There are two more retention slots that we are allowed to use in trades. If the only reasonable trades available beyond Pettersson are for depth guys, I wonder if they plan to use them to get a couple more penny stocks in this upcoming draft. It may be deeply unsexy, but you just never know with the lower rounds. Usually you come up with nothing, but sometimes you get something very interesting.

Deeply unsexy is certainly a phrase you could use to describe the Canes at times, but just like a super reliable car, it gets the job done.

I don’t think there’s such thing as a draft that didn’t have some late round gems. Doesn’t matter how bad the draft is.

Still….needle in a pile of needles at the sixth round.
A 6th round pick isn't worth a lot.

It's also worth more than $687K in cap space after the trade deadline.

And if Carolina is in a position where that $687K is important, they can either send a roster player back or work a retention of their own to make things work. But with $5.87M in projected deadline cap space they should be fine if a major move materializes.

Well I think it signals that we won’t need that much cap space with our moves, for better or worse. If we were worried about figuring it out we wouldn’t be doing this obviously.

Though until EP signs there’s still a chance that deal is on the table.

I’m expecting a bigger deadline than last year but less than the big one with Tro and Skjei. Shading closer to last year.

If they are acquiring a $6M or more player, chances are they are sending at least one roster player back. They may need to send back a roster player in any deal because of the 23 man roster limit.

I think this is if there's a bigger deal, they will figure it out. $687K isn't going to scuttle a deal.

Jack Drury likely has to be traded if the player is high-profile enough. As for Necas, being available for Pettersson is not the same as being available. I think even with the potential leak, I'm sure that everyone, at least at a baseline level, understands that fact.

If I was Waddell I’m taking a similar offer they made for EP and calling St Louis and offering something for Robert Thomas. I highly doubt the blues would move him but man he would be a perfect 2c behind aho and a right shot.

Zero chance STL moves Thomas.

If there's a distressed asset STL fans seem to be considering moving, it's Kyrou. And if they are concerned about uncertainty around Necas's contract, dealing for Kyrou's known contract might make more sense.

Someone mentioned Pacioretty at some point. Wonder what the chances they take another swing at him? Doesn't really scream carolina but he's been healthy so far this season.

Buch's value is 2 1sts right now.

I'd offer 1st, Blake, and Heimo. STL will ask for Morrow instead but Im not sure we offer up Morrow in a short term Buch deal.

Does that work? probably not unless STL really likes Blake.

Rather just got for Vatrano who won’t cost two firsts

understandable.

Vatrano is due some regression because he is shooting above expected in 5v5 and well above expected on the PP. Buch is about where Buch has been for a while shooting slightly below expected. Buch does have a stronger 2 way game

Shooting wise, Vatrano is an decently even mix of below the dots and above. Buch is a majority below the dots guy. We need more of that.

Don’t get me wrong I’d pay a lot for Buch. Wouldn’t be afraid to toss this years first in seeing we have 2 seconds. First, second Drury and another prospect id consider

This is a perfect description for what the 5+ rounds of the NHL draft are like. I am not at all convinced that there’s even one team in the league which has a material advantage in scouting beyond the 100th pick. It’s just guesswork and hoping that someone hits a development spurt.

The Canes drafted something like 13 times back in 2021. Did most of them bust? Of course... but... they still got Morrow, Koivunen, and Blake as very interesting prospects and Heimosalmi + Nystrom as longer shots. Draft with enough frequency and you get enough potential darts to have a legitimate farm system even while drafting late.
