I agree when you are talking about picking between 38th to 40th vs picking around 97th (as of today) or picking in the say 139th t0 148th range (as of today) Of course it makes sense that you would rather pick higher at 38th then 40th but that 4th vs 5th rounder could be as high as 51 spots higher.

Not sure about your math, Habs will at best finish 3rd worst, so that's pick number 3 in round 4, the only way we get the 5th round pick is if LA misses the playoffs, so at best they finish 15th (16 teams that make playoffs, will pick after them). So the biggest difference will be 31 + 15 - 3, which is 43.

I was going off where the pick could end if they make the playoffs or not. Still 43 is a lot of picks to drop back vs 2 in the 2nd.

The Kings are 1 point away from giving us our 4th pick back.

That's great news.

There are two more games Romanian: Thursday April 5th against the Wild and Saturday April 7th against Dallas.

Can't they be dispensed from having to earn the point simply by certain other teams losing or getting a tie?

If 2 out of the 3 happen (or just the Anaheim one), they are in:
Anaheim goes 0-2-1 or worse
Colorado goes 1-0-1 or worse
STL goes 1-1-1 or worse (2-1-0 also work if they get a win in the SO)

10 picks in the top 130 when we get our 4th back from the Kings. We’re going to be busy on draft day! Plus there will be Patch in play more likely.

Habs scouting needs to be solid!

NYI passed the Hawks!

LA unlikely to be passed!

Fingers crossed for Coyotes win!

Only negative is Canucks look like they will lose to VGK.

Strongly disagree. I'd take the better 2nd every time.

So, I can't find the stats, but I would wager that the percentage difference of getting an NHL player between the shift in 2nds (~40th to 38th) vs the shift from 5th to 4th (~150th-100th) is larger for the latter. There is probably a near 0% in the former, and 1-2% in the latter. Again, couldn't find the % for anything but whole rounds.

If LA wins against Minnesota on Thursday, they clinch. San Jose has clinched and they're at 98 points. LA is at 96.

However, if Blues lose in regulation tomorrow night against Hawks, then all LA will need is 1 point to get to 97, as the most the Blues can get after a regulation loss tomorrow is 96.

Doesn't really matter if Blues win all their games. As long as LA gets 1 more point they beat Colorado out of the last wildcard spot at 97pts, as they hold the tie-breaker.

Seems LA may not need to get that 1 point we were talking about earlier if Blues lose in any fashion.

One thing in LA's favour is that St. Louis and Colorado play each other Saturday night.

I'm happy both conditions have been met so Habs now get, at the moment of this writing, Pick #96.

I'm all for Hawks losing to make that 2nd pick higher. It should take precedence over a 4th round pick. However, the Hawks pick will vary from a few spots, whereas the 5th becoming a 4th is a 49 spot upgrade (Pick #145 to Pick #96).
