I feel like I should give this Dan Sheldon guy a chance, but Dan Russell was flat out unlistenable, if that's a word. If it isn't, it should be and it should have a picture of him next to it in the dictionary. I'm definitely open to it since Blake Price is horrible.
The problem with 1040 is these career broadcaster guys who really have no discernable expertise on the game, but somehow profess to know the situation beyond what any of the listeners can comprehend. I listen to 1040 mostly because they get the top insiders (Ferraro, LeBrun, McGuire, McKenzie, etc.) that do provide insight into the plight of the canucks or issues around the league. The only host I like currently is Sekeres. He's a good journalist and he approaches issues that way. He perceives what he thinks may be an issue and he poses questions to provoke interaction with the listeners and also to get feedback from actual experts. When it comes to things he really does have some knowledge on he offers his own opinions. The other thing is that he clearly goes outside the box to try to make the show more interesting. Things like the sports documentary show, presidents week, the Brian Williams hour, and the fan feedback segments like memo to and tell me im wrong. Like him or not, the guy at least has some originality and intelligence.
Taylor is alright as well. He doesn't pretend to be an expert and he provides some comedy as well. He can be a bit glib from time to time, but lets be honest, there's very little sports discussion that actually goes on in the afternoon and with those two, that's probably for the best. The guys that really irritate me are the following:
Rintoul: Mr. Pedestrian. I'm pretty sure this guy hasn't said anything interesting ever. His need to provide some cute little segue or pun into every commercial break is so frustrating. Seriously, this guy is like 20 years into his career and he still comes off like a 2nd year BCIT radio student. He also has a tendency to come out really aggressively on a take that no one really cares about or has any opposition to and he treats like he's being really controversial.
Price: Nothing that hasn't been said. Rude to callers, really glib and arrogant. Seriously the guy is like a div 5 beer leaguer and criticizes players as though he's been there.
Chapman: He's just so pompous! What has this guy ever done to earn a spot hosting one of these shows? He's boring, has no expertise, and really has no experience broadcasting. Could they find no one qualified to take the 6-8am shift?
B Mac: I actually liked him when he was the clown on the morning show, but since he moved to the afternoon time slot, he's either a 12 year old boy when Taylor's around or a blowhard journalist when he's on his own.
Jeff Paterson: What a jackass
