That Goalie Dressed for Them? (Goalies who ONLY backed up for a team)

There was almost always a Junior, Senior or Minor Pro Goalie sitting in the stands who could be called upon regardless of whether it was the Home/Away Goalie who got injured. Barring that, a couple of Trainer's were also "practice goalies" so they were available in a crunch... sometimes in desperate straights a skater would fill-in. Lots of amusing stories & 1 Game (or a period or two) Wonders who found themselves called into duty. Even when after the rules mandated 2 Goalies be dressed, there were times when last minute emergency call-ups were required, CIAU University players etc.

Thanks. Seems incredible though with those goalies playing with no masks and less padding to not have a regular 2nd goalie on the bench? Like parachuting without a back-up chute?

Pretty much... requiring that Goalies (and skaters for that matter as Rosters were smaller back then) would often play sick or hurt. The fear, borderline paranoia that if you
didnt play through the pain, someone could easily come in & steal your job. Back in the day no Goalie was safe and really only a few Superstar Forwards & Defencemen.

Two new additions, thanks again to Perttu for these.

Travis Scott - Florida Panthers (2003/2004)
Dressed as backup to Luongo February, 2004.

Mike O'Neill - Los Angeles Kings (1999/2000)
Dressed as backup Marcel Cousineau November, 1999.

Alright, I should just do this - these are the instances currently in my database (I haven't added anything from these threads yet, although I will of course cite the source when I do).

On my site, I keep this under REGULAR SEASON (and POSTSEASON) STATISTICS, so the consequence is that I keep track (or try to) of each season where a goaltender dresses but does not play. I mention this because this produces a list below that's larger than you want it to be for your purposes (for instance, Marcel Cousineau 2000-2001 Los Angeles is on my list, but he should not be on any of your lists).

One of the reasons I'd not posted this yet was because I was farting around with data tricks to minimize the list, but haven't had very much spare time over the last weeks (not even for what's clearly a rudimentary data query).

So here's the full list (of what I have currently logged on hockeygoalies.org) of goalies who dressed for a club during a regular season but did not appear in game action. Starting on the next post, since it's long.

A more problematic thing that I'm working on (and have barely started) are that I want to include all "zero GP" postseason efforts for goaltenders - so, for instance, David Aebischer played one minute in 2001 for Colorado, and 34 minutes in 2002 for Colorado. He gets a line score in his NHL statistics for all to see.

He played zero minutes for Colorado in 2003, but dressed in all games. Aebischer doesn't get a line score in his NHL statistics, although I'd argue that the effort in 2001 and 2003 was comparable. My goal is to ultimately fill in all of those gaps (and would love the help).

With that said, here are the people in my database so far who: (1) had zero GP seasons in the playoffs for a team, and (2) didn't appear at all - even as a backup - in the regular season. For instance, Tristan Jarry this past spring with the Penguins.

NAME | SEASON | TEAM
Corsi Jim|1979-80|MIN
Emery Ray|2011-12|FLO
Gudlevskis Kristers|2014-15|TBL
Jarry Tristan|2015-16|PIT
Krahn Brent|2006-07|CGY
Marsters Nathan|2005-06|ANA
McElhinney Curtis|2013-14|TBL
McLeod Jim|1970-71|CHI
Michaud Alfie|2000-01|VAN
Simpson Shawn|1989-90|WSH
Thiessen Brad|2009-10|PIT

This list is comparable to the regular season list above (for instance, Michaud didn't appear on the bench at all for the Canucks in 2000-01 *until* the playoffs, and then didn't appear on the ice).

I'll add that one reason I do season-by-season is because I'm fascinating by sweater numbers as well, and oftentimes it's these zero GP seasons where goaltenders have ones that differ from what we're used to seeing.

If or when the NHL releases game sheets, especially for the playoffs you may be in for a treat. Playoff teams would call up juniors and minor leaguers to practice with the team. Bit of a reward for the season. They would be playoff game eligible and would have numbers assigned in the event they were asked to play, especially if they skated in the pre game warm-up.

Issue that is unknown is whether these number assignments made their way onto the game sheets either directly or as an addendum.

Nice work by the way. The micro data is fascinating. Will try to find some pictures/links to illustrate the info provided above.

Agreed - I'm very much looking forward to that data, largely due to what you mention.

I do make a demarcation (similar to Benchwarmers) between goaltenders who actually dressed on the bench (and were ready to play if needed) and those who didn't go that far, but ultimately some day I'd like to expand to everyone.

Hasek, Roy, Plante, and Sawchuk get plenty of press - I'm more interested in highlighting the Bloskis, the Simpsons, and the Sevignys (1979 of course).

Pre Game

Further to the above information, March 22, 1955, first game of the Boston vs Montréal Canadiens Semi Finals at the Montréal Forum.

The roster rule at the time was that a team could dress one goalie. However it was permissable for a team to dress a second goalie instead of the last skater and alternate the two goalies.

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=S4ItAAAAIBAJ&sjid=X5kFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=6968,3550248

The above link shows a pre game warm-up picture of Canadiens Al Dewsbury and Charlie Hodge in uniform(RHS).

Below the picture you see the Forum Hockey Summary as published in the Gazette.
Sub goalies are listed.

The game stories with notes refer to Al Dewsbury dressing but not seeing any action. No reference to the Bruins sub goalie dressing.

Neither Hockey-Reference, nor hockeyDB show Al Dewsbury as playing for the Montréal Canadiens. Nor does a preliminary check of the various hockey numbers sites.

Scroll(left) back one page and you will see the game story and summary of the Leafs vs Red Wings, first game of the other semi-final. Key omission is that the sub goalies are not listed in the line-up segment of the summary.

Different norms for different arenas? The situation requires an explanation. Fact remains that the information was out there, distributed somehow to the press from the teams. Doubt that it was directly from the Canadiens as part of the game night media package since the info would have to originate and be signed by both coaches for the purposes of game control.

Will see what other info I can dig up.

Doctor No,

Thanks for posting your list! Went through it and for this thread it brought two new names:
Mathieu Chouinard - 2000/01 Ottawa Senators
-Oct. 2000 backup to Hurme when Lalime was injured
Tyler Moss - 2003/04 Edmonton Oilers
-Feb. 2004

The only name that stuck out to me on the list was Rob Madore, I don't think he was ever recalled to the Maple Leafs.

Canadiens1958

Thats some fascinating stuff! Great find.

Thanks! Good call on Madore - knowing the way that I collected the 2015-16 data (as I went), I'm sure that I added it to my OneNote but typed NHL instead of AHL (and of course, Toronto is Toronto). Later, of course, Madore played for AHL Toronto.

I confirmed via the HSP raw data files that Madore didn't dress at the NHL level in 2015-16.

Moss' exact dates were February 18, 21, 23, and 25, 2004.

I don't have exact dates for Chouinard for some reason, although I wrote down that there were six games.

Interesting stuff about Dewsbury!

This would be a heck of a lot easier (but also a heck of a lot less interesting) if we'd adopted the European style notation of "GD" vs. "GP" awhile back.

Pre Game II

Pre game picture of the second game warm-up, 1955 Semi Final Boston vs Montréal. Plante and Hodge both in uniform , seems that Hodge would have worn #24 as the camera caught what looks like the tip of the $ on his back. .

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=TYItAAAAIBAJ&sjid=X5kFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=7207,3929879

Again sub goalies listed but no mention of Henry for Boston. Scrolling left one page sees that similar information not available for the other series.

Interesting that the H_R listing of player numbers does not show Charlie Hodge as wearing #24 in 1955.

Trust you also caught that the summary list stops as opposed to shots.

1955 Finals, Fascinating Payette Discovery

Not possible to capture a direct page link. Scroll to page 23 using the following:

https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=Fr8DH2VBP9sC&dat=19550404&printsec=frontpage&hl=fr

At Detroit Game 1 , Canadiens sub goalie listed, No sub goalie listed for Detroit. Game story details extra skater issue.

Game 3 in Montréal. Direct Link provides a fascinating discovery. The Red Wings list a sub goalie - Payette.

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=qYEtAAAAIBAJ&sjid=WZkFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=6981,1381082

This seems to be André Payette the regular goalie for the Valleyfield Braves of the QHL:

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=13097

Quick read of the Valleyfield roster does not point to the team being a Red Wing affiliate. Supported by the fact that the Red Wings had called up Jim Hay from Québec of the QHL during the season and playoffs. Dave Gatherum - a goalie and Al Arbour, known Red Wing farmhands had played for Québec that season.

So there should be a a # for him floating around somewhere.

Edit: Took a random Monday regular season summary for weekend NHL games:

https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=wYItAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Z5kFAAAAIBAJ&hl=fr&pg=6933,1238208

Sub goalies do not seem to be listed.

Fascinating stuff. Especially the Payette find.

But it´s difficult to say if he dressed or was he a standby. Teams had sub goalies during the Playoff times for years.

Here is example clip from 1947 playoffs (Toronto vs. Montreal) which list Bell (most likely Gordon) and Perras (Floyd, just recently discovered that he was with Canadiens) as spare goalies. I´m not sure if there ever have been rule that forbids team to dress two goalies.

Hopefully the link works...

Corrections, errors, and additions (of course) welcome and encouraged.

I´m not sure if Forbes with St. Pats qualify. I would remember that he was suspended for the whole season and wasn´t with the team.

...Both were hopeful that Sawchuk could play Tuesday and Terry insisted that he'd be in the nets. In case a reliefer is needed, Andre Payette will get the assignment. He played the last three seasons with the Valley-field Braves and was picked up as a spare goalie after Valley-field failed to make the Quebec League playoffs. PAYETTE has been working out in the few practices held since the playoffs started and has traveled with the club for both series just in case of an emergency. Neither Glen Hall nor Davey Gatherum, top two pros in the farm chain, are available..

No rule forbidding a team from dressing a second goalie as long as they dressed one fewer skater. The Canadiens did this against Boston and won easily. However both could not wear the #1.

Believe that in the notes for one of the game stories for Game 1 of the SC Finals mention of the benefits of the extra skater were mentioned.

Bell would be Gordon Bell. Floyd Perras was an AHL goalie with Springfield. Roster shows that the team had a handful of recognizable former Canadiens or farmhands. Still Perras was very deep on the depth chart but available for travel and play since his team was eliminated from the playoffs. This seems to be the key point.

As time permits will check a few situations to expand this sub goalie scenario.

One guy who almost made the list is Robbie Irons who backed up Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante on the 68-69 Blues. Neither on of them dressed as a back up all season and Irons only got his 3 minutes of fame when Hall got a game misconduct in New York and Irons faked an injury on the first shot he faced and Plante came from the press box and finished the game.
Tommy Woodcock the Blues trainer was quoted years later saying he attached an ice bag to the toe of Irons skate

No doubt. At that point he wasn´t NHL prospect anymore. But he was with NHL teams many times since 1936.

What kind of surprised me on Perras being Canadien that in 1939 he reportedly refused to sign with Verdun Maple Leafs, because it was French-Canadian team.

right column on this page

And in 1942 Canadiens didn´t like the idea that Perras would have been their spare goalie if something would have happened to their starter. Though it´s kind of understandable because Perras was Detroits property

Montreal Gazette 1942
Legs Fraser will be carried as spare goaler, although the league is providing "insurance netminders" for each series. Floyd Perras, former Cornwall and now Detroit property is the spare custodian for the Red Wing-Canadien series, but the Habitants would prefer to use Fraser if Bibeault gets hurt. In that event, Fraser would be signed to a pro contract.

Montreal Gazette 1942

You raise a number of very interesting points, open a few new paths while pointing to the need for some guidelines and practicalities. Will address some of them here.

1945 agreement between the NHL and the CAHA. Book worthy topic on its own. Changed the developmental model leading to the NHL and the relationship between player on non NHL teams and the rules governing movement of players to the NHL.

The Perras example illustrates that the question of substitute goalies has its roots in training camp. Training camp defined minor league or junior/senior assignments for the season. Making the playoffs at the pre NHL level dictated NHL playoff availability. Example Robert Champoux participating in an NHL Playoff game was not Detroit's second best goalie but the best available goalie. The Perras / Fraser situation seems to hilite a unique WWII situation - availability and the right to travel to the USA. Fraser had a federal job that was part of the war effort. Fraser had participated in training camps with the Canadiens.Roster information from the various NHL training camps could prove to be more revealing than thought.

Availability and use of information. Once Clarence Campbell became NHL president the flow of information from the league increased. Not all teams or newspapers followed suit, so the information available today will reflect this, compounded by the fact that not all newspaper issues are available. Changing at a rapid pace.

Quick point about the André Payette/Perras situations. Key is not finding the name but refining the understanding of circumstances and research methodology.
