The question isn’t whether it’s a smart move, the question is does Bergevin do it. Those aren’t one and the same.

Any examples?

Bergevin should of pushed hard for Shea Theodore but it's too late now. Gostisbehere? Why would Philky trade him?

There's not many out there that's available.

Ghosty ? he is a 70 points D..... he's an untouchable.
Shea, MB wanted Shea + Suzuki, he said so during an interview but Vegas didint want.

How would you trade Radulov at $7m per for 5-6 years after just signing him?
If you realize that you dont want to be mediocre and dont want to sign Markov and Radulov, you trade them at the deadline. Nobody would have guessed that Bergevin messed up this bad.

How come ? The team was doing very well back then. It is just very bad that they lost in the first round vs the Rangers.

would be great to pull a 1-for-1 trade for Shaw...

To Mtl
Gagner

To Vancouver
Shaw

would ensure Domi/Drouin stay at wing and minimize the roster necessity to keep JKo...

Drouin - Gagner/JKo - Tatar
Domi - Danault - Gallagher
Lekhonen - Pleks - Armia
Hudon - JDR/Peca - Byron
Peca, Scherbak

if JKo doesn't stick past 9 games, we're set
if he does, and there aren't any early injuries, Gagner/Peca/Pleks/JDR battle it out for press box/ice time duties

best case, by putting him in a top-6 role with solid wingers, Gagner puts up good numbers and at deadline or in offseason becomes a decent trade chip (since he'd only have 1 year left on his deal)... exactly the reclammation type project a smart GM would be all over to prop up and then gain rebuild assets for.

Rather have DLR than Gagner.

yeah as I wrote after you replied, I'd rather take a chance that Gagner can be a 40 to 50 point center again than a chance DLR somehow learns how to play in the offensive zone.

If Gagner works out, he could fetch a 1st at next year's deadline. If he doesn't, well we have the same thing we have with DLR.

I was talking about how Bergevin couldn't manage the cap situation in order to keep his best players. He also couldn't find any kind of replacement when he did lose these players.
