It's not really MB's style to give up quality picks for a 4th line rental center. Staal has less points than Danault and I doubt he's as good defensively at this age. So he'd be our 4c.
That’s the exact position I expect MB will upgrade - especially a veteran 4C, who can occasionally step up and fill in for a few shifts if Suzuki & KK are struggling within a game and solid on faceoffs

He will if he can do so without giving up assets. It's not his style to give up assets to fill such a role. For example he gave up a 5th for Edmundson and a 4th for Allen - and those weren't rentals. Perhaps he'll do another 7th for Torrey Mitchel type of deal.

If we're really going good, MAYBE he'd be willing to give up a 3rd for Staal. But another team might outbid that.

I think he’s going to make a big move out of left field - simply given the division (Habs have a very strong chance to make it out of the division), and opportunity with many teams not being able to compete for assets because ownership won’t allow spending which should have a secondary impact of depreciating market cost

Maybe unpopular trade idea...

To Montreal:
Hall (50% retention)
Montour (50% retention)

To Buffalo:
Drouin
Byron
Kulak (or Mete)
+2nd/3rd if necessary

Plus for Sabres, although they take on Byron, he can potentially add some leadership (has a letter in Montreal) and they get potential young longer term asset in Drouin to shake up core without giving up long term piece.

Plus for Habs, they upgrade Drouin with a more dangerous LW threat for Suzuki/Anderson. More cap flexibility long term. Add Montour who can help the 3rd pairing/PP as a right shot D. Romanov can go back to LD and stop having confusion on the ice of who to cover.

Hall - Suzuki - Anderson
Toffoli - Kotkaniemi - Gallagher
Tatar - Danault - Armia
Lehkonen - Evans - Perry

Edmundson - Petry
Romanov - Weber
Chiarot - Montour

No chance MB trades core players from the roster at trade deadline, it’ll be about adding to the roster

what team is paying danault 4 million after this season? probably a short list of teams, let them take him , habs should take that money and go after a better player, at any position . myself i would trade danault asap.
3.5 is my highest offer.

Hall has shown himself to flake out when the going gets tough. Will get eaten alive here.

Bergevin won't be allowed to make a block buster unless Molson signs off on it. I'd expect him to add a 4th line center and another PMD before the deadline. Plenty of cheap(ish) options out there that won't break the bank. Staal, Glendenning, Dunn, etc. type deals that would cost some b level prospects and picks that we have a ton of.

He made his big moves in the summer so I expect minor tweaking and that's about it.

I'm not a fan of Chiarot at all. Kulak neither.

The Edmundson-Petry pairing needs to stick, they've been amazing together. Edmundson is +26. Weber away from Chiarot should do better. I really think we need to go after a top 4 LD. Ekholm would be a dream.

Ekholm-Weber
Edmundson-Petry
Romanov-X

Are you willing to give up a 1st and a 2nd or a gokd prospect for Ekholm?

I think that will be the market price. We'll see. It's steep, but if he can be re-signed it might be worth it.

I just don't know what the trajectory of his career is well enough. Does he project to be good until HF he's 35? Or just until he's 32 or 33? Has he already shown signs of declining? Etc...

Perhaps but feel like the upside is worth the 'risk' as there's no contractual obligation. He'll only replace Drouin in the lineup, the guy has 40 goals over his 210 games with Montreal (15 goals/80 games pace). One of the Habs biggest weaknesses is lack of gamebreaker who can create something out of nothing. Suzuki has shown flashes but Hall has proven recent history. Feel like he'd be a better fit in the roster too as Drouin literally can only look good stapled to Suzuki. Hall might be able to move around the lineup since he's basically a one man show (which is one of his faults).

I can't see any big trades, but two lower cost guys I would target would be Eric Staal and Sami Vatanen. I also think Kyle Palmieri would be a great add, but think the price might end up getting unreasonable as i can see a lot of teams after him.

Staal can move up at C if Suzuki/KK/Danault are struggling offensively, or can be put on the wing if Tatar is a ghost again in the playoffs. He's also got great stats in his career in the playoffs.

Vatanen can move the puck and can play either side on D.

Drouin - Suzuki - Anderson
Toffoli - KK - Gallagher
Tatar - Danault - Armia
Byron - Staal - Perry

Edmundson - Petry
Romanov - Weber
Chiarot - Vatanen

Hall is no longer a game breaker...and he’s done nothing in NJ, AZ and now Buf to shed the “loser” title

He’s still better than Tatar and his game translates well to the Habs style of play (speed, aggressive forecheck). He also shows up in the playoffs which we all know is the opposite of what Tatar does.

Yes to the price. I don’t even know if I’d re-sign him honestly. This year and next year is good enough for me.

(He won a hart in NJ)
Outlier season, there’s a reason NJD dumped him and no one went after a player of his caliber in the off-season, despite a solid playoffs....he’s quickly been stigmatized as a “loser”
