Hello Darkness My Old Freind
Vlasic was named 1st star.
Vlasic was named 1st star.
They both average significantly less time in the situation and it's not just time overall that matters here. It's level of competition. Dillon and Simek do not see top PP's far more often than not. They would be vastly out of their element putting one of them out there with Vlasic on their off-side. I do not value Vlasic's 'comfort' with Heed nor Karlsson's with Dillon because I don't believe that it is somehow not transferable to other partners. Vlasic-Karlsson doesn't need testing again. It's a damn good pairing that people here still won't let go the early hiccups. The most effective d-pairing deployments has been Vlasic-Karlsson and Dillon-Braun. Heed hasn't done enough to warrant a spot in the lineup over Braun at this point. He's been hot the past couple weeks but that's not good enough and we know the points streak isn't mostly to do with Heed's abilities. Most of his points are just lucky points like Vlasic got in his career year.
Roll with:
Vlasic-Braun as the shutdown pair
Dillon-Karlsson
Simek-Heed
Burns on the wing
That would be incredibly fun to watchOkay but hold on a second...Meier-Hertl-Burns in front of Dillon-Karlsson doesn’t sound that bad...

Lucky points? Alright, I’m done lol. You’ll die on your hill and I’ll do the same
It's not about dying on a hill. It's merely conveying what I see. Are you seriously going to credit Heed for a basic d-to-d pass for an assist? Or the assist against the Blues that he got for shooting the puck and it ricocheting right to Thornton to set up Meier? The two assists against Chicago? A basic pass to Hertl who makes the play. The second assist was definitely a skill play on Heed's part. That was a good shot shooting for Meier's stick. His goal against Detroit was a lucky deflection in front on an otherwise weak pass attempt. Heed's assist against Washington was a pretty routine pass through the neutral zone. The one in Vancouver was another basic d-to-d pass for a shot deflected by Pavs. That's his seven points in eight games right there while averaging about 15 minutes per game. They're going to need more out of that spot in the lineup if they expect to maintain their other players without gassing them or putting them at higher injury risk.
Yes it is, because you and I are not seeing it the same way which is fine. That “basic pass”to Hertl was a pretty damn good heads up play while Chicago was on a change. Those shots going in mean he’s getting pucks through.. it may not be sustainable but he’s doing significantly more than Vlasic and Braun offensively. Watching Braun, he looks like he’s skating with a grand piano on his back, he’s not strong on the puck, he cant make an outlet pass, and he’s turning it over in the Dzone on a regular basis. If he was J. Ryan playing like this he’d be benched. Hell, the reason he’s good on the PK is because he still has good positioning and he can rip it down the ice without consequence. With Braun scratched, every pairing has a quality PMD which I value more than you. Nothing more to argue.
But it's a play that everyone in the NHL in that spot is going to make. I'm not worried about Vlasic and Braun's offense. I'm worried about the team's defense that if you take Braun out for Heed, you're leaving a massive hole in the PK that cannot be filled by anyone other than Burns and Karlsson and also in defensive situations late in games. It's also going to hurt in general just in how DeBoer uses Heed. In order to maximize what you're going to get out of Burns and Karlsson, especially now that Karlsson has a tender groin, is to be able to count on someone to step in for 20 minutes and take the defensive pressure off of them so they can do their thing offensively.
And no, if Braun was Ryan he wouldn't be benched because while he has his problems with the puck, it is exaggerated on these boards and not nearly enough to override the fact that he's playing very well defensively. You are completely dismissing how good Braun is defensively because the negatives about him standout in your head.
And you can bet your bottom dollar that if Heed is in the lineup for the playoffs, that 15 minutes a game he's getting now is going to be cut to 10 or 12 and that's going to have lasting impact on the top guys and wear them out.
I don't care so much about the backup goalie not starting for 2 months, as much as there's no need to play Jones so many games. Let Dell play in the back to back.Dell has to play tomorrow. We can't go into the playoffs with our backup goalie who hasn't started for 2 months.
No I just disagree that he’s playing well defensively as do others on the board. I have no bias against Braun. I just know those defensive zone turnovers can determine a playoff series and I value Heed’s ability to get the puck out of the zone effectively more than Braun on the PK. I also don’t see any limitations in Heed’s defensive game. I think you’re just manufacturing the image of him being purely an offensive specialist to further your argument for Braun. Vlasic and Braun have clearly lost a step or two and it shows. Also, if he did go from 15 to 12 minutes which you’re assuming being that Deboer hasn’t shortened the bench with his d pairings at all with Heed, that’s only about an extra shift each for the other 5 dmen. Not a huge deal except for maybe EK65.
Does not get much use these days. It’s been ages since I’ve seeb this image
I think most here conflate his puck play with his defensive play because his defensive play is more than fine. Heed has that ability against sheltered competition. Braun is seeing tougher competition regularly especially when he's in there specifically in defensive situations. I see no evidence to support that his defensive play outside of the puck play is bad. As for Heed, there is plenty of limitations to his defensive game. The idea that he's anything but an offensive specialist is not born out by anything he's shown on the ice. He gets beat to a lot of 50-50 pucks that Braun tends to win because Heed is slower. He gets outmuscled regularly because he's smaller. Braun's board play is significantly better and he's better at boxing out. Heed is less than nothing special defensively right now.
As for the idea that it's not a big deal, you're wrong because that's not how that gets spread out. If Heed is in the lineup, his shifts when he gets benched are taken by Burns and Karlsson...not all the other five d-men.
Braun faster than Heed? Seriously? Lmao, this could go all night and it wouldn’t move the needle on either side. Goodnight
