did anyone really believe that Carlsson was going to go anywhere? and he's established there and is now playing with the cup champs so why uproot your whole life and leave as long as he's well paid? now watch Tavares re-sign with the Isles and teams like the Leafs and Sharks would have gotten all hot and bothered over nothing!

Europe. Somewhere.
Every. Single. Player. Gets. Overpaid.

You people are just flat stupid. Teams *HAVE* to give term. It's basically a reward for services rendered, not a projection of the future. It works this way in every league.

And if there's a pending UFA on your team you want to give the max term to ... it's the #1 D on the team that just won the f'ing Cup, in LARGE part thanks to him.

Great player, but, as is with most all of these long term contracts, Caps will be sorry about this one is a few years.

This space.
If he keeps having years like he did this past season, he isn't over paid. They lock up their #1 defenseman for the remainder of their core's careers, essentially. By the time this contract is near the end, OV and Backstrom will be near/at the end of their careers, Kuznetsov will be likely exiting his prime, I'm sure they're not going to regret having an aging d-man making too much by then.

If you have a defenseman like Carlson, you keep them. We see bad contracts every single year but this isn't one of them. As a Pens fan I see this as a necessary move by the Capitals, it's a no brainer really. Good for them, boring for the average fan who enjoys free agency.

Newsflash: There are like 5 GMs in this league who have enough job security to look 5+ years into the future. The rest doesn't have a reason to care. By the time this contract is a real problem it's probably another GM's job to deal with it, and if they get another Cup out of it who the f*** cares at that point.

Lets be realistic it was time to pay up for Carlson. In the terms it needs to be considered that this does not include any RFA years. These RFA years were favourable to the Caps.

It is a fair deal and given JC skillset and injury histrory he should not wear out as much as other D Man. I would have prefered a year shiorter or 0,5 Mio. $ less, but that is not gonna effect the strategy.

Curious what all of the keyboard warriors on here think the Caps should have done if this is too much for Carlson. Let him walk and play Madison Bowey as their 2RD? Trade assets to replace a guy like Carlson which costs you players/picks and cap space?

Bring him in at 7 years and 7.9 mil per. It's always that extra year and token cash that sinks these deals!

Seabrook was about 3 years older and showing it when he received 6.875.

Contracts are not alike.

Seabrook will be 39 at the end of his deal vs. Carlson 36.

Those 3 years will be complete trash and a HUGE difference. Carlson should be fine. Even if he declines early it won’t be 5 plus years of being grossly overpaid.

It's market price but still too much. I think they're gonna regret this.

Explain this to me please?? Realistically speaking, how do the Capitals replace an all situations 25 min puck moving right shooting defenseman who lead the NHL in points from defense and who has been part of one of the league's best pp's for years? A player who's primary pp role is to pass the puck correctly to the team's primary source of goal scoring.

IMO, they either keep Carlson or take a significant step backwards. Would love to know your opinion on how they avoid that step backwards. Remember any new player must be a right shot.

Curious, how much do you think a John Carlson is worth in a trade?

By the end of the playoffs, the media was saying that Carlson should have gotten a lot more play for the Norris Trophy. A lot of people that didn't pay attention to the Caps past Ovechkin were surprised at how good this player was in the final two rounds of playoffs. Should he lead the NHL in points from defense again next season, he will get the Norris. Meanwhile there is a large chunk of the posting base here that doesn't see him as much more than a nice player. Not a star, not elite and certainly not Norris caliber.

All the people who are saying its too much $/term need to understand a few things
There is no one out there to replace him currently. Not via free agency anyway. More importantly Caps need a righty defenseman who can play on pp and pass to ovi. How many of those are available even through a trade? The likes of karlson and doughty would cost too much to trade and they both have very little left on their contracts before they sign new deals $10m plus. Caps had no choice but to resign him.

Its a lot of money but OEL re-signing for 8.25 put the Caps in a corner.

They cant simply let go their best defenseman (who just had a combined 88 points this year) because its going to cost a lot of money. Aside from 2016, hes never missed major time due to injury and is 28.

Norris is one thing... But still, we need to think about this. It's a UFA signing, free of assets.

Say his value would be a 1st, a 2nd, a prospect and a #4 defenseman. Might be pretty fair, right? And let's say his actual, fair contract is 6mil per year.

Would you trade away 2 mil of cap space for a 1st, 2nd, a prospect and a #4 defenseman? Of course. That's why it's stupid to say this contract isn't good.

Its a lot of money but OEL re-signing for 8.25 put the Caps in a corner.
BTW, this is a steal in comparison to that OEL contract.

John Carlson is 28. Brent Seabrook was 3 years older to start his extension, was not as good a player, and the cap went up a lot. Bad comparison.

This is one of those "had to happen" contracts. I don't think Carlson would get much more out on the market, so the 8th year had to sell him. And WAS couldn't risk his loss.

You got me there pal.. No idea.. with that type of contract? I like Carlson and I was hoping Flyers would target him but he is not 8M dollar d-men imho. 6-6.5 but he is making as much as Hedman or Shea Weber... Contracts are getting out of hand and Caps bought Carlson at the very high price.
