Marner waits until next summer IMO. He's a confident enough kid to bet on himself improving next year and is under zero obligation to sign right now. Today he would probably get $7M, next summer and 75pts later he's probably looking for $8M.
If the leafs were smart, they would offer him at least $7.5 to mitigate the risk of him having a breakout year next year. The possibilities are terrifying. If he were to score between 90 and 100 pts, they will be paying a lot more than that. My guess is they don't

His value depends on his ability to carry his own line as a Centre.

I’m not sure we know that.

If Tavares comes it doesn’t matter.

"The question, though, is what Nylander’s asking price is on his next deal. And a safe bet seems to be something in the $6.5-million range. If that seems too high, consider that similar point producers this past season such as Alexander Radulov, Nicklas Backstrom, Joe Pavelski and Filip Forsberg earn somewhere between $6 million and $7 million per season. Add in the seven-year, $42-million extension that the similarly aged and lower-producing Nikolaj Ehlers earned from the Jets, too, and even $7 million doesn’t seem a stretch for Nylander"

Based on the inflated contracts we are seeing so far, I think Nylander will be closer to the 8 million per season mark at this point.

Why? Ehlers was drafted one spot later than Nylander in the same draft, has very similar NHL numbers, and his contract would start at the same time as Nylander's. They're also both smallish skilled wingers.

Very very similar circumstances, and Ehlers signed 7 years for 6M. Why on earth would Nylander be worth 8M?

Never see him in pictures with the guys. Doesn't seem to hang out with them outside the rink. Is he a diva and not liked or just a loner?

Only one of them was a rumor at the draft.

Yeah, he sits home alone hating everyone who cant understand his god given right to be the center spot every time every where. And that is for the better seeing as all the guys on the team hate his guts. True story.

bridge a 4 yrs contract at 4.5 a year like kucherov got ......

4 reasons
1) if he really is that valuable hes an RFA that you can sign later, so you get 12 years instead of just 8
2) his trade value is higher at a lower cap hit if you trade him
3) hes a goddamn winger .. arguable the lowest impact position on the ice why is everyone trying to pay him like a center ? JT Miller should be a comparible.
4) hes not a goal scorer ! hes a 25ish goal player who might hit a PPG rate if hia center scores 40+ goals. how is that worth 7-8 mil a year ? leaf fans overvalue nylander. hes not a top 50 player in the league why would he get paid like one ?

if you pay him 8 mil you will end up like edmonton and pay young guys too much. you have control of the players for 8 years, WHY would you use up all that time on 1 contract ? its sooooooo dumb, if you contact a player for 4 years you still control then afterwards. even if the player becomes more valuable the 1-2 mil cap hit is a mute point because you saved the same amount on the span of the bridge contact

Would a Johnny Hockey contract be too much? Similar players.

Plus their is natural inflation as the cap goes up. Contracts signed even last year will be a bit less than newer ones.
I see WN getting 7.5 x 6

Yeah, the sooner the better for getting the best deal, before the market jumps again in relation to the rising cap.
Though, I suspect he and his reps know this

Ehlers signed before anybody knew what the cap would be. He probably could have gotten a little more himself. Nylander has the benefit of the higher cap in his back pocket.

Projections a year ago were it rising to ~78-82M, and it's going to 80M isn't it?

I don't think the cap increase is relevant if you're doing an Ehlers Vs Nylander contract comparison. The contracts will start in the same year, and the actual cap ceiling is within the range it was expected to be when Ehlers signed.
