then traded for Benn, who's not any better.

Similar potential but... why make this trade? Pateryn was 26 and in the middle of his prime. There as a high degree of probability you get very good value from him for a few years. Benn came in and looked good off and on. Then became a draft lottery protection asset? :biglaugh:

Management should of realized that he was frustrated with his ice time and it was a legit concern. He deserved just as much of a shot as the other depth guys. I totally understand Pateryn and his wife's perspective. Yeah, the player is never higher than the team but the team needs to understand it from his perspective as well when there is frustration.

Not a major asset lost but still... it was a situation missmanged.

Pateryn and his wife were right. Pateryn was not getting enough ice time. We were patient and waited so long for him to develop (after we traded Grabovski) and then once he is NHL ready, we hold him down and don't give him opportunity. Yeah, he lacks some offensive skill but he's a beast in his own end and skates well. There is value there and lets face it, 50% of all D man in the NHL get like 20 pts max.

We mismanaged Pateryn
With Pateryn getting a decent contract and still regularly logging games played for Minny, it is safe to say the wife did the beneficial thing for him. 3 years, 6.75 million is far nicer than league minimum and 1 year, with the risk of riding the bus.

Patrick Berglund fall is pretty impressive. Nice throw-in in the O'Reilly deal....but that's his biggest feature. Never achieved what he was suppose to in my books.

Totally agree. As you know already.

According to Elliott Friedman, Berglund cleared waivers.

I`m intertested to hear the message from the NHLPA if/when his contract is terminated.

I agree they mismanaged Pateryn - he clearly showed an ability to be an every day NHL player with Montreal, for whatever reason, they weren't tolerant of mistakes with him

I completely disagree when it comes to Beaulieu & Tinordi though - I don't think Tinordi had ever shown an ability to be anything more than an AHL callup, which he hasn't even been in 3yrs now.

Beaulieu got his chances, numerous chances...he is what he is.

Which is pretty much what Mike Reilly is too ...

The Pateryn situation falls 100% on the player, his wife put management in a no win situation. He's not the first tweener player that struggled with getting ice time - there just isn't enough to go around to make everyone happy

His wife happily bought his ticket out of town

Ummm, Pateryn's wife saved his career.

The Habs did not know what they had. She bought his ticket out of town and now he has a legitimate NHL career.

He was subsequently let go by Dallas by UFA status.

He's not a loss to speak of, and there are enough real cases of mishandling assets to be grasping straws with Pateryn.

I had hopes...but starting to realize they're essentially EXACTLY the same.

Lots of skating, not much getting done out there though.

It’s not surprising. He’s had moments (like an excellent game vs Winnipeg the other night) but it’s not hyperbole to say he’s been mostly trash this season.

At the same time, it could be just regular growing pains of a 19 year old playing D in the best league in the world, and maybe sitting and watching a few games will be exactly what the doctor ordered.

His stock has fallen though. Even a significant number of Tampa fans are now stating he does not have top paring potential and will likely top out as a PP specialist.

I think he'll be better then just a PP specialist - but I've certainly changed my opinion on him being a Norris-level top pairing Dman.

He can be a very good 3-4Dman though, and that's nothing to sneeze at.

Let's try to nab him while his stock is low.

19 y/old

Recency bias

Watch him rise up again.

Experience and maturity brings more consistency.
