remaining while MRU has seven (including two against Mac). During the last CW season, Regina was pipped by UBC for the final berth in the closing stages.

Goalies-Calgary, Stankowski 2-1-0-0 (18 shots-17 saves). UBC, Toth 10-1-1-0 (36 shots-36 saves).

The T-irds were quite outplayed in this one. The last two goals were empty-netters, and accounted for 2-out-of-3 3rd period shots on goal. Rylan Toth’s 36-save shutout was the story. Bedrock U had 4 straight PPs in the 3rd period and had sustained pressure the whole time.

Alberta's 3/3 on the pp was the difference.
Noah Philp, who is back with the Bears, made an immediate offensive impact.
I think that they are fine tuning and are the team to beat in CanadaWest.
UBC may just end up winning the CanadaWest regular season, if they do, they would host all playoff series in Vancouver, but they also have had the luxury of have played Trinity the most. Trinity isn't winning a single game this year.

Trinity has one win, over Mac. UBC has 4 wins over Trinity and 2 wins over Mac with 2 games left against Trinity. I don't see UBC better than 50/50 against Alberta, Saskatchewan, Calgary, or even Manitoba.

This was a pretty good battle. The Mutts outshot the Monkeys but once again lacked the finish. I'm guessing another 1st place finish for the Monkeys, given their closing schedule. The Mutts look like they'll have to get through a quarter-final series, which won't be easy.

After that disappointing collapse on Friday night, the Banjo-Cats came out strong, holding a 1-0 lead after one. The game was generally close. However, the Bluegars were 3-for-6 on the PP, Regina was 0-for-7. Bradley Kennedy also recorded a natural hat-trick in the 3rd period. MRU thus launches themselves ahead of Regina and into 5th place. The collar is tightening in Regina.

The ice must have been slanted to the one end in this one. Bedrock U scored two in the 1st, the T-irds scored four in the 2nd, then Bedrock U rallied with five in the 3rd. The last goal was an empty-netter, but still those save percentages took a pounding here. Shots were 28-28.

I caught the Alberta/Sask game last night.
It looked like a usual Huskie/Bear game, soft, lacking a physical perspective found in the AUS match ups, UNB vs X etc...
IMO, Alberta was the better team, looking more skilled.
They did a better job at finding open ice, especially on the pp.
Noah Philp is a big addition for sure, giving them size and skill down the middle. Also Luc Smith and Josh Patterson add some size up front.
IMO, the Huskies looked starved for offence, 2 goals in 2 games, at home vs Alberta.

This series was switched from last weekend in Beautiful British Columbia to this weekend in Friendly Manitoba so as to accommodate the exam schedule at TWU.

Holy Trinity is out of playoff contention, whilst the Bisons need a clean sweep to set up next weekend?s confrontation with the Banjo-Cats.

In roster moves, leading scorer Brett Davis is not expected to play for the Bisons. Devon Skoleski (9th in conference scoring with 14 points in 13 games) has held a hot hand and Noah Basarab is coming off a 3-goal weekend. In any event, TWU has given up 79 goals in 14 conference games, so the Bisons should be able to score.

Since Bison goaltender Liam Hughes went to the ECHL at Christmas, the team needed a 3rd goaltender from the campus and found Zach Bennett, who previously played for the Portage Terriers and Selkirk Steelers in the MJHL and the Nanaimo Clippers and West Kelowna Warriors in the BCHL.

Meanwhile, Trinity's goaltender Talor Joseph was an emergency backup for the Abbotsford Canucks.

After being swept last weekend, the Banjo-Cats are now feeling the pressure. A year ago, it was the Tweety-Birds who rallied to dash their hopes. I suspect that UBC is somewhat flattered by their record. Regina could claim some points this series. They will be allowed limited spectators.

Note that while TWU supplied a goaltender to the Abbotsfor Canucks, Rylan Toth from UBC was loaned to the Vancouver Canucks.

A week ago the Bluegars were in danger of falling out of playoff contention. Now, they have a real shot at a top-4 placing and a chance to host a quarter-final series. Mac looked respectable in the pre-season, with a 2-4-0 record against Alberta rivals. They then started the regular season with a sweep of Regina. Since then, however, all they have is a split with Trinity. With these games holding a great deal of value for the Bluegars, I expect that a tough task awaits Mac.

This is the more renowned of the two Battles of Alberta taking place this weekend, both of which are occurring in Edmontown. Bedrock U have slipped under the radar a bit. If they could pull of a surprise here they could get a top-two placing and a bye to the semi-finals. One would have to think that the Evil Monkeys are in a great spot. They have six games left, and after this weekend have just TWU and MacEwan left to play.

The Evil Monkeys did a good job of stifling the Bedrock Boys in this one. Yet it was just 3-2 late in the 3rd, and was put away with an empty-netter. The win puts the Monkeys into 1st place and in my opinion they have virtually clinched 1st place due to their remaining schedule.

Checked out the Bisons game last night, a disastrous second period put them in a hole too deep to dig out of as they lost 7-5. Funny thing is the Bisons got the puck in the net with the tying goal in the dying seconds, but it was nullified by a too many men call. TWU got the empty netter after that to get 7 goals which is amazing considering that they had only scored 19 all season up to last night.

The Bisons were getting a little too aggressive in the second and neglecting the back end of things which led to many odd man rushes that the Spartans capitalized on. It was hard to reconcile the great first and third periods the Bisons played with the utterly execrable second period. It was a very fast and intense, and surprisingly chippy game with a lot of scrums after the whistles.

Noah Basarab went hard into the boards early on and didn't come back, hope he's OK. Also, Colton Veloso stood out getting 2 on the night. Better luck to the Bisons this afternoon.

How could the Bisons give up 5 goals in the 2nd period to the Holy Trinity? That was bizarre. The Herd led 2-0 after one, then those 5 goals, plus one shorthanded early in the 3rd, made it 6-2 for the Spartans. But the game was far from over. The Bisons seemed to tie the game with 29 seconds left and the goaltender pulled. However, the goal was called off due to too many men on the ice. TWU popped in an empty-netter to close the night.

32 Spadafora - 61 Ree

Quick summary
Man: R. Carlson (11:05 1st) , T. Apetagon (16:46 1st) , C. Veloso (02:54 3rd)
TWU: none
Goalies-Manitoba, Link 3-5-1-0 (29 shots-29 saves). Trinity Western, Berkeliev 0-3-0-0 (45 shots-42 saves).

After the Saturday night disaster, the Herd made a lot of line-up changes. The only players to sit twice were those injured (Harsch and Davis) and the new 3rd goalie (Bennett). The changes worked. The focus was clearly to play defence first. Gone were the odd-man rushes. TWU switched goalies and Berkeliev was sharp, with 42 saves, to keep the score respectable.

Two teams tied:
The following shall determine the final league standings:
1. The higher number of points earned in head to head games between the two teams.
2. If still tied, the better win/loss record in head to head games between the two teams (with regulation and overtime wins treated as equal, and regulation and overtime losses also treated as equal).
3. If still tied, the highest win percentage in league play.
4. If still tied, the best goals for/goals against differential in league play.
5. If still tied, coin toss to be conducted by the CW Managing Director.

Regina won 3-2 and 3-1. However, it appears that head-to-head goal difference makes no difference. Instead they go straight to goal difference in the season where Regina is -7 and Manitoba is -9. It would appear that the Bisons need to win both and then either get at least one point or have close losses against Sask. If Regina and Manitoba split, the Bisons would need a sweep of Sask.

Nice to see the Bisons bounce back in the second game, although they really have their work cut out for them as per @Hollywood3 after squandering the lead in a very winnable game on Saturday. I thought the Bisons were being defensively reckless on Saturday, maybe taking the opponent a little lightly backfired.

I was expecting to see Harsch on Saturday, I didn't realize he was injured. Good for him for landing a spot with Abbotsford although too bad for the Bisons, that is some real defensive skill they will be losing with him gone. I really appreciated his game with the Winnipeg ICE and I'm glad that he'll get a shot at the pros like his former ICE and Bisons teammate Liam Hughes.

The standings say it all - Regina holds a 4 point lead on the Bisons, and these are Regina?s last games. Therefore, the Bisons hold their destiny in their own hands. My major concern is the line-up with the injuries in recent years.

Scratches
1 Buskey - 2 Hilsendager - 3 McCabe
5 Sass - 11 Odelein - 12 Mickoski
16 Schmidt - 29 Campbell

Quick summary:

Man: None
Goalies-Regina, Holtby 7-6-1-0 (20 shots-20 saves). Manitoba, Link 3-6-1-0 (33 shots-30 saves).

The Bisons played hard but they had very little scoring threats in the line-up. They were missing about half of the goals scored in January (8 of 17), and 22 out of 50 goals on the season. In a unique stat, former Bison Brady Pouteau was the only player (other than back-up goaltenders) to have no numbers: no goals, assists, +/-, shots, or PIMs.

The Bluegars are on a roll now. They looked in danger of missing the playoffs, now look at them. They are two points behind UBC. Nolan Yaremko scored his 16th, 17th, and 18th goals of the season.

Meanwhile, the T-irds rode the hot goaltending of Rylan Toth to the conference final in the last season, but he was yanked mid-1st period after surrendering 3 goals on 11 shots. But how does a contender give up 49 shots?

This was a 4-3 game mid-way through the 3rd period. Holy Trinity is showing signs of development. Here's an interesting quote from their coach:
TWU Head Coach Barret Kropf
"It is a season-long learning curve for our guys to figure out what it takes to play at this level. The most unfortunate thing is that there are only 20 games in the season, because we're at that point where we know what it takes to compete at this level. It takes everything to compete at this level. Our goaltending, power-play, penalty kill, everything. There wasn't a single guy who took a shift off tonight, and that was something that we struggled with at the start of the season.

"Even though we lost, we still held the number one team to a one-goal margin for a sizable part of the game.

"A lot of guys haven't played enough hockey in the past two years. I think we're starting to play as a unit by blocking shots and taking penalties. We didn't have that mentality at the beginning of the season.

"The biggest difference throughout the season has been an overall belief in each other. I wish there was more time in this season to keep building on that."

Goalies-UBC, Toth 10-4-1-0 (11 shots-8 saves); Anders 2-0-0-0 (38 shots-35 saves). Mount Royal, Morris 9-2-1-0 (25 shots-23 saves).

This game was not as close as the score would indicate. It was 5-0 with less than a minute left in the 2nd period. These teams are now tied for 2nd but could finish anywhere from 2nd to 5th. UBC's remaining series is their 3rd double-header against TWU. Could TWU finally beat them? Meanwhile, MRU faces Calgary in what should be a tough series.

Looking forward to your takes as a seasoned Bisons watcher.

I recall Mike Sirant saying when the ICE came to town that he was looking forward to taking advantage of the recruitment opportunities that would come with having a WHL team in town. I wonder if he will continue with that philosophy or if he might tweak it a little based on his experience so far.

If we do indeed have a University Cup the end of March, I see this as a big year for CanadaWest. OUA teams haven't advanced to the finals in years, and this year they have been decimated by guys turning pro. In the AUS almost every team has lost their top scorers and other key players to the pros, and won't be fielding full rosters. If there was ever a year for two CanWest teams to make the finals ...

February 11, 2022: Bisons Stun the Mutts

The Bisons could have surely used a performance like this against Holy Trinity or Regina. Even though missing many players, they had enough to play spoiler and ensure that the Banjo Mutts will have to play in the quarter-finals.

Because the Bisons are out, I was primarily watching the Jets-Stars game. I did not make note of the Sask line-up. Here’s how the Bisons lined up:

Goal
35 Murphy (31 Link)

Defence
2 Stewart - 27 Doerksen
5 Schioler - 4 Anderson
11 Carlson
3 Harsch*

Forwards
14 Keane - 12 Jameson - 22 Ostir
26 McCorrister - 10 Skoleski - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 9 Thiessen - 19 Halvorsen
15 Dalke - 29 King - 28 Behun

Scratches
6 Dyck - 16 Hartje - 21 Basarab
23 Davis - 24 Pierce - 25 Sambrook
30 Bennett

* Reece Harsch, supposedly in the AHL, was on the Bison list. I do not recall having seen him on the ice, and away broadcasters don’t always mention who is on the ice for the away team. (However, the Sask crew is better than most.) He was not in the Abbotsford line-up on Friday night. Maybe he was on a “try-out” contract that expired.

In any event, the Bison D was short-staffed. Ryan Carlson, who came to the team as a defenceman but then was moved to forward, was moved back to defence where he played as an old-school 5th defenceman.

This was also Brett Murphy’s first league game in goal. After Liam Hughes turned pro, Jeremy Link moved up to #1 and Murphy moved up from #3 to #2. Link’s numbers were roughly the same as Hughes’, so it made sense to ride him so long as playoffs were in the picture.

Quick summary:
Man: L. Schioler (03:02 2nd) , R. Carlson (10:52 2nd) , L. McCorrister (11:17 2nd)
Sask: J. Kaluski (04:07 3rd) , J. Dmytriw (19:30 3rd)
Goalies-Manitoba, Murphy 1-0-0-0 (31 shots-29 saves). Saskatchewan, Ross 8-4-0-0 (12 shots-9 saves); Kooy 1-1-0-0 (9 shots-9 saves).

All Bison goals were scored in a 2nd period outburst to build a 3-0 lead. Mutt goaltender Roddy Ross was yanked mid-2nd period after the 3rd goal on 12 shots. The shots were relatively low after two periods, 17-16 in favour of Sask. The 3rd period saw a desperation bid by the Fire Hydrant Sprayers. They outshot the Bisons 14-5 and scored twice. The last one was scored with just 30 seconds left and an empty net, so the end result was fairly comfortable but for the last-minute mayhem.

Goalies-Calgary, Stankowski 4-3-0-0 (34 shots-28 saves). Mount Royal, Morris 11-2-1-0 (27 shots-26 saves).

The Bluegars are the hottest team in the CW. They looked much stronger than Bedrock U on Friday night. They ended 2021 with 4 losses in 5 games. Since opening their Christmas presents they are 7-0-0, and five of those against playoff teams. A win on Saturday will give them a first round bye, something they have never had before.

Riley Sawchuk’s goals were his 13th and 14th of the season. Amazingly, he is five behind Nolan Yaremko for the team lead.

Tonight’s results also ensure that the Dinos will play Sask in the quarter-finals. To host that series, the Dinos must get one more point than Sask on Saturday.

The T-irds wrapped up their 5th win of the season over Holy Trinity. Thing is, they’ll have to wait until next week to finish this series. The linked CW stories tell us that:

1. Due to U-Sports moving the U-Cup into exam season (!), the new playoff schedule has quarter-finals on February 25-27, semi-finals on March 4-6, and final on March 18-20.

2. TWU at UBC scheduled for February 12th goes to February 19th at 7:00 p.m. PST.

3. MacEwan at Alberta scheduled for February 11th goes to February 19th at 7:00 p.m. MST.

The T-irds were 2-4-0 in the new year entering this game. They have gone from contending for first to needing help to get second. If they finish third, they will host Regina in the quarter-finals.

So Harsch was not listed on Saturday's roster, leaving just 19 names. The lines were the same as on Friday, and Link replaced Murphy in goal.

Quick summary:
Man: L. McCorrister (03:41 1st) , D. Thiessen (06:39 1st)
Sask: J. Dmytriw (11:41 1st) , G. Ballhorn (00:39 2nd) , G. Ballhorn (03:30 2nd) , J. Kaluski (03:40 3rd) , V. Loschiavo (15:18 3rd) , D. Neuls (17:37 3rd)

The Bisons took a 2-0 lead but ran out of gas. With just 4 defencemen, and a steady stream of penalties, they had no ability to bounce back. The win assured Sask of 4th place and a home quarter-final matchup against Calgary.

There was a tremendous ebb-and-flow to this game. Bedrock U took a 4-1 lead into the 3rd period and were coasting. However, within 9 minutes of the 3rd period it was 4-4. Rather than fold the proverbial tent, the Dinos rallied to score twice, the last one into an empty net. The Dinos knew that they were relegated to 5th place before this one started. The Bluegars are now likely to finish 3rd, since UBC needs just one point against TWU to nail down 2nd.

One weekend to go and CanadaWest will be into playoffs. As mentioned earlier, this conference has a big advantage this year, as they haven't faced restrictions like the OUA and AUS have (stoppage in play) and more importantly haven't been stripped of elite skill, like many of those teams.
In the AUS alone, Acadia, UNB, SMU,UPEI, have all lost elite skill, while some OUA teams have been stripped to the bones!
UBC should beat Trinity, so it looks like Alberta and UBC will get first round bye's.
First round predictions, gotta think Mount Royal gets by Regina and Saskatchewan over Calgary in 3, but this one could go either way. Saskatchewan, with two former NHL draft picks between the pipes, have struggled to find a hot hand. Outside of Alberta, UBC will have home ice for the first time in how many years???? This year, they won't have to beat Alberta to advance to the University cup.
