POHO would be above GM.

It's quite obvious nobody wants to work for Melnyk.

Dorion is a well respected GM.
The position was described as someone to lend Dorion a hand. It was POHO in name only, hence nobody even accepting an interview. Dorion having full autonomy in picking a coach shows this.

Not going to bother with the Dorion bit, that's just a merry go round

This whole rebuild as a fn joke.. starting with peanuts for Hoffman to appease Karlsson, then Karlsson, Stone, Duchene, Dzingel... now Melnyk wants to hire someone to help guide the rebuild ... Hockey people with any spine and integrity are going to look at that and shake their head. Gut the stars in their prime and start over with less than an expansion team. It would just make no sense and the only apparent reason beyond incredible stupidity is money.

Got a laugh from the Friedman bit stating Gene was feeling humbled after several potential candidates wouldn't even take a meeting or a call, A) it's funny that it happened and B) the fact it was surprising to him!

It's an AGM job disguised as a POHO/Senior consultant role, there's no sugarcoating that at this point.

The sad part is, if the team never went public with their POHO search and instead hired another (hockey ops) AGM out of the blue the fan base might actually be happy (or realistically, less mad). But now it looks like another failed endeavor by EM.

What's the old saying again? Over promise, under deliver? Maybe that's our team identity, might have to cross post this...

Money is the root of all evil or the lack of it, kind of apropos in this case.

But now it looks like another failed endeavor by EM.

You know, if the team had just flat out said "we're looking for a couple of senior advisors to help Pierre out at the GM level", the fanbase would have probably seen it as a positive move. Hell, I've been saying Dorion needs experienced support in an advisory role for literally years.

But no. Like usual, they have to spin it into this massive PRESIDENT OF HOCKEY OPS! EVERYTHING IS GREAT! message, which of course blows up in their faces.

Typical of this regime. Why take what could have been a small win and make it into a huge embarrassment?

A truly remarkable ability to shoot themselves in the foot.

Five years of unparalleled incompetence.

Exactly.

Lou Lamorello and Steve Yzerman wuold struggle being GM here. Obviously a green GM like Dorion, who excels at his actual scouting duties but is not qualified in the slightest to be a GM, is going to struggle. That's WITH a stable group helping him. He's been dropped off in Saigon without a parachute and a walkie-talkie with a 2 meter range

I mean it's not even "possibilities or maybes", we have a 3 year sample size to evaluate, and it's not pretty even including a Cinderella ECF run.

I'm actually impressed by this team's ability to snatch negative headlines out of decisions that any half-competent FO would have been able to spin as positive news.

The thing is, and I've used this comparison for the past few years, the things this management decide on doing (interviews/promotional videos/marketing/customer support) wouldn't get through the first sitting of a Business 1000 group project.

"Ahhh, you mean you want to put out the promotional video we shot a month ago saying we are doing better than pundits predicted right now? You realise we are last in the class atm correct? That doesn't make us look very sane. Yeah, scrap that the prof will roast us."

"You want to drop rubber exercise balls on the audience from the ceiling of the building? That doesn't seem like a smart idea, scrap that"

Everyone has stupid ideas. Heck, I've had some DOOZIES myself.

The problem, like you are suggesting, is that most organizations have enough people involved in major decisions that there's at least one person on hand to speak up and say "that's stupid, let's not do that".

On a bare-bones hockey ops staff, we don't have anyone to be that voice of reason. And when we do, there's a realistic chance that we've simply put another yes-man in that role who doesn't challenge the status quo out of a fear of losing their job.
