I decided not even to respond to the original poster because I knew it was a lost cause/troll job, but the fact is Fox is honestly closer to a defensive stalwart than offensive stud. He makes good offensive plays that lead to points, and occasionally they’re even a bit flashy, but most of his points accumulate due to sheer intelligent puck movement and ability to read the game. Adam Fox is a guy who I’d rate 9/10 defensively, 8/10 offensively and 11/10 IQ. If he had the offensive skill of guys like Carlson to go with the rest of his tools, he’d be the McDavid of defenseman. His offense, while great, is almost the least noteworthy part of his game.

It’s staggering that there are still people who don’t know this. You’d think when a guy is a Norris nominee and someone is a big hockey fan that they’d take the time to learn about the nominees. Maybe now that he’s the winner of the award fans of hockey will want to understand how the best defenseman in the league this year plays the game.

At least back in his Blackhawks days he was a smooth skater with a good breakout pass but a disaster in front of his own net.
Not sure how he is with the Isles.

Nurse (He can at least be physical, poor IQ)
Girard, Theodore, Dumba don’t belong here, they’re offensive minded dmen but they’re not incompetent defensively. I don’t get how you could say them but not someone like Hughes. You even said Myers on Vancouver but he’s not even someone who would be considered an offensive minded dman.

Nurse definitely doesn’t belong with those others, he’s not even an offensive specialist. He plays top 3 minutes in the NHL with very little PP time. The whole he doesn’t have hockey IQ was put to rest by the strides he made this season.

+/- is almost purely a team stat. Play more minutes on a crap team and you will have a worse +/-

Kulikov was a -26 here and a +6 the following year with Winnipeg.

Bogosian didn't have a single positive +/- season until he left Buffalo.

Ryan O'Reilly was a -23 in his final season in Buffalo. For the Blues he won a Selke and was a +22.

Taylor Hall was a -21 for the Sabres and a +15 for the Bruins in the same shortened season.

Montour was a -13 for the Sabres and a +8 for the Panthers in the same shortened season.

I can't believe people even look at +/- still.
These Buffalo stats are pretty horrifying. The team is a black hole.

Shattenkirk was decent when he was younger. He's not exactly old, but whatever he had before - it's gone. He's the nicest guy, always have a hard time criticizing him.

You just don't see Dmen who are both the best offensively and defensively like Niedermayer/Pronger/Lidstrom anymore. The closest is Hedman.

Theodore.

I'd actually give Shea Theodore a pass.
His coverage has come along quite a bit since his Anaheim days where it seemed his compass just had one direction: North.

I'd say with a little more seasoning, and while he may never be a "great" defenseman, he will be a more all around defender with an accent on offense.
Will turn 26 next month, I'd say he will be who he is by 27 or 28 with that 'slow burn' development.

Michael Del Zotto wouldn't be a NHL player if he hadn't come in and immediately post seasons of 37 pts and 41 pts in his first 3 years

Offensive defensemen (who suck defensively) are easily the most overrated players in the league. For every goal they help generate they let up tons of chances and goals against. Karlsson was so overrated for a while but now the other foot has dropped.

Karlsson's other foot dropped. Literally. Injuries did him in. He played a very active style of defense, so losing that mobility was a huge hit.
