Jake Gardiner definitely deserves mention. I remember Carolina putting him in against my team at the end of the season and it was immediately OMG-please please please play that guy some more. Such a refreshing break from the rest of their D. I seldom notice opposing players that specifically, but he really stood out.

… so he sucks defensively unless he has a great DFD to clean up after him?

Partially, Tanev had his back when Hughes jumped up in the play. No one covered Hughes this year when he jumped up in the play, he is a offensive minded defenseman. The Canucks lost their best defensive defenseman in Tanev, the whole team looked lost without him. I was just stating that currently Hughes sucks at defense, but he is young, a great skater, and could learn the defensive aspect of the game better. Having a good stay at home defensive defenseman on the roster will help Hughes and the team immensely.

I know we’re mostly talking current day players, but if we go back 20 years Phil housley was the example. Burns is probably closest now

I would say Mike Matheson fits into this category but maybe not to the extremes of some of the others mentioned.

I mean….that’s pretty much how offensive d-men work. They take chances to make plays and are usually at their best when paired with a safe and dependable partner who can minimize the damage when those risks back fire.

I always felt Shattenkirk was a weird pick here and just kind of a meme. He's a bad turnover or two that just kind of turned into something people just say because they've heard it.

Since 2012, he ranks in the top 60 amongst all defensemen (3000 mins played) in goals against per 60. For somebody so atrocious defensively, he's been around for ten years and opponents can't score on him.

You know what the problem is with Shattenkirk? You can't show me one significant timeframe over the past decade where his even strength OFFENSE is above replacement level.

He has a good a shot and was really good at QBing the powerplay in his prime, but at 5v5 he's basically the opposite of what people say he is.

Hi bestie I missed you :(

Karlsson in his prime would play like the last 5 minutes of playoff games when defending a lead.

This is a great thread to filter people who don't know what they are talking about.

San Jose EK is bad aka the current version, it aint 2015 any more. He is slow to get back to his own after a turn over forcing a pass, avoids any and all physical contact, out of position or 2 seconds too slow, and timid with the poke check. EK65 is playing like a 3 million dollar PP specialist atm.

He's still better than Brent "Starfish" "What's Icing" Burns.

Karlsson was actually checking people this season, though his good period lasted only about five weeks. Outside of that he was either bad or unplayable awful.

I was talking about his prime when his biomechanics still worked.

Most offensive D look really awkward (positioning wise) when they get pinned in their own zone. Like they're completely out of their element.

Ill take a solid 2-way D any day over a pure offensive defensemen for this reason.
