Any kind of (even minor) issue is definitely of some concern. We're all just hoping for him to finally be on the right track.

Ive been saying it for months now.

This year should be expected as more or less of a writeoff. Whit the combination of surgeries he has had and the rehab periods that follow, its almost impossible for him to physically be or get to where he needs to be until 2020-21. And that is asuming he stays healthy.

I was able to talk with a spine specialist in Finland today. The micro discsectomy operation is just todays term for 99% of disc operations. It sounds like it is a lesser operation than disc surgery but it is just the lates way to do it.

Arthroscopic meniscus repair is a tier below reconstructive knee surgery but is still a major operation that requires 6 months of rehab.

I want to believe you. I really do.

At this point, I think it's safe to say that he will never live up to what one would expect from a 5th overall pick. The only question is, will he eventually become an adequate pick? Or will he end up being a catastrophic bust?
When selected a dman at the 5th overall pick you’d expect a franchise level dman(like Hughes). Juolevi was never dynamic enough to become that and we took him way to early, in not denying that. But people need to stop treating him like the second coming of Derrick Pouliot/Cam Barker.

Juolevi will be a top 4 dman, and has an exceptional hockey sense and can actually play defense. He plays really simple and would be great paired with a Troy Stetcher. Benn will be gone next year making our defense look like:

Edler-Myers
Hughes-Tanev
Juolevi-Stetcher

What exactly are you basing this level of confidence on?

If Juolevi could ‘actually play defense’, why wouldn’t Trent Cull put him out for a d-zone faceoff in the AHL last year?

Just watched the highlights of today’s game... OJ completely blew the coverage on that first goal that Gaudette scored. No idea where he was going on that play.

It’s one clip and he very well might have had a wonderful game, but just didn’t really like what I saw there.

It's to be expected this early (as he hasn't played a pro game that counted for anything in more than 6 months).

He seems like the most focused he's been. He's a good player still, he just needs to get some momentum going. I definitely still think he can be a 2nd pair puck moving PP guy.

Well its a pretty serious injury. I haven't had knee surgery, and idk if you have, but isn't some soreness when you start to really push it potentially part of the process?

He seems to be back skating well & engaging in contact today. No favoring of the knee. I think we need to wait & see still before jumping to conclusion.

Hope you’re right. I have 0 faith in the Canucks medical staff.

Didn't seem like he blew any coverage. It's somewhat hard to see but it was a 3 on 2 that turned into a tight 2 on 1, OJ went to block the pass and cover the player on the right side outside of the camera's view. If he went to cover the player that eventually scored, he would have left a player wide open shot on goal. The turn over in the neutral zone is what started it all.

In his rookie season? He played 18 games..and he has veterans he trusts more. Juolevi didn’t get a chance to do that yet due to his injury. He had 13 points in 18 games. He was good.

Why? That's exactly where his career is tracking.
Oh really? I must have missed the fact where he was given a chance and played in the NHL and was garbage? Juolevi hasn’t played a NHL game yet and was solid in his 18 game AHL stint, there is zero evidence to support the arguement that he’s tracking to be the next Derrick Pouliot/Cam Barker. They don’t even play remotely similar.

He was f***ing horrific at ES and racked up a bunch of points on the PP. Yes, he is good on the PP. But that’s it.

And yes, a #1 pick should be taking defensive zone faceoffs in the AHL in his draft+3 season.

Excited to see Juolevi if he stays healthy this year. Think he could get some NHL games. Looks like he will have a good chance to get his career back on track. I’m not going to put much stock in his first scrimmage game when he hasn’t played for 6 months. He obviously has some skill if he put up those numbers in his first time in the AHL. He obviously also needs to work on areas of his game. This year should be a make or break one.

He looked like Sbisa on that first goal. Not a good read to cause the 2on1 and then makes no effort to cover Gaudette.
yes it was poor. But what was worse was Hughes letting Ferland blow by him untouched to the net.

It's almost like these guys aren't putting it all out there to start training camp. brutal

Yeah, no point in analyzing one play in a meaningless scrimmage but I found it strange the way he skated away from Gaudette. Didn't make much sense.

Have to see how the pre-season games go but I think two posters now have mentioned a reluctance to engage physically. Which has been the primary issue with his game in the defensive zone since he was drafted. It's also an issue that will keep him out of the NHL unless it's addressed.

It makes sense if you realize it was a 3-on-1, and he was covering the highest-danger shooter (even if that shooter was Eriksson).

from eyewitness accounts it sounds like juolevi is having a decent camp so far. not quite ready for prime time but not the disaster some predict.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't think it'll be a complete write off but agree it'll still take some time for him to be physically where he needs to be. Imagine he'll use half to the majority of the year to get up to speed (as best he can), but if he can stay healthy I do think he'll make his debut at the end of the year. (should he get back too where he was then build off it, which isn't a totally unreasonable assumption IMO).

I agree his body might not be back to peak form for another year but if he can get on the right track & then get a taste I think that'll be a successful year.

Hope you’re right. I have 0 faith in the Canucks medical staff.

Understandable for sure, not a great track record lately. Fingers crossed.
