Matthews and McDavid on the world cup preview on ESPN just agreed that Jones might be the fastest player on the team.

That was a great example of what too much arrogance can do in sports. Team Europe had scouted Team USA well and looks like Team USA didn't do any scouting at all. I truly hope that dump and chase is not the only offensive strategy Torts has in his sleeve because that doesn't cut it anymore in the NHL.

Oh look, the guy who I wanted as head coach just shocked the guy I didn't want as head coach. How about that.

But can you dissect why? As for the Blue Jackets that is the question as in digging out of the prison with a spoon. What happened on the ice level. Otherwise 'the reasoning' just drifts depending on currents.

Speaking of ads, in first game of the hockey season I now remember how live ice hockey has been ruined perhaps forever.

...

Best goalie in the world sits at bench while another over-rated Laser-Ermine hoovers around.

Murray and Jones were solid tonight. Their ratio of completed passes to turnovers has got to be ridiculous.

They can be better at getting pucks on net though. They're looking for passes at times when it'd be more productive to just fling a long wrister towards the net, like Parayko has been doing.

Jones and Murray were very good defensively and in transition. According to twitter, they had ridiculous fancy stats. Getting pucks to the net was indeed the only part missing.

All in all last nights game was the worst slaughtering of Finnish National Team I've ever seen . Even worse than FIN-USA in Vancouver. In Vancouver USA destroyed Finland in 15 minutes and surfed around the ice for 45 minutes. Last night Team NA molested Team Finland for 55 minutes. Just pure annihilation. Oof :help:

Soviet Union was far better in the day but encouraging play from Finland nevertheless given that opponent was stacked with players who were NHL first-liners already last season and some should propably have been in their proper national teams. Maybe U-21 NA would have suited better as the opponent having puck control elements didn't aid the Finnish cause. As the Canadian studio said of these collective teams: everyone has played national team hockey at least in the juniors so it isn't that big of a leap to gather around.

Finland then on the other hand has been bitten by this American disease. Team management boasts of names but names of no experience and GM is a rookie with no experience. Goalie decisions are dictated by friendship, not merit. I don't know if there is ever turning back from this madness and commercialism.

The Leading One has spoken:

"It aches my veins to say that (the few) classic lag zone delayed starts the Lions played were more stupid than stupid. So we reach the second point of my critique. For some incomprehensible reason head coach Marjamäki has reached the conclusion that on top of the world in a small match box you cannot attack through the centre. With this false decision Lions got their club bath."

...

"Marjamäki has made the mistake in thinking that a puck played to the flanks is safe in relationship to the opponent's interception. It ain't! Only a puck played through the centre is, according to universal ball sports laws, a safe puck. In ice hockey a puck played to the centre, in the moment of an interception is defended by five players. Now the reader's lamp lights up!

A puck played to the flank, if it lost, is only being defender by one or two players!"

I recommend going through the original text with Google Translate since it is the best analysis of the NA-Finland game by far.

The scrolling ads on the boards is absolutely annoying! I hope NBC doesnt start doing it and that ESPTMZ never gets hockey coverage again

We are now seeing the future of NHL games on TV. you can bet that ESPN is raking in the money with this type of advertising, and thus it is only a matter of time before others do the same

Good point I saw brought up on the business of hockey board:

How much does this hurt the value of in-arena dasherboard signage?

Jones and Murray were looking great again tonight defensively and in transition. Again they were only just kind of "meh" offensively, at least compared to most of the other Team NA D.

Jones was getting lots of plaudits - Murray as usual was under the radar, but it was very easy for me to tell that his skating and strength are much improved over the summer. His skating is maybe back to normal, while I've never seen him so strong.

Really? I kept reading on twitter from multiple people (albeit early in the game) that Jones was really struggling.

(I didn't watch)
