Wonder if DW has kicked the tires on Jarry at all. I know they have a lot of goalies in their system but none really NHL ready if Jones is a tire fire.

Doubt it. Dell is probably going to get a shot early on in the season and the management will go from there if he stinks up the joint as well.

Pretty funny he was pulled in a preseason game...can't wait for the measured and well thought out Jones takes that are coming this year

Cat Silverman calls Martin Jones "the most dramatic case of technical bafflement the league has seen in ages."

"he just cannot stop a puck moving from a passer on his glove side to a shooter by his blocker."

Reminds me of Jim Carrey... Didn't he win the Vezina and then immediately get run out of the league?

Carey always had fundamental problems. As he got exposed everything fell to pieces. That wasn't the case with Jones. He's developed flaws in his game.

BB's pregame interview this morning was very interesting. They've been working on Jones' conditioning, squaring up more on lateral moves, and pushing harder on those moves.
As mentioned earlier in the thread, Jones has had significant issues moving to his blocker side from his glove side.

I'm really rooting for Jones to get back to form and go on a run. He was fantastic in the 2016 playoffs.

Lost in the SW!
Jones did not look improved tonight after 2 periods. Gave up first goal five hole as he left it
open and they put it in. Two other goals where he's still not battling to track pucks and gets
beat. On the 4th goal/break away he looks like he was protecting himself / giving the goal scorer a facial instead of trying to stop a puck.

He's like 1-7-1 before todays game.

He does not appear to be an NHL goalie at this time. Time to make a change somehow and get Dell some back up help. He's what i would do. Start Dell. Any back to backs coming up give who ever in the AHL is playing well a start as they can't do any worse. Repeat till season is over. Have Jones
work on his game, put him on IR to save some cap space while doing so (i'm sure BB can find
some physical problem so as to do so - lack of passion/game emotion). When we are
eliminated from the playoffs let Jones start and show off his improved game. See how he does.

Stated another way if i'm BB i really don't wanna play Jones as he's just not good enough or playing with enough confidence. I don't think his teammates are playing well for him either, they are
playing down to his level.

If this truly is just an off year then we need a new starting goalie moving forward because Dell isn’t going to cut it. Best on the market is Georgiev but what’s it gonna cost for solid goaltending, and what the f*** do we do with Jones?

Maybe we can trade him for a cap dump with more aav but with less term? I just dont see a good way out of this. It cost the leafs s first round pick to trade 1 year of patty's contract and at the very least he is still playing at an nhl level. I cant even imagine what it would cost is to get rid of jones.

Waive him, what's the worst that could happen?

Waiving him is pointless. Nobody will claim him. He won't somehow get better in the AHL. They save no money after replacing him with an equally mediocre goalie. Pay a team on his list to take him or eat the 8 year buyout.

The buyout is not that bad with a rising cap. Addition by subtraction, too. Please, DW, never sign a goalie to this sort of contract again.

I think the buyout is going to be an option they could explore but it would be largely dictated by the state of the team. I do think they try to move him in the coming off-season but if not, I would not be too shocked to see Jones be on our roster for the 2020-21 season. I played around with capfriendly just a little bit to see what a roster without any big re-signing could look like next season. Obviously, that does mean we are just 'refreshing'.

Thornton, Marleau retire or walk. As much as I like them, I am not sure bringing them back does us much good. Even at league minimum.
Dillon and Melker get traded at the TDL (or walk after this season)
We move Sorensen. The theoretical trade I did was to Detroit was for their 7th rounder in 2021.
Re-sign Simek for 1.75M. Kellman and Suomela for 1M each. Noesen for 1.1M. All 1 year (or 2 at most)
Sign Yannick Weber for 1M (D-depth veteran). Could potentially bring back Prout for 800K or so.
Carrick, Middleton will be our callups with Merkley as a wildcard for us.
Let Dell walk and bring up Korenar (or Bibeau or Sawchenko). Alternatively could sign a G at UFA too.

I do not have Labanc on our roster because I am hoping we move him. If we cannot, I would think he signs a short term deal for 4M AAV which I am not sure he is worth.

But basically, with this roster we have 12.5M available in cap space. There is little to no need to buy out Jones. Especially if we are tanking/refreshing/rebuilding.

I also looked at some forwards hitting UFA next season, in case DW decides to be a buyer to fill in our top-9 wingers.
RW: Toffoli, Dadanov, Fast and Grimaldi. Hoffman does too but I don't see him on the Sharks.
LW: Kreider, Hall, Galchenyuk, Maroon, Soderberg, Haula, Granlund, Ennis

With 12.5M in cap space, we should be able to grab 2 guys above. Hall and Kreider are unlikely but other than that, it should be fair game. If he does decided to buyout Jones, he gets another 2.875M in cap for this year which really should be plenty to either bring back Jones or go for the likes of Lehner, Greiss, Halak, etc.

In the end it really comes down to where DW thinks he is with this team. Our biggest holes are lack of top-9 RW's (assuming no Labanc on roster) and a starting goalie. With 12.5M in cap space, DW could potentially fill 2-3 of the 4 issues. Maybe 1 more if he does buyout Jones.

I have no idea though where DW thinks this team is at .. :D
