Russia now ready to discuss prisoner swap
Hasn’t this girl been going to play basketball in the women’s league in Russia for a few years? I think this whole scenario of her arrest, detention, trial, and now jail sentence is because of the current war and political tensions.

Nah, the media is blowing it out of proportion because of her fame and the current political situation.

From all indications she's guilty. And her sentence isn't out of the ordinary whatsoever.
Brittney Griner's sentence is in line with Russia's strict drug penalties – but how long she serves will be decided outside the courtroom

Her notoriety is what will politically force Biden into a prisoner swap.
Sadly, her stupidity will likely result in some shady Russian characters being let out of our prisons.

Yea, its pretty stupid to transport any kind of drug when you are in a foreign country. Especially a not-so-friendly one like Russia.

If this happened to a regular person, a prisoner swap would be fairly unlikely IMO.

Russia getting exactly what they wanted from the situation honestly. That is, citizens of the US blaming their government for “not working hard enough” to get her home, while Russia holds the cards in getting their actual criminals released for this ultimately normal citizen. They hold her, Americans stay angry at their own government. They agree to release her, they get their criminals out of jail and back into the organized crime ring that is the Russian government.

It’s a sad situation without a doubt. And by all standards in this part of the world, a case of punishment grossly over weighing the crime. But there is not here. And, as much as there is backlash for saying it, this could have been avoided without such a stupid move by the person jailed. I wouldn’t even take weed through the TSA domestically (where they just seize it) nevermind in a faraway, foreign country. It’s an inexcusably foolish thing for an adult to do.

and the problem is who they are offering to swap .

Regardless of how badly they want Brittney back; Bout should NEVER EVER be released. This is a horrible idea

She wasn’t a tourist or traveller either. She played professionally in Russia so she should be held to a higher standard of knowing the laws given the amount of time she spent there, coming and going in and. Out of Russia.

If they are stupid enough to go to Russia or any other dictatorship they deserve what they get.
Can’t be applying your countries laws onto another. What is legal in the USA or certain states in the USA may not be legal in another country. So if you are talking weapons or drugs you better be certain and do your homework. The consequences of another country may be infinitely more severe than in your home country.

Where would the anger land if this prisoner that Russia wants released ends up killing people in future years if the swap goes the way Russia wants? Who’s going to own that?

More US citizens paying for their country's foreign policy adventures.
It should be common sense by now - no sane person should be traveling to Russia now for any reason whatsoever. All they're doing is trying to build up a group of hostages to be used in trades for their gangster buddies. They're like the old Aztecs who would fight wars just to gather up prisoners to be sacrificed in some later public ritual.

It's just another reminder how the average person is looked at as cattle in this world.

I immediately rembered another situation where the USA pressured the Canadians to detain the huaweii executive while she was in Canada.

Canada makes the arrest, and then China retaliate by arresting Canadian citizen in China, and kept them detained until certain demands were fulfilled.

It's depressing to think about, really. All governmental bodies, no matter how they gain office throughout the world, seem like they have virtually no regard for human life.

Crap on other countries all you want, but we (the US) have the highest incarceration rate in the world. Our foreign prisoner population, by %, is higher than Russia's too.

If ever a "don't be stupid while in that country" existed, it's us. lol

IOW, don't hold your breath

Saw this coming. Nobody with a platform in Russia is crying about how Bout is in jail across the pond and he should be free. Putin does not have any public pressure. Vs Biden whos being pushed and called out by many to bring her home.

Come on now. How many of those that are incarcerated in the U.S. fit the same profile as Griner? Whether it was arrogance or ignorance she made a poor decision that has led to her being a political pawn. Russia would have milked this for all it was worth regardless of the current geopolitical situation. They wouldn't be alone either. The U.S. and any number of countries would have done the same.
