I told you guys that Holland always undersells and to not take what he says literally. Under the radar my ass haha.

The Oilers will likely go back to Smith or signing Howard if Barrie indeed signs, not much money left to address goaltending. This team will have to outscore teams next season and have more weapons to do so with Barrie, Turris and Pulju so should be a fun season.

3.75M for a year is a steal, I'm sure we'll pay for it next year though if he comes in an clicks with the boys. Lets hope he does, have no problem paying a real offensive dman who can move the puck, and anchor the PP.

Only thing that would make this signing better is if Barrie was left handed. But that's stupid good value if the money is right. Barrie gets to play all two minutes on the powerplay and probably softer zone starts at evens to drive up his value, and we get an elite player in that role who will serve as a stopgap to Bouchard. Besides rewiring Barrie's brain Holland could not have done better here.

Only thing is how the pairs work. I would guess this right now:

Nurse-Bear
Russell-Barrie
Jones-Larsson

It's not great but maybe Russell can be flipped still for a D who makes more in real dollars.

He scored at a 50+ point pace once Babcock was fired, you don't often get an offensive d-man like that for this price.

He's no great shakes defensively BUT his outlet pass and zone exit numbers are far better than OELs.

McDavid and Draisiaitl finally have a dangerous offensive D to join in off the rush other than the standard play where they cause the D to collapse and pass to an Oilers D who just shoots into the goalies crest.

Another bonus to this deal is that I bet Seattle will claim him in expansion. He has an opportunity to put up major points here, and sign a big contract with a team who will need to hit the cap floor. Seattle would be a good spot for him as a BC guy. We may be able to keep guys like Jones and Benson.

If he puts up big point totals we better be re-signing him. Next year we have a lot more capspace to work with.

It goes witho he saying that Barrie disappointed in Toronto(especially under Babcock) but that doesn’t mean he can’t still be the top pairing defensemen he was in Colorado. He wasn’t a goood fit with the Leafs due to Rielly being a power play specialist and Muzzin not being a good partner for him. I’m sure he’ll be fine, I’m all for Edmonton shoring up and having multiple successful Canadian teams.

I wonder who offered him 6 million? Detroit?

Why wasn't Muzzin a good partner for him?

I'm more interested someone else besides Bear being able to make a pass at evens.

Our PP would have been fine without Barrie, but what this signing does is keep Bear off the #1 unit so his numbers don't get inflated. It adds the RH point shot onetimer from a right half wall pass that's been sorely lacking as a new dimension to the PP. Allows Bears and Bouchard in future seasons to follow suit in Barrie's wake.

Larsson and Russell will definitely be off the books by then, so if he does produce up to expectations, the space will be there to keep him around.

Honestly, I never thought in a million years that Holland could sign an entire 3rd line of legit NHL scorers (I think Pulju will do well) and sign Barrie without moving any money out. That's pretty awesome.

Still no goaltender but the offense got quite a boost this offseason. Could be a lot of fun, and anxiety filled, 5-4 type games.

The areas where you will really see Barrie is on the breakout pass, and when he will jump up in the play in 5 on 5 situations. Unlike Nurse, he actually knows what to do with the puck.

I'd be very surprised as he will be UFA. I think Seattle takes whatever young defenseman the Oilers leave exposed. Stock up on defensemen and have a ton of tradeable assets. Squeeze a couple of teams for high picks to take bad contracts especially during covid cap era.
