Someone at South Carolina evidently watched Napier do everything in his power to throw a game against App State.

Imagine thinking, on 4th and 2, that running backwards 35 yards for a self-safety was the best available play.

People aren't giving enough context on his decision. His long snapper had snapped it over the punters head 3 times already. I'm not talking barely over the punter's head, I'm talking so far over his head it's amazing App State didn't score 21 points based on that alone. He also screwed up another snap on a FG. He was literally choosing between giving App State a potential TD recovery on a botched snap and a safety, that's literally how incompetent their long snapper was that night. People have said he could have pooch punted it but I imagine none of them ever played football as you don't just decide to pooch punt one game when your team probably hasn't practiced it ever. I've never seen anything like it other than maybe Rick Ankiel suddenly getting the yips 2 decades ago.

Gotta hand it to Shane Beamer. I don't know much about him but that was a pretty damn good introductory press conference. He definitely has his work cut out for him though.

It was basically a more polished Will Muschamp introductory press conference, only Beamer doesn't have the stink of failing at a major program before... mostly because he's been unable/afraid to get even a coordinator job or even a head coaching job at a smaller program. It will all come down to whether he can recruit and hire assistants that can coach the modern game of football. Muschamp had the former down (before this year anyway), but was literally a football dinosaur afraid to leave his comfort zone. Beamer should at least not be afraid to install a modern offense given he's coming from Oklahoma, but he's still a complete unknown for the most part.

Hopefully for Beamer, he nails his DC/OC choices. IIRC South Carolina has the #1 QB for next year? committed, that should be among his first phone calls, to make sure that kid is still on board.

Even in context of the long snapper issue, which is one of the craziest “yips” scenarios I’ve seen, that safety call was a case of a coach absolutely outsmarting himself. He gave App 2 points, the ball, and pushed them back all of 15 yards from the original scrimmage, with a chance to win the game on the final drive. That’s galaxy-brain coaching gone wildly wrong.

I wonder how many good options SC had in their search. Its an SEC job but, with Florida returning to an East contender, the best SC will do is 9-3. Losses to Georgia, Florida, and Clemson. 9-3 will be okay but fans will get tired of a 3rd place East finish and a Liberty bowl birth. Of course UF or UGA could have a down year but they may get an Bama or TAM draw in the west. SC isn’t the same draw as Florida, UGA or Clemson for recruits.

Vandy should look at all 3 service academy coaches. They're the only team in the SEC I think that could make the option work for them. They're never going to recruit better than the bottom 3rd of their conference so they don't have to worry about how top recruits would perceive an option team.

It blows my mind Georgia Tech, a 3rd rate school in the 4th weakest football division that primarily runs the option for the very reason you stated, produced Calvin Johnson AND DeMarius Thomas to the NFL. Just crazy.

Calvin Johnson played under Chan Gailey, whom I don't remember being an option coach. Thomas did too, although he went through the Gailey to Paul Johnson coaching change

They had been struggling all night to run the ball in the wet and cold weather. I agree that he should have just went for it but that wasn't actually the first time I had seen this call. IIRC, Spurrier did the same thing about 10 years ago in a game except he didn't have a long snapper with the yips, and it worked out for him as well.

Gunnar Stockton, but he's a 2022 recruit. He's a 5 star on most recruiting services but I'm not sure if he's the consensus #1 like say a Trevor Lawrence. Still one of the top QB prospects in his class but the biggest drawback is that he plays in a fairly weak Georgia high school division since he goes to a small town/low enrollment HS. He has family connections to Mike Bobo, the current OC who may or may not be back next season, and Connor Shaw, whose brother coaches him in HS. He's probably a lock if they keep one of those two around.

Calvin Johnson played under Chan Gailey though. Demaryius Thomas played for both Gailey and Paul Johnson but in the season prior to getting drafted he still somehow managed to put up a 1100+ yard season averaging 25 yards a catch in the triple option. That's definitely pretty insane.

I think that's where I got confused, I definitely remember a highlight where GT faked a run, the QB chucked it and DT got a 60 yard touchdown by burning the DB in man coverage.

And more recently, randomly one of the more productive WR turned TEs in Darren Waller. All 4 years in the option with frankly pretty meh stats, but hey he learned to block!
