Ovechkin will likely overtake Sergei Fedorov and become the highest point scoring russian in NHL history. I think he needs around 20 points to get there.

That will be a terrific milestone.

Some cool stats:

Ovi has the:
5th highest goal total for a 30 year old season in NHL history (50 goals)
38th highest goal total for a 31 year old season in NHL history (33 goals "slump" year)
3rd highest goal total for a 32 year old season in NHL history (49 goals) - His 87 points was also the 9th highest point total

For a 33 year old season, the highest goal total is 54 (Jagr), and second is 46 (Dionne), if Ovi puts up 50 goals and 90 points this year, that would put him as the 2nd best goals and 9th best points ever in a 33 year old season. Considering avg. league scoring compared to back in the day, and how much faster and younger the game has gotten over the last 15 years, that is extremely impressive.

That's the thing, scoring 30+ goals or 65 points are not "rough" years. Those would be respectable numbers for any 1st line winger not named Ovechkin. It will be interesting to see who takes it between him and Laine. If those two don't win it, it will likely go to MacKinnon or Pastrnak. Still can't picture Skinner keeping up with these guys.

"Rough years" being obviously relative. By his standards there was a definite lull where one would have been forgiven for thinking his beast years were over.

Amazing player having a great season, so far. On pace for 62 goals and 102 points.

He's skating around like he's mid 20s again. It's a pleasure to watch. :)

Also, moved into 51st place all time in points scored with 1158, passing Daniel Alfredsson. Next up is Bobby Hull at 1170.

Also has now scored 750 career adjusted goals. Howe leads with 925, Jagr has 841 and Gretzky has 758.

Now has 1347 career adjusted points which is tied with Paul Coffey for 26th all time.

Can we stop with the adjusted goals, please? Unless you want to take away goals from players today considering the sticks they are using compare to ones used in the past. Goals scored are goals scored. And I know this is an Ovi thread, I think the man is great, but the players ahead of him scored their goals also. Give those players some respect.

The way Ovy scores goals--like, the actual skills he uses--makes me think he's going to keep this up for a while. I think he's going to be a 30 goal, 50 point guy, even when he approaches 40.

He has an outside, but legit, shot at Gretzky's goal record, IMO. Needs about 270 to do it, and, while I think that's a stretch, it's not completely beyond the realm of possibility, and I think it's a good bet to say he has another 200 in him.

If Ovy stays in NA until he's 41 or 42, at which point he'll likely just be a one-timer, but could still a decent pp2 specialist, I don't think it's impossible.

He's a perfect athlet like LeBron or Ronaldo.

In terms of talent yes, otherwise these guys arent from the same corner.

Ronaldo and LeBron are disciplined to obsession. They use every hour and millions of money to stay as ideally fit for their sport as possible. When they win a championship, they will be training next day again. They eat, they breath and they live their sports.

Ovie eats Mama Luccia, breathes fun, and drinks for weeks when he wins something. He just enjoys hockey, and life.

Ovies natural physics is just crazy. Altough he has started to catch up on keeping fit in his older days, which obviously is very important to stay at the top.

Thats another thing. I am in my 30s now, and if I went on the type of alcohol binges that Ovechkin did, I wouldn't feel right for a week let alone play an NHL game. I know hes now cut down some on the drinking (I think?) as he's almost hit mid 30's, but to imagine the things he did while probably having a massive hangover..

dominating goal scoring for a decade is remarkable

I still remember when people thought Stamkos was going to compete with him year after year

I even thought Tarasenko was going to be a threat 3 years ago
Bobby Clarke said that stamkos was better.. better shot, better release...

I think those players get plenty of respect. Still watching players in Gretzky's era scoring on the stickman goalies does make you wonder. I think the light equipment and the head/face protection equalizes the stick. That still leaves butterfly technique, goalie coaching, overall defensive systems, video prep working against the scoring.

Nash, Stamkos, Tarasenko, Steen, Laine, Benn ... seems like there has always been someone having a great year and threatening to unseat him.

Love Ovie as a Pens fan.

In some far off world Sid and Ovechkin are likely the best duo in history.

I think there's a definite split when this would be completely wrong and when it would be as lethal as it gets. Early in their careers there would be no chance because they both wanted to carry the puck. Once Ovy started to let his line mates carry and create so he could show up at the point of attack they'd be a perfect fit. Not to mention the fact that Crosby will actually shoot the damn thing once in a while.
