People thought he had value?

Eh, yes, is that a trick question? Below the findings after a lazy search. Some people truly are delusional.

  • Carolina Receives: Kasperi Kapanen, Garrett Sparks, Connor Carrick and a 2019 2nd round pick. Toronto Receives: Justin Faulk

Him (Bowey) for Connor Carrick + a AHL decent prospect? Similar players, both may just need a change of scenery

Carrick had some value after all. If waivers were not pending I think he could have fetched a 3rd/4th it seems.

Polak is definitely not better right now he is so awful. Worst preseason of anyone on the team by far. Even the AHL guys. He is not a fit for the Stars system at all which is why they acquired Carrick

Carrick had a bad preseason but he could defs play. Leafs had sort of better option but it's not like Carrick couldn't play and was traded more replaced. Good luck not sure how he's gonna do but hopefully we'll, hes a fitness monster.

Carrick isn't bad. He just doesn't have the size , speed , shot to put him ahead of anyone.

Credit to him for putting in the work this off season; but unfortunately he really doesn't possess what's needed to be a full timer

Carrick will do well in Dallas. No pressure and I see him easily starting as the 5th or 6th dman

Youre in for a surprise if you think Carrick is better. He couldnt make the Leafs defense, which everyone says is awful. Take that as a hint as to his capabilities.

As long as he can skate and has some sort of offensive ability he is better than Polak.

Polak hasn't been the same since his leg injury and he was never a good skater to begin with.

I always find it funny when I see guys always thrown in trade proposals here either waived or traded for nothing.

Doesn't it make sense.
Fans see that said player is on the way out...

Thinking that we could convert a player on the way out to something of real value (even if this asset was bundled with a bunch of other lesser assets) does not make sense.

Aurora, On.
A 7th rounder near the very end of the entire draft is still an asset.

Good on toronto for getting something.
We've been doing well at the bottom of the draft lately.

In the opening night roster we have Brown (6th), Johnsson (6th) and Sparks (7th) who were all taken late.

Pierre Engvall had a nice showing at camp and will play NHL games someday I believe. He was also taken in the 7th round.

Carrick was an international quality junior that made an NHL playoff team out of camp at 19 and was a full-time player on an playoff defense at 22.

There's a lesson here, but it isn't the one most think it is (Herp derp lol people once thought Carrick had value)

*Hint one- what drives the value of proven quality defenseman (especially rhd)
*Hint two- what causes hint one?

He had fallen to 5th at RHD and abut 10th overall on the Leafs defence. He wasn't a Leaf this year. For Carrick's sake, wish him well in trying to secure an NHL job and ice time. The Marlies are loaded too with Dmen. (not necessarily all NHL prospects), so there wasn't a spot for him there either.

No he didn't. In terms of skill he was easily #4. Holl was only kept because he's cheaper. Unless they genuinely thought Holl was better than Carrick, which is laughable.

The Braun value is similar to what they were asking for, with or without Carrick.

Really, that is what Faulk is worth too... If you take out the stupid inflation some stupid GM's pay for any sort of defenseman. Carrick is like the 3rd or 4th most valuable piece in all of those trades.

This is also a lot less than Carrick is worth. The Leafs sold him at his lowest because they were going to end up waiving him otherwise.

Leafs have no cap issues this, so 1.3m Carrick or a 675,000 Holl makes no difference to the Leafs. And Ozhignokov can double his 925,000 salary with bonuses. You really think the Leafs would jeopardize their season for a few dollars?

Good gamble from Dallas. He's a competent bottom pairing defenseman right now. He works hard and he's pretty feisty. He skate really well as well. Not the best defensively and can lose board/front net battles a lot but will make up for it in terms of moving the puck up the ice. He doesn't have that great of a point shot and his offensive abilities at the NHL level are pretty average.

With that said, he had the perfect opportunity in pre-season to win a wide open spot and completely blew it. He struggled quite a bit.
