I'd rather see him in a top 4 role with somebody on their offside. And since Parayko and Bouw was such a dominant shutdown pairing, I think him and Petro make some sense.

Schwartz -Schenn- Tarasenko
Blais - OReilly Perron
Sanford - Bozak - Thomas
Barbashev - Sundqvist - Steen

Fabbri/MacEachern (Kostin, Kyrou in AHL)

Faulk - Pietrangelo
Bouwmeester - Parayko
Dunn - Bortuzzo

Gunnarson (Mikkola, Borgman in AHL)

Binnington
Allen

(Husso/Fitzpatrick in AHL)

I just worry that Carolina has way too much faith in prospects and young players like Foegele and Necas. If both of them of a low impact season, they are going to struggle to score.

To be fair, Foegele struggled to score last year so not a lot is expected of him offensively. Necas is in a hard battle with Julien Gauthier for the last roster spot. But the real offensive upgrade isn't with either of those guys; it's with the addition of Haula and Dzingel, along with progression from Aho and Svechnikov. If all of that fails to click, then there's not much more the front office could realistically have done (they tried to get Kase and couldn't close it).

I don't agree. We relied upon neither last year and we upgraded from that roster. McLovin had a nice playoff run for sure.

This is overrating Carolina's shooting talent. Brind'Amour had the same PP set-up in the last home preseason game with Aho and Teravainen up high. It's even worse now that there are zero RHS on Unit 1. The Finns have combined for 24 PP goals over the past two seasons. Aho doesn't have much of a one-timer from distance. Teravainen doesn't like to use his. Faulk shot a lot for a reason.

The PP was and I think still will be a collective failure.

Hamilton has no problem ripping it from the point. He can also move around and distribute but he likes to shoot. Gardiner is great at moving the puck. The problem with Faulk is that he's essentially a foozeball player out there you have to tee it up for him and hope he hits the net. Carolina is a very high IQ Hamilton + Gardiner back there will get penalty killers out of position and open up space for the forwards to operate on the half wall or down low or whatever.

Don't forget guys like Dzingel and Haula are very sneaky, quick players with accurate shots so they don't need Aho or TT to be trigger men. Canes now have a nice mix of players who can distribute and shoot hard and accurately. A guy like Nino has a wicked shot. If we can create space for him and open looks he'll be able to snipe from the circle in.

And if worse comes to worse, Dougie launches bombs from the point and nothing changes except the Canes have a more balanced LH-RH situation, got cheaper, and aren't committed to Faulk + CDH contracts while picking up prospects along the way.

It's not like they're penciling Foegele and Necas into the top 6 or something.

But even if they were, you have to get these young players into the lineup sometime. Otherwise you might as well just trade away all your draft picks for "proven vets"

It's a circular argument but one could argue that the lack of a PPQB significantly hurt the PP1's ability to score in the first place.

I see Aho scoring a lot more than the 3 PP goals (out of 30 total) he got last year.
I see Svechnikov scoring more than the 0 PP goals he got last year.
Haula scored 12 PPGs in his last full healthy year
Dzingle adds another high % shooter
Gardiner is the best point puck distributor the Canes have had on the PP since Pitkanen

All reasons I am optimistic. I don't hold the Canes first preseason game against them as it will take time to build chemistry with new personnel, but I actually thought they got some great looks and it appears that Rod agrees based on his most recent interview (https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/article235388632.html)

I'd be optimistic too because of all of that if it weren't for the Finns still playing up high in a diamond formation. I've been complaining about this exact set-up for several years. I think it's a poor mix. Teravainen and Aho have a tendency to play hot potato looking for what becomes a low percentage shot because of the lack of shooting talent up high. I don't mean to make a big deal about a super small sample size, but as soon I saw that again in the preseason game, I became very bearish.

Try Necas at the left half-wall. Try Svechnikov. Try anything different.

I kinda don't like this for either team (especially considering Faulk's new deal)

Question for Blues fans - does Faulk get PP over Pietrangelo and Dunn? Who is likely to be the Dman on the first unit?

How do you figure?

By getting immediately better? Explain yourself

As reality has demonstrated, allocating considerable ice-time and cap space to right-shot PP specialists who need to be sheltered at ES, like, say, Kevin Shattenkirk, is not ideal. In fact, moving on from them and replacing the bulk of their minutes internally with competent ES defenseman immediately leads to never before seen playoff success. Trading a top prospect from your farm system to acquire one when one you already have a rapport with (Shattenkirk) was peddled around for free is particularly baffling.

I like this for both teams as a neutral fan. Carolina didn't need him anymore, and gets a decent guy back on the blue line and a solid prospect. And the way contracts are going that's not bad for the Blues, plus it gives them insurance if Pietrangelo can't be re-signed.

Seems like a good trade. Just because you've never head of Bokk doesn't mean he isn't a good prospect.

People thinking Bokk is a great piece haven't been paying attention in the past year. He's struggled mightily for half the SHL season. He looked like he was passed by multiple players at the prospects game after the draft, and he was terrible in Traverse City and in camp. Carolina will regret taking him as one of the main returns.

He attended neither of those things....

"the past year" I should have added or so.

He played in the 2018 tournament, and he also attended prospect camp. So yes, he attended both things. If you notice my post history I spoke on the Blues prospect camps and Traverse City in regards to Kostin a few times.

edit: Just to prove I'm not just talking out of my butt.

2019 Traverse City Prospect Tournament (Sept. 6-10)

"Not even a fan of the team, but I think that Klim's going to have a big tournament and hopefully a big year. I saw him and he's looking HUGE. He looked decent at the prospect camp"

Who has the best prospects in the league?

And here's me saying Kostin's better than Bokk. From my viewings Bokk is not a good piece.

Nailed it.

Love Petro, but if he asks for the kingdom, he's not getting it. The Blues don't shell out mega contracts like Toronto.

I think one of Schenn or Petro is gone next year.
