I don't think there's any way of looking at it where Marleau comes out on top of Howe. He was a prodigy that could still hack it in his 50's. This is simply an nhl record that Howe would have easily if he didn't miss years/play in another league. That said, Marleau deserves credit for (likely) becoming the ONLY other player to play as many nhl games. I'm sure if Gordie was alive he'd handle the situation with class and would be the 1st person to congratulate Patty.

This is actually crazy. I was marveling at Doughty's consistency throughout his career, missing only 19 of 938 possible games played throughout his 12-year NHL career. He'll reach 1000 games played at 31 if he plays in 81 games next season, but Marleau's only missed 35 games total! Bonkers.

I know a lot of those missed games early on was because Darryl Sutter scratched him and rode him pretty hard. Ended up being good for him because he has played a 200 ft game ever since.

You don't have to be on par to be a legend. Brad Park is a legend. Bob Probert is a legend. Glenn Hall is a legend. Should Patrick Marleau break that record, he will be remembered for a long time. Might be a very long time until someone can get to his numbers. A couple of generations, possibly.

It's a stained legacy. This is some real hockey shit, surpassing Mister Hockey himself. Therefore it should be based on actual achievements, this is closer to Tomas Plekanec's 1000th game. He was washed up and useless but Habs decided to carry him over the milestone. This is player being dragged on to a historical achievement and it doesn't honour the game.
