The biggest problem I have with this is, if they don’t actually use the cap space now, guess what they’ll be shopping for at the deadline!?!

A right handed depth dman. That can play in his own end. Maybe kill penalties. Cheap cap hit.

Sorta like a McQuaid.

Garbage deal by Sweeney unless he's bringing someone else in and needed the money.
As it stands McQuaid was sitting in the pressbox when we were all healthy.

I think the deal was McQuaid for a 4th... not awesome, but have to think he'd been shopped around. That might be the best deal going currently. Kampfer likely a contract limit part of the deal. Also someone we can send down to Providence with 0 cap hit.

My guess... coaching/management might think one of the prospects is ready/pushing for a roster spot.

Please keep track of anyone who previously told me a 3rd was no big deal for Rinaldo because it's such a crapshoot at that point in the draft but who now tells me how valuable a 4th is.
Especially if the Rags end up trading Quaider to saaaaay Pittsburgh at the TD. That would make Sweeney look BAAAAD!

There was a log jam at D (still is), this saves cap room and gives the Bruins more assets to work with. I am merely guessing, but my thinking is that DS would like to be in the position to spend X dollars at a specific time, rather than hoping to sell off just to make things work. He's an intelligent guy with a smart group around him, I bet they have eyes on a few things and this is a move that needed to happen if they want to achieve those things down the road.

Sucks for us not knowing what all the moving parts are in the scenario, but that's business. Going to miss Quaider.

I get the argument that $2.75M/yr for depth and rainy days is a poor allocation of cap space. I really do. I’ve made that case myself. Especially considering the holes the Bruins have up front.

But if you’re not going to use that flexibility to fill those roster ???s, then what the hell good does opening that space do you?

And let’s not pretend that McQuaid wasn’t in the exact same position last season and wasn’t a contributor. He played nearly half the year and every single playoff contest. His value to the team has been stated plenty and requires no echo from me.

Sure hope Sweeney proves me wrong and has something in place that wisely uses the newly acquired cap space. If he does, I’ll take it all back. But I’ve heard this song before and I’m not holding my breath.

I'll always love McQuaid, but I'm not really upset. It was obvious his time here was coming to a close and I think moving on from him was the right call.

But I still don't think this makes any sense unless it's part one of a larger roster move. I'd rather just have him for this last year and then let him walk.

like when that $5 mill in Boychuk savings ended up being nothing more than Brett freaking Connolly?

this is 100% a deal that can just as easily be made in February as now. There is zero reason to make this move and you have made the team and locker room weaker for the sake of a buck.

As it stands now, they haven’t even started preseason. Lots of things (and injuries) can happen

Zero urgency to do this deal now unless there is more coming.

McQuaid and Boychuck are two different players, but wondering if the similarities of trading two well liked and respected players at season start will have the same negative effect on team chemistry.

Boychuk was a loss because he was playing top pairing minutes. Yes, he was well-liked and a good teammate, but losing a top 2 guy is why the Bruins struggled.

If the only thing keeping together this current roster from falling apart is Adam McQuaid's presence, then they're seriously flawed and the front office should begin the rebuild immediately.

Like everyone else, loved McQuaid's old school approach to the game, his toughness will be missed. From a practical point of sense this trade makes a lot of sense, McQuaid as our #8 was being paid $2.75 mil/year, that as it stood, is a bad contract for this team, furthermore it now gives Zboril and others a real chance to play if the injury bug hits us. I do not want to see Kampfer, never liked his game, hopefully he stays the year in Providence.

Well, you have me shrugging too. I'm just trying to make sense of it in some sort of logical sense (whether people agree with the logic or not).

The two best and realistic theories I've read here so far, and perhaps it's a mix of both things, or something else completely.
1. McQuaid saw himself being in the pressbox, and asked to be moved to a team where he would be a regular (when healthy).
2. Bruins really high on some of the defensive prospects, and think they will make a push.

Not arguing for or against the move, just trying to make sense of it.

Here is my theory.

Rangers wanted this deal done sooner rather than later and the Bruins didn't want to make him go all the way to China just to get traded.

Or was McQuaid one of the guys who wasn't gonna go? Can't remember.

So I hate this trade a lot. Value wise, it's actually there. A 4th for McQuaid seems like a pretty standard return. MAYBE you get something a little better at the TDL. I just hate dealing McQuaid at this point. Bruins have stressed depth on defense for the past 2 seasons and just dealt it away after strengthening it with the Moore signing. However, if this deal was made to free up cap space to bring in another player, then I understand it more. Also, @BruinDust brought up a great point, and one we may never find out, but if McQuaid requested a trade because he wants to play, I understand it as well.

On the return, the 4th and conditional 7th seem standard, as I said above. Kampfer is nothing more than an AHL player when he's on a good team, so I expect him in Providence. He doesn't help much on the backend. He's small (5'11'') and not good defensively. He can move the puck, but we have enough of that already.

Bruins have been playing Zboril on the right side more. So maybe this trade opens up more of a chance for him to get looks this season?

Love McQuaid, but the trade had to be made
  • A 4th round pick is good return especially in the deep, deep, 2019 draft. May be the equivalent of a 3rd round, value wise,
  • in other drafts
  • Need to start making room for the young guys. We got to know what we have before Chara is out the door
  • McQuaid wasn't playing and was redundant when he was.
  • The league is changing and we need to continue to focus on mobility from the D.

They tried Zboril at RD against the Sabres, maybe they think he’s closer to the NHL then some thought when Sweeney signed Moore. They probably think one of the defenseman in Providence will be ready to play some games if injuries happen.
