I am one of his harshest critics but this is a good contract

I still consider him in the 10-15 calibre range of dmen and you simply cannot lose that type of defensemen to free agency without recouping a lot of assets back.

This is also why John Tavares 13m cap hit is okay. Chicago spent 21m on Toews and Kane when the cap was lower but they also drafted both guys with top 3 picks. A team with cap space is able to get an elite top 10 center with the pedigree of Tavares for 0 asset except cap-space

He's not bad defensively. This has always been one of the dumbest HF rumors.

The ****ing guy was on our shutdown pairing in the playoffs when he was like 23 years old. Before he grew the offensive talents that he has today.

What a load of crap. He gets the bulk of offensive zone starts, while Orlov and Niskanen get the bulk of D zone starts and the bulk of minutes 5v5. By what metric is Carlson good defensively?

Orlov/Niskanen was your shut down pairing

You’re missing my point. He was has played the shutdown role in previous years well. Just because he didn’t last season doesn’t mean he’s bad defensively.

That has more to do with Orlov/Niskanen being more trusted breaking out of the defensive zone; Carlson played a lot with Bowey with 54.6 oZS%.

Since Carlson debuted in the 09-10 season, 1989 skaters have appeared in NHL games. Of those, only three have had a higher P/G than Carlson while also getting more SH TOI/G:

Alex Pietrangelo
Chris Pronger
Scott Niedermeyer

Just throwing that out there.

8 years may seem too long, but that's what needed to be done to keep him so I don't fault the Caps for it.

$8mil is steep, but he's a 60+ point d-man in a league moving toward offensive d-men so he was always going to get paid.

Decent contract, not a steal, but not terrible like Seabrook's which was terrible the day it was signed.

Just wait until Tavares' agent manipulates his way into a bit more money from NYI.

July 1st is gonna be a bloodbath of overpayment. Hopefully Holland stays out of it.

At even strength Orlov/Niskanen are the TOI leaders and get tougher matchups. Carlson is certainly not a top pairing D man in the classical sense of the word, if you want to argue that he is being used as one.

No shit, he's #1 on both the PP and PK. What is he supposed to play 35 minutes a game?

Orlov and Niskanen also have great chemistry and Orlov is by far the Caps most dynamic LD. It's not like they're sheltering Carlson because he sucks, he was the #1 shutdown D for years. Team just got other top 4 defensemen and evolved

Some things:
-He played 24 minutes per game last season. That's not even close to 30, much less 35.
-He was 3rd on the team in short-handed TOI among the D
-Not only did he play fewer minutes at ES, but he also played in easier circumstances (more offensive starts, easier competition)

I'm not saying he's bad, because he's certainly not. He just wasn't playing in a typical top pairing role when he put up his 68 points, and that contract may be a little rich due to him having a career year.

reminder for Caps haters

NHL.com - Stats

PP, PK, 1D, RHD, only 28 years old, won the cup, had a contract for 6 years under 4M$, when we need to score a goal or protect the one goal advantage, he's on the ice, plays like 25 minutes per night. When Niskanen was hurt in the first part of the year, played 30 minutes per night.

8x8 is perfect. When non Caps fans are not happy, it means it's a good contract.

I'm usually more impressed with Orlov or Niskanen until Carlson blasts a shot in to the net. Say what you want but he's without a doubt the caps most important d-men.

I also think by the time Ovi and Backstrom are in their late 30s/40s the caps will be rebuilding so I really don't think the contract will be an issue

Too many years, too much money.
But it is how it is; you have one awesome season = huge pay day.

---

First six years as a pro, he was always kind of player with tons of potential
but never really was able to reach to that potential, then in the 14-15 season
he scored 55 points (12 goals) had a tremendous season next season until
he was injured, thou continued his great season after injury to the play-offs
where he was ppg, but the next season was meh, bad(ish) mediocre at best,
it all started with a bad world cup experience.

Last season, he really exploded, offensively...not sure how he looked in the own end thou.
Interesting to see what he is able to do next season, can he improve? is he able to have
multiple successful seasons in the years to come? or....was the last season highlight of his twilight
whens he get a big pay day and sails towards sundown afterwards and waits his career's end?

Those numbers are a reflection of his skills relative to his teammates, not his skills relative to the rest of the league. Niskanen got injured in a game on October 13, and was out for the next month. During that month, Carlson played 27:45 a night, leading all Caps in ES TOI and SH TOI, and trailing only Ovechkin in PP TOI. He notched 11 points in those 14 games, tied for the most on the team and right on pace with his per game production the rest of the season. Carlson is absolutely capable of being the all-situations #1, the presence of Niskanen just means it'd be wasteful to use him that way. Flavor of the week + Carlson is a significantly bigger offensive threat than Orlov+Niskanen, so why not set up the Carlson pairing to exploit their strength? The only conclusion you can draw from looking at usage out of context is that [Carlson's offense minus Niskanen's offense] > [Carlson's defense minus Niskanen's defense].

While there might be a bit of air in this deal, I fail to see any other options the Caps might have had. They had to keep Carlson, or else they would have been down to a top pairing and a collection of maybes as their D corps.
