South Carolina and Texas A&M is a protected "rivalry" for some reason.
The SEC has always had permanent cross divisional opponents. Well, at least since they expanded in the early 90s. South Carolina's was Arkansas, but once Mizzou joined the SEC and were stupidly placed in the East, Mizzou and Arkansas became the permanent cross divisional matchup.

But yes, aTm and South Carolina is definitely a manufactured "rivalry"

Citadel goes ahead 24-21. GT still has a chance though.

And play for a trophy.

It's bizarre, neither school has a history with one another and never played each other until 5 years ago. A lot of the South Carolina fans and alumni I know think it's bizarre too and would rather play Auburn, Ole Miss, LSU, etc. As @CanesInducedComa pointed out the SEC has the cross-divisonal yearly games but with expansion many of the original school fans would rather do away with them, frankly I don't think many SEC fans particularly like having Missouri and A&M anyways.

What the hell was Pitt's coach thinking there? Deserved that shank for such a stupid call.

It's because of the dumb divisional set up once aTm and Mizzou came into the SEC.

Mizzou got Arkansas as it's permanent cross divisional game, which makes sense other than they fact they should both be in the SEC West.
South Carolina got aTm. And the rest stayed the same.
Auburn-Georgia
Florida-LSU
Ole Miss-Vanderbilt
Alabama-Tennessee
Miss State-Kentucky

Now GT misses the FG but Citadel calls timeout, although to be fair the kicker kind of nonchalantly ran up to kick the ball.

Now its tied.

Here is how the trophy links the two schools from wikipedia:

"The trophy is named after James Butler Bonham, who was a South Carolina native and graduate of South Carolina College which is the prior name to the University of South Carolina. Bonham fought and died in the Battle of the Alamo which is why he became the missing link between the two schools to play for."

South Carolina has never been relevant enough to have nor demand a big rivalry. That's like Indiana wanting to be a rival with Ohio State or Michigan.

When's the last time Indiana won 11 games or finished in the top 10 though? Because the SEC made this change after South Carolina was coming off 3 11 win seasons in a row.

I mean, until DeShaun Watson appeared they had a good one going with Clemson, even in down years before Watson they usually gave Clemson a good fight.
