I guarantee Kobasew will not be the top line RW in the playoffs.

No kidding but the point is Megna could be in the top 9 come playoff time while we know Kobasew shouldn't be. Megna should be getting the ice time to see if he can stick. After all, if he proves to be a valuable 3rd liner, then we don't need to spend assets on another one at the deadline. Unless Megna is still hurt, there isn't any reason to have Kobasew in the lineup or in a higher spot than him.

Let us not forget how Pyatt (who was not deemed good enough for the NYR) is securing a spot here on this (supposedly) much better team.

Sadly, not only is Pyatt actually better than a few players already on this roster, we probably won't ever waive him.

FN benching Megna is indefensible (if he's healthy).

5v5 pts/60min (This standardizes every player regardless of how many games they've played or how many minutes they get/game)

Crosby 3.07
Malkin 3.06
Neal 2.77
Gibbons 2.75
Kunitz 2.39
Megna 2.03
Dupuis 2.00
Jokinen 1.95

Vitale 1.57
Glass 1.47
Bennett 1.34
Sutter 1.09
Adams 0.69
Kobasew 0.49
Pyatt 0.39
Sill 0.0000000

I've bolded the 2 guys who have really stood out to me this year. It is a no brainer that those 2 guys should ALWAYS be in the lineup if healthy. I realize they haven't played a ton of games, but WHAT would indicate that they aren't up to it so far?

That argument doesn't make sense to me. Some guys play better with a change of scenery and a guy like Pyatt who wins board battles is actually of value here and I have been enjoying his play.

Is Zatkoff getting the start?

#1 MAF has not been good at all in Jan
#2 MAF has traditionally sucked against MTL
#3 Zatkoff hasn't played since EDM

This is a lot of mumbling about nothing with weird run on sentences that have so many, asides, like really -- in case you didn't see the last comma which like (just imagine if I typed like this all the time) -- makes it really hard to understand what you are, I promise I will get to my point soon, trying to say.

I can't argue against your points directly so I will say "pohst tew harde tew reed."

Fleury's starting tonight. Back to back games so I assume Zatkoff will be play tomorrow.

so why waste everyone's time with him there now when someone that has a marginally higher though non-negative probability of being there come playoff time watches from the press box?

Because he won't be there either. So why waste that time?

Niskanen has been great all year on the pp taking over for Letang since the start of the year. But then again I'm not even surprised anymore at the changes DB does:shakehead

Clearly somebody needed to be held accountable for their zero effort performance on Monday. Its only obvious Megna falls on the sword.

"LOOK GUYS!!! LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO WITH YOUR LACK OF EFFORT!!! YOU FORCED ME TO SCRATCH MEGNA!!! You guys think about that the next time you think you can get away with performances like Monday's again."

Habs fan here, coming in peace.

Looking forward to a good bounce back game from both teams! I enjoy watching the way the pens can move the puck so well on the powerplay, I hope my team can stay out of the box.

I assume Fleury is the starter for you guys tonight?

I am bored and its a snow day here.

Frequency of the line combination (how often and how much a group has played together), point production (goals+assists), and percentage of total team points (goals+assists) are listed. Top producing lines and totals are bolded.

All bottom 6 players
LINE FREQ / PTS / TOTPTS%
Adams-Glass-Vitale 2.69 / 5 / 2.15
Adams-Glass-Sutter 2.58 / 3 / 1.29
Conner-Sutter-Vitale 2.43 / 7 / 3.00
Conner-Ebbett-Sutter 1.52 / 3 / 1.29
Adams-Kobasew-Sill 1.44 / /
Dustin-Kobasew-Sutter 1.05 / 2 / 0.86
Adams-Glass-Sill 1.02 / /
Glass-Pyatt-Sutter 1.02 / /
TOTAL / / 20 / 8.59

At least 2 bottom 6 players and points produced
LINE FREQ / PTS / TOTPTS%
Bennett-Kobasew-Sutter 0.2 / 3 / 1.29
Conner-Crosby-Vitale 0.08 / 3 / 1.29
Adams-Kunitz-Vitale 0.07 / 1 / 0.43
Adams-Glass-Malkin 0.05 / 3 / 1.29
Kobasew-Megna-Vitale 0.04 / 1 / 0.43
Adams-Kunitz-Sill 0.03 / 1 / 0.43
TOTAL / 12 / 5.16

One bottom 6 player and points produced
LINE FREQ / PTS / TOTPTS%
Jokinen - Kobasew - Malkin 2.03 / 2 / 0.86
Crosby - Kunitz - Vitale 1.27 / 1 / 0.43
Conner - Jokinen - Neal 1.09 / 3 / 1.29
Gibbons - Jokinen - Sutter 0.95 / 5 / 2.15
Jokinen - Malkin - Pyatt 0.42 / 3 / 1.29
Crosby - Glass - Kunitz 0.36 / 2 / 0.86
Bennett- Jokinen - Sutter 0.28 / 2 / 0.86
Gibbons - Jokinen - Vitale 0.26 / 3 / 1.29
Malkin - Neal - Sutter 0.22 / 2 / 0.86
Dupuis - Megna - Vitale 0.17 / 2 / 0.86
Crosby - Glass - Megna 0.13 / 2 / 0.86
Dupuis - Neal - Sutter 0.11 / 1 / 0.43
Adams - Crosby - Malkin 0.1 / 3 / 1.29
Dupuis - Malkin - Sutter 0.1 / 2 / 0.86
Gibbons - Glass - Malkin 0.03 / 3 / 1.29
TOTAL / / 36 / 15.48

For the Pens, the top 6 produce 54% (127 points) versus the bottom 6 alone producing 8.6%. In comparison the top lines in Boston produce 53.7%. The most common bottom 2 lines each produce over 5%. Anaheim's first line produces 28.7% of the Duck's points with their third line producing 17%. Due to injuries and the least TOI of all second lines in the league, I have no idea what the Duck's second line is and its production seems too complicated to figure out. Chicago's top six produce approximately 42% with 7% and 5.5% production from the 3rd and 4th lines (12.5% total). The Canucks are an interesting comparison because they play their first and second lines a lot and limit TOI for the third and fourth lines (least TOI for 3rd and 4th lines in the league). The most common top lines including the Sedins and/or Kesler account for 34.5% point production. The most frequent lines of the bottom 6 account for 14% of the Nuck's production (5.3%, 5.3%, 3.4% for the 3 most common lines).

Source of line production-Source of line TOI

Other notes: For my purposes bottom 6 players included all roster players who played more than 60 min (excludes Ebbett) and played most frequently with bottom 6 players (not Crosby, Malkin, Neal & Kunitz) which excludes Bennett, Megna & Gibbons. There might be math mistakes, and percentages do not equal zero as I didn't go through all of the top 6 line iterations for the Pens or all of the line combinations for the other teams. I also didn't track the line combinations including top 6 and bottom 6 players that didn't produce points - too many of them and used so infrequently.

For interest the most frequent top6 lines for the Pens include:
LINE FREQ / PTS / TOTPTS%
Crosby-Dupuis-Kunitz 16.13 / 57 / 24.46
Jokinen-Malkin-Neal 6.2 / 26 / 11.16
Crosby-Kunitz-Neal 2.92 / 16 / 6.87
Jokinen-Malkin-Megna 1.97 / 6 / 2.58
Crosby-Kunitz-Malkin 1.8 / 12 / 5.15
Crosby-Gibbons-Kunitz 1.56 / 6 / 2.58
Bennett-Jokinen-Malkin 1.31 / 4 / 1.72
Dupuis-Malkin-Neal 1.08 / /
TOTAL / / 127 / 54.52

The funny part is that our coaching staff should be crunching these numbers and coming to line-up conclusions but it is quite obvious they are not. Good work, though. Be prepared to see the exact opposite on the ice.
