Not too thrilled with this trade. It's like the opposite of what our trades used to be like. Like another poster here mentioned, feels like we're trending in the opposite direction

the value is fine, but it sucks to lose a bottom six player. you have to imagine colton's camp put out a number that JBB realized was too rich for our blood

Does Jeannot get a leash like Hagel or are we already confirming that he's a bust?

A 37th OA pick for a pending RFA of Coltons caliber is a bad return?
Yeah, considering what other pending rfas if similar or worse caliber recently returned, it was a weak return. Further, from the GM that has spouted nothing but a win now philosophy, losing 2 of your top 7 F with one whole 2nd rd pick in exchange, is an interesting approach(especially after paying 5 picks for Tanner Jeannot....).

this is a bit disingenuous as one was an UFA that is walking. you dont have to like the trade, but the value is fair

Does Jeannot get a chance to prove himself next year like Hagel or is he written off?

Not really, when Newhook just returned a 1st and a 2nd, and Sharangovich+late 3rd just returned a 1st line caliber(or at least very good 2nd line player) in Toffoli. JBB just took a very underwhelming deal which, if Killorn is leaving as is expected, has now made this team considerably weaker.

He gets a chance, but he has imo nothing close to Hagel's upside. For the price paid to acquire him, he will need an amazing season.

It all depends on what Colton and Jeannot get on their deals. The 37th is much higher than our 24 2nd should be, so say it's 60th, it would take a 3rd and probably more to move up to 37. So really all those picks after the 2nd aren't meaningful. We pretty much swapped Colton + 25 1st for Jeannot. So hopefully we can get Jeannot in at a much cheaper price and he gets back to 21/22 form. His style of play will also replace Maroon once he's gone so we don't have to worry about that in a year.

As for the cap we have room to fill out the roster. We aren't gonna bring in any game changes but might be able to find another Perry or two for cheap. The only spot we need to get right is the backup goalie, we need someone to be competent and can actually be relied on to give Vasilevskiy some rest.

newhook is a younger high-draft pick player with potential, and sharangovich is a better player than colton is/will be and younger. again, im not saying you have to agree with the strategy, but it's a fair value trade. im actually stoked we got a low second round pick for colton.

for reference, id rather have kept him too. but we dont know what the negotiation tables revealed about how far apart the two sides were.

You do know that JBB doesn't just make these decisions on his own. He has a team that includes assistant GMs and pro scouts. They've had a pretty good track record so far. It would be odd for them to just completely whiff on Jeannot like a bunch of amateurs.

Hopefully, or, playing devil's advocate, they had tunnel vision on the guy for years and wanted him to the point they overlooked weaknesses. Have to hope that's not the case though.

At least one player that could help now. Any team interested in him should've been a team able to re-sign him, so JBB should have been able to get more. Both Newhook and Sharangovich, players of comparable ability, returned far better than Colton. It was a terrible return.
I'm just impressed that you've gone two pages while ignoring the salary cap exists or even the very fundamental reason why Colton was traded.

Sharangovich twice the player Colton is/will be...stopped there.

I am aware the cap exists, and could care less if you're impressed by anything, thanks!

Especially with someone like Sharangovic getting 3.1M AAV from NJD, You would think Colton wants similar or more.

You're welcome, i've never had someone thank me after making an ass out of themselves.

Nashville had no reason or need to trade Jeannot unless we made it worth their while and we needed to move Colton because we couldn't pay him.
Nashville had like four offers for Jeannot, ours was stupid but was the best.

He's going to have to have a monster year to justify his price tag, and then we certainly wouldn't be able to afford to keep him since we will no longer have his rights. I can certainly end up liking the player but there is no way I can possibly like such a high cost low potential reward trade.

Picks as a concept are overrated. It's who you take with them.

Even historically, pick 37 is only really highlighted by Mats Naslund, Justin Faulk, Boone Jenner, and Don Beaupre. Only 13 players selected there hit 300 NHL games.

Wonder if we will be able to scrounge up enough money to keep Killer.

Obviously gets a chance. Pressure is on him though. We kind of live and die by whether or not he can be an impact player. Paul too, really.

He's trending in the wrong direction 100%.
Maybe he a a jedi trade in the works. We have been rumored for EK for years now. Yeah I know it isn't happening and we don't need him. But if we sign a cheap Vet like OEL and trade for a solid top 6 physicals defenseman with this space we are in good shape to perform with our core.
