Fun fact.
Most goalies don't like signing for teams that will make them look bad. Edmonton and Detroit are both teams that make goalies look really bad at this time.

Without Klefbom that defense is going to be a special kind of brutal this year. He was their only top pairing guy.

Except the best player in the world, who signed as soon as he was able to to stay in Edmonton!!! Oh yeah and the Draisatl guy as well, max term contract. Do Toronto get same criticism when its star player signs a 5 yr deal?
Takes the right player to come to any Canadian market. If you want anonymity it's not the place to come. The NHL needs to fix the cap situation for the no state tax teams. It's such a huge advantage for Florida, Texas and Nevada based teams. If I was a player and could make 20% more real dollars in one of those states vs. Montreal it's a no brainer.

EDIT: Also Mackinnon plays in Colorado not Edmonton.

Can you show us Where Montreal was offering more? Or are you just pulling baseless statements out of your ass again?

Also you do know that "How to move to Canada" is one of the most googled sentences in all pf America right now, correct?

Once again, some of you keep referring to ordinary people with your second point. Average Americans don’t have the luxuries of multimillionaires. Average people have better lives in Canada than America, yeah. But that doesn’t apply to athletes and celebrities.

Also, Bob Gainey offered Briere six years for 42 Million (7M AAV). Holmgren offered him 8 years for 52 million (6.5M AAV). The Montreal contract was also said to be front-loaded.

He still turned down Montreal for Philly that summer, despite Montreal being closer to competing.

Yeah the NHL also has to do something similar to the NBA with bird rights and give teams the flexibility to go over the cap to resign their drafted talent.

It’s not just the Canadian teams who suffer. Even my Penguins have only been relevant because of a 1st and 2nd overall pick in the mid-2000s which granted us two generational talents.

Pittsburgh isn’t Miami or LA or NYC either. We’re not getting players on discount contracts. So the least that the league can do is allow for teams who tank to be able to afford all of the stars they’ve drafted without being hurt by the cap.

Guess you were there for one of the few games he didn't...hence why I said almost every. Here are some fun ones

I love how in 2020 we have the internet to quickly destroy arguments like this.

Back in the 90's that guy could just keep saying "nuh-uhh. Didn't happen. nope nope nope. nope".

Also love how he just ejected himself out of the conversation after this post.

McDavid could've gotten more as a UFA let's be real. Draisaitl was a 1.5 million dollar over-payment at the time but is a 1.5 million dollar discount now.
McDavid wasn't UFA, and exactly, Drai was an overpayment at the time.

Who cares if he won't sign in Edmonton? He had a 2.75GAA and a .918SV% in 43 games and is probably looking for 6m+
Koskinen had a 2.75GAA and a .917SV% in 38 games

Kefbom was a D worst -17 and was 3rd on the team in 5 on 5 minutes. He's not the same player he was 3 years ago.

He mainly gets points these days from gravy assists to McDavid and Draisaitl on the PP and many of his minutes come from the PP.

The Oilers will have to sign a top 4 guy but Klefbom is not some star defenceman, hasn't been since surgery in 2017.

Ok, you're right then. He took a discount because he loves Edmonton so much. Lol

What are you even arguing?

He took a discount because he thought the team was trending upward after advancing to game 7 of the 2nd round of the playoffs.

His mistake was not sticking it out for another year. He likely doesn’t do that after 2017-18.

My argument is that Canadian markets have to be more competitive on-ice than other places in order to level the playing field. This especially applies to UFAs and players with NTCs, but even to an extent with RFAs.

I would even hesitate to call Klef a top pairing guy. In reality we had 3 3/4's, and 3 5/6's on the backend last year
