it really is impressive how long he's continuing to be an elite goal scorer

goal scoring is typically dominated by the young, since the 70s the only player other than Ovechkin to lead the league in goals at 30+ years of age was Lemieux in 1995-96 and he did it once and at the age of 30

Ovechkin lead at 30,32,and is currently leading again at 33
there really hasnt been anyone this good, this consistently for this long in my lifetime. and he seems to care about training and health, now. i hope he can extend this another three seasons.

Can we stop with the adjusted goals, please? Unless you want to take away goals from players today considering the sticks they are using compare to ones used in the past. Goals scored are goals scored. And I know this is an Ovi thread, I think the man is great, but the players ahead of him scored their goals also. Give those players some respect.
its not really about the equipment as much as the trends. you cant give Gartner, Hawerchuk, Maruk, Gravesm Propp, Bellows, etc etc etc equal footing with 90-110pt guys of today unless you are willing to believe that every goalie in the 80s was worse than every backup today.

it isnt about the equipment, it was a different game in many ways, adifferent league - however, wooden sticks arent shit. Paul Stastyny used one for a long time. Aint no goalie considering putting on the old equipment, thats for sure. Just look at how scoring is up this seasons because the pads are a bit smaller. Never mind heavier, wetter, way smaller, with wide open hockey and less backchecking.

You can go by raw numbers if you want, so long as you rank Crosby with Hawerchuk and Grant Fuhr with some dude you play drop in with.

I pretty much ****ing despise every player that doesn’t play for the Rangers.. But I love OV. Always been a fan and very pleased he finally got his well deserved Cup.

He fell to #4 in my fantasy draft, somehow.. So I love him even more this year too.
I love how Ovi used to embarrass the Rangers on a regular basis.

So many amazing goals vs the Rangers.

Ovechkin will be #2 at the end of his career. If he stays in the NHL through the '24 season then he will have had counting this year 6 seasons to score as many goals as he can, and he will be 38 I think.

If he averages say 35 goals a year counting this year, until then, he will be in the 800's. Say he'd end at 830. He could decide to play another 3 years until he's into his 40's, well then he has a real shot at stealing 99's record.

That's a lot of what if though.

The way Ovy scores goals--like, the actual skills he uses--makes me think he's going to keep this up for a while. I think he's going to be a 30 goal, 50 point guy, even when he approaches 40.

He has an outside, but legit, shot at Gretzky's goal record, IMO. Needs about 270 to do it, and, while I think that's a stretch, it's not completely beyond the realm of possibility, and I think it's a good bet to say he has another 200 in him.

If Ovy stays in NA until he's 41 or 42, at which point he'll likely just be a one-timer, but could still a decent pp2 specialist, I don't think it's impossible.
I equate it like this: Ovechkin is like a great puncher in Boxing, insofar that even when he gets older he'll still have his power. Sure age will catch up to him and he's a big man so he'll slow down, but he'll always have his shot, that's not going to change. At 39-40 years old you could still have him as a PP specialist that needs to be respected and he'll still smoke one timers because no one is going to stop them.

To be fair it’s better
Let's not get carried away, it really isn't as devastating as it used to be and he definitely isn't able to create the space he used to to get it off. I mean watch him in his prime years, his shot is insane, from slap to wrist and he rips it at any angle with incredible pace. He could beat defenders with speed and stick handling, something he really can't do as well now and defenders have an easier time defending him 1v1. His shot is still incredible don't get me wrong, but he relies more on his savvy and his C to get him the puck in spots.

That's more refinement than a lack/loss of ability.

When Ovechkin lost whatever half-step that dropped him from "one of the league's fastest" to "really fast and strong", his rushing play style (the defenseman screen shot, the cut to center, etc.) finally started letting him down against the league's better stick defenders.

His shot is still as excellent as it ever was, it's the uncomfortable speed of his rushes that changed.

Ovy is really generational . Guy is just remarkable , he enjoys scoring every goal and has fun doing it . That’s why he is going to beat Gretzkys record . He isn’t satisfied he wants to score every game

Ovechkin hasn't scored on the powerplay in a really long time, but the even strength goals are piling up.

It must be so frustrating trying to beat Ovi in a scoring race. You go on crazy runs scoring hatfulls of goals... but he stays there, chipping away, one or two goals every game or two and just won't stop and inevitably drifts past you in the charts. Even at 33. I don't know if someone else will come along any time soon who can find the same unreal consistency.
