As Pens fans say? This guy's been in the league for almost 13 years. 6 years in LA. 7 years in Ohio. But somehow fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins are sitting on some gigantic league wide secret with said player because he's played 55 games with the club? What.

The JMFJ Effect

Yeah, here's a guy making literally the exact same point 8 years ago.

The MF stands for Minus Four.

He is terrible.

JR's worst move since coming to Pittsburgh.
Hunwick wasn’t much better, and acquiring Reaves was a big mistake. He’s had a lot more bad moves recently than good ones.

Those are relatively minor. This was good money for a bad player

The thing is that you really shouldn't need analytics to tell JJ is a bad player. It's so obvious on the eye test too (if you are not clueless about hockey of course and your eyes are working properly).

Dean Lombardi back in 2010 said so...
Dean Lombardi: Jack Johnson Is Learning His Craft…Belatedly
“This guy has never had any coaching [at the University of Michigan],” Lombardi said. “Jack just did what he wanted.”
“Michigan is the worst.” Lombardi added. “For hockey people, if you’ve got a choice between a kid—all things being equal—one’s going to Michigan and one’s going to Boston University, you all want your player [going to Boston University]. Michigan’s players—[head coach] Red [Berenson] doesn’t coach. It’s ‘do what you want.’ He gets the best players in the country.”

“It was a big risk for us to trade for him,” said Lombardi. “There was all that hype and stuff because he’s just like a thoroughbred. It’s like looking at a horse and saying wow! But then he gets on the track and he has no clue how to run the race. He might even run in the wrong direction. That was Jack. [He was] really raw.”

JJ has had horrendous advanced stats dating all the way back to his LA days.

How is this a surprise to anyone who even passively follows hockey?

Everybody knew Jack Johnson was terrible when the contract was signed.

Maybe they hoped he could work out as well as Daley did.

There's no evidence that Crosby pushed for him to be signed.

Seriously, just because Crosbys friends with him, idiots think he told JR to sign. If that was the case, guys like Armstrong and Fleury would've never been traded from the pens. Fact of the matter is, JR drafted Johnson in 05 and has always been a fan of him and still liked his game enough to sign him for 5 years. Ol man Jimmy is losing his fast ball, first Hunwick now Johnson, yikes!

For all his issues, Johnson for a year or two might have been fine....but five years was ridiculous for such a flawed player?!?!

I'm convinced teams are doing him a favor by signing him.

He's been known bad since LA. Statistically sticks out like a sore thumb.

But Selke Crosby can help him improve his defense.

It's Sid's friend on Sid's team. It's good for Sid's morale so why change that? Pens do what Sid wants not Rutherford.
