No to rentals.
Yes to paying a price for a permanent player that fits in moving forward.

Agreed. As we've seen the last two years, 4th line Cs at the deadline cost a 2nd rounder. We only really have one need, which is a legit #2-3 RHD, and none of those will be available as rentals anyway. No point in adding a bottom pairing guy, because that doesn't actually upgrade our D at all.

I keep reading about McQuaid and Petrovic and slowly die inside. Petrovic is so bad...

Gards is odds on to be another "self rental" type player so I'm not sure what Dubas has in mind this year.

Still got a decently stacked cupboard of prospects and picks right now but it might be better not to raid it quite yet.

2 years from now, this team will be sitting pretty in terms of cap, our core locked up and entering prime years and probably room to make major moves then.

It's not just going to be win now, it's going to be won now for years with this core. Gotta draft and develop well to maintain that though.

I for one hope we do not trade for rentals.

We wasted picks the last 2 years for Boyle and Plekanec. This year thank god we have a liable 4th line center in Lindholm, and some depth if for what ever reason he needs to move up in the lineup with Gauthier. They both have faired well this season in the minutes given.

I agree, if we are going to make trades at deadline we should target players that fit the core moving forward. We will have players like Gardiner and Hainsey possibly leaving at end of season. If we can add a player that is sign beyond this season at a low cap hit that can replace one of these two but also help this playoffs that should be the way Dubas goes. Secondly, if there is a way to sign Rick Nash for the playoff push I would do so. Same type of contract as Fisher with Nashville last season. That would give us some size on wing for playoff push, and all it costs is money which we have since we can afford up to 2 5 million dollar players come the deadline.

Kind of random, but Eric Stall.
Last year of contract, 3.5m

Playing well, great shot, playoff performer.
If Minesota misses (7th in west right now) he could give us cheap but insane depth.

Kappanen Matthew's Nylander
Hyman Tavares Marer
Marleau Kadri Stall (3 centers, all 2 way guys, Stall adds a "sniper" to the kind and a ton of size/ grit)
Brown Lindholm Johnsson
Ennis

This is type of guy they need. That third line would likely win playoff games

Mcquaid is a great target... along with alex petrovic. He would bring some grit to the back end.

We dont need to shake up the core, just some better depth than hainsey zaitsev and oz
We are weak at RD on the top four. We are strong in bottom pairing options. Neither of those guys should touch the top four.

You need to have a pipeline of quality players (Kadri/Gardiner types) filtering in to support your core like the Blackhawks had. And you need to be careful you don’t start sacrificing it all before you’ve had any success. A core needs good support and Gauthier/Ennis level of support isn’t good enough. 1 or 2 buried in the lineup as depth is fine.
But not top level support.

I liked the though of adding Pesce, good fit IMO, I just don’t see what we have to offer though if Carolina wants top 6 forward help.

Gotta look at the current trend. Last year mcdonagh was available because New York decided to rebuild. No one saw that coming at the beginning of the year. This years it's kings and blues who might finally start to sell off some d. Pietro is the equivalent of mcdonagh imo. 1 more year after this season , #1 rhd, and same with Tampa, we could extend him if we choose.

Would be expensive, like kapanen, lilegren and a 1st. But it could put us over the top

They could have waived Marincin or Holl to make room for Nylander, and didn't.
Doubt they will for Nash. Defensive depth is crucial in the playoffs.

It was more for Leivo’s beneficial than anything else. He would have to split games with Ennis and we promised Leivo that if he were to miss significant amount of games we would find him a new home. Nash is good but we are pretty much stuck salary wise unless he takes (1 yr opportunity) 1 mil deal.

Would we still want pietro at this point? He apparently might need surgery on his hand and will be out a while.

For the right price and the fact he’s not a rental and will be here moving forward, yes. We can wait.

Hainsey is fine as a bottom pair D alongside Dermott. Playing him as a top pair as well as top PK unit left him running on fumes by the playoffs last year & it doesn’t look like he recovered over the summer either.

Not really a “rental” since he has one more year left after this one but Gudas is a perfect fit to put with Rielly IMO. Only 3.35 cap hit and the Flyers should be sellers by deadline time. Let Oz & Hainsey duke it out for 6D spot.

A Simmons/Gudas + some salary retention package for Brown and picks/prospects would be a good deadline move for us I think.

Get a power forward type as a rental and a hard nosed 3rd pairing D for this year and next...a younger and better Polak.

How did acquiring Nash work out for Boston last season?

Yeah, it didn't, so, NO THANK YOU.
The point is we don't have to acquire him. He is a FREE agent. You sign him, see if he is clicking and go from there. There is zero at stake. Boston gave up a 1st, 7th, Lindgren, Spooner and Belesky (cap dump) to get him. Rick Nash if played on the 3rd or 4th line would be an asset to us.
