Didn't seem like he blew any coverage. It's somewhat hard to see but it was a 3 on 2 that turned into a tight 2 on 1, OJ went to block the pass and cover the player on the right side outside of the camera's view. If he went to cover the player that eventually scored, he would have left a player wide open shot on goal. The turn over in the neutral zone is what started it all.

Yeah it was a bad turnover that he got caught up in. That part of it isn't really his fault, these scrimmages are usually a little choppy.

Not taking Gaudette wasn't great. It seemed like he read what Leivo was going to do (with the back pass) and thought he could just get the puck right off him on the pass & it just didn't happen. Won't happen at this level either. That'll be part of his adjustment, but I wouldn't be picking it apart he's just starting back up again.

Just watched the highlights of today’s game... OJ completely blew the coverage on that first goal that Gaudette scored. No idea where he was going on that play.

It’s one clip and he very well might have had a wonderful game, but just didn’t really like what I saw there.

Better go back watch whole sequence he got hung out to cover a 3 on 1 took away pass and a shooter did pretty much all a coach would expect if it wasn't OJ no one would be complaining.

Pardon me? Again... I hate sitting here and over-analyzing one single clip, but that’s certainly not a 3 on 1 as Sautner already took away Leivo from being able to shoot the puck. OJ then doesn’t have his stick in the lane to cover a cross crease pass and winds up skating towards Sautner and Leivo for really no reason at all and finishes the play on the other side of the goal beside Sautner. Even if the save is made he’s in no position to help clear a rebound.

Corrected 3 on 2 initially then a 2 on 1 he takes away pass which is the right thing to do

It's a 2 on 1. OJ didn't skate to Sautner for no reason. The other player is out of camera view until the end of the clip.

looks like we will have to endlessly go over this one scrimmage play for a while longer as he is not dressing in the third preseason game.

He was ****ing horrific at ES and racked up a bunch of points on the PP. Yes, he is good on the PP. But that’s it.

And yes, a #1 pick should be taking defensive zone faceoffs in the AHL in his draft+3 season.
Just like Pouliot.

sigh.

Reading between the lines of Green's post-game presser, it appears likely Juolevi won't play a single exhibition game before he gets shipped to Utica. Given the likes of Rafferty, Teves, Chatfield, Brisebois and Sautner have all received multiple games, what gives? Not looking good.

This is probably the first time I've known well all 6 of the D in Utica/past AHL teams....

Rafferty-Teves
Chatfield-Sautner
Juolevi-Brisebois

That seems to look pretty good for the Comets, eh?
Would this be considered an above average or top 10 AHL d-corps?

That's a kinda below-average AHL defensive group.

Sautner is the only guy there capable of playing on a top pairing as a #2 defensive type. Brisebois is an OK mid-pairing guy. Rafferty and Teves are unknowns but I'm not expecting much. Chatfield struggled badly last year, and Juolevi is a 3rd pairing PP specialist.

I'm guessing much better than last year. Course, that's like saying Myers is going to be a huge upgrade over Guds.

I know what these guys are...
I was wondering how the group compares to the make up of other AHL teams... I'm pretty sure most teams also have a mishmash of dmen with varying talent and potential... Just wondering where we fall on the spectrum league wide...
(probably not answerable with further thought)

"Biega sucks. #7/8 at best."

"Well, actually both the eye test and numbers show that he far outperformed other D like Guds, Poo, MDZ etc."

"Wow, look at our D on the Comets! Top 10!"

"Well, actually all of them can't even hold a candle to Bieg. . ."

"You're toxic."

It's difficult to say, but watching other teams come into Utica last year, most had 1-2 top-pairing type veterans who were a cut above anything Utica could throw out there.

Like, from their biggest rivals :

- Syracuse had Cam Gaunce and then Jan Rutta down the stretch. Plus Cal Foote was an all-situations impact rookie.
- Rochester had Zach Redmond, Lawrence Pilut, and Matt Tennyson.
- Cleveland had Adam Clendening and Tommy Cross

... and so on. Obviously there were some other bad teams with similar bad mis-matches of defenders, but without a guy or two of real legitimate quality to carry the group, it's hard to consider them anything more than mediocre.

Pretty obvious that at this point they are just trying to protect Juolevi from getting embarrassed on the ice, and that they need to go back to square one with him in Utica. Juolevi took part in camp, scrimmage, and even said he was feeling fine, so it's a load of crap that he isn't playing.

Jimbo can't have Juolevi look bad, or it would make Jimbo look bad. "Quick, hide him in Utica - where my blind homer Vancouver audience won't see him!"

Aren’t we just screwing up his development by not playing him in the pre-season? If he is healthy and is considered a top defence prospect for the team, then there’s no excuse for this.
