Heinen hit 18 goals but wasn't qualified by Pittsburgh. He would slot in nicely at 3LW and went to the SCF with Cassidy.

I know he wasn't exactly a fan favorite in Anaheim or Pittsburgh though. The Penguins probably were worried about him getting 3M in arbitration, so he might still get ~2-2.5M as a UFA. But if he comes cheap, under 1.5M, he'd be a decent addition.

I did not even realize that he was owed more than the AAV this season. I don't think that's easy to move at all without retention, which would cause us to have to move another player.

I still have no idea what they do this offseason but I really think Pacioretty and his 7 million number is the only parachute out of the situation.

Even if they trade could Brossoit, Martinez and Patrick with no retention that might not be enough for Smith and all the RFAs depending on the deals they get.

3M is nothing to most teams desperate for a goalie that can put up close to .900. The Leafs just took back Murray with 11.25M remaining on his contract.

Perron coming back is a legit possibility IMO. He's a perfect fit, and lines up with all the talk about keeping the room happy. The only question is how crazy do they go with the term to make the AAV palatable...

Trading Brossoit + Martinez solves every issue unless they disregard our internal cap structure and heavily overpay on top of that.

Doubt Perron leaves STL, they keep trading him away and he keeps crawling back.

Rumor is contract talks haven’t gone well. If St Louis extends Perron they can’t upgrade top 4 LD because of Kyrou and Thomas extensions. And they’d have to move Tarasenko.

I’d offer some ugly term to keep the AAV down. Contract will probably look something like:
6.5 x 2
6 x 3
5.25 x 4
4.5 x 5

I have a few thoughts:

Going into next season with 4 top 6 wingers all age 30+ isn’t a good idea. They’re in a win now mentality but we still need young legs.
Our forward core has poor production on the powerplay and when trailing in tight game situations. This indicates we’re a rush team. We have two wrist shot specialists and they take the majority of shots. In stationary situations wrist shots don’t work as well that’s why we’re a rush team. We could really use a player who’s adept at getting shots away immediately instead of dusting the puck off. Maybe we should have kept Dadonov. And despite his age he was still our 2nd fastest forward. Perron would help this issue.
Given all of our forward core issues it doesn’t make any sense to start making cuts to our defense in my opinion.

I'd hope but everyone knows our cap situation too and his injury and poor season, I just think there will be some difficulty.

I wouldn't mind bringing Perron back but I don't know if he will wait for us to sort out our cap. Or if we would trade Martinez and Pacioretty in order to afford him.

The only things from those predictions that seem likely are Brossoit traded & Lehner kept, which is obvious with Burke as the director of goaltending.

My bold prediction: more LTIR dead cap & Roy & Hague miss camp and get signed on opening day. Both refuse offer sheets and Roy refuses arbitration.

(Only Roy is eligible for arbitration)

WRT arbitration.... The player usually selects arbitration, but sometimes the team selects arbitration.

The other party gets to select the term (1 or 2 years, if not taking UFA years).

The player does not have to participate in arbitration. (See the case of Korolyuk, Alexander v Sharks)

The only thing arbitration guarantees is that the player will be under contract before the start of the season.

Heinen was in and out of Cassidy doghouse. Especially after that SCF run.

I wouldn't expect that marriage to happen again

Is there any forward this guy liked?

He was a Dman in his playing days. He must have been bullied by some forwards.
Cassidy liked Bergeron, Marchand lol

"Why cant you play more like Bergeron"

This is how it felt (message to the rest of the team)

He wont stand for turnovers down the middle. And if it leads to a goal, could bench you for the rest of the period. Like a timeout/think about it

The top 6 guys will get all the offensive zone faceoffs. And bottom 6 the defensive zone faceoffs (which could hurt their offensive development).

Lastly he expects the forwards to give 2nd and 3rd efforts to skate back (200 foot game).

Not sure exactly how DeBoer was. But Cassidy wont let you off the hook.

Moving Pacioretty was a necessary move in my opinion (warning fairly long explanation).
Pacioretty’s excellent wrist shot makes him a very good finisher off the rush. However, he doesn’t have other shots in his arsenal so he’s exclusively a good finisher only off the rush. On the powerplay he is a below average finisher but continues to force shots on net, the highest rate in the league.
Pacioretty’s struggles don’t end there. When teams are leading fewer rush opportunities are given up. Since Pacioretty is a poor skater it is even easier for teams to prevent Pacioretty’s opportunities when they’re in position. As a result, Pacioretty’s finishing significantly declines whenever you desperately need an even strength goal. Additionally, Pacioretty shoots the puck even more in both of these not ideal situations.

All situations22474747941.261.262.5110.7811.64
The stats are even more dire the last 2 seasons possibly because of a decline in skating ability or possibly due to bad luck. However they are better for his career so I felt this was a fair sample.
If you’re not convinced by my evaluation these are the same reasons Pacioretty struggled in the playoffs which teams are generally more stingy. The exception being against San Jose which gives up plenty of rush opportunities.
He doesn’t provide any powerplay value, struggles to score the only time we absolutely need it, and is one dimensional offensively. I honestly think we will be just fine without him.

I think the only forward we have left that doesn't back check is Marchessault. Maybe Manninen if he even makes the lineup but I don't know about him.

To those that watched a lot of Vegas games, what's your take on Janmark? We just signed him in Edmonton and I know exactly nothing about the guy.

Surprised we didn't want to keep Janmark that low.

If he signed that for the Oilers I'm sure we could have signed him at 1.125 for one year with literally no risk and only 200k more than an ELC. Could also have waived him with no penalty if things went wrong.

Considering our third line question marks at both wings it may not have been a bad idea. And I think he is a player who plays the game the way Cassidy would like.

He should definitely go to Dallas. Almost everyone hates Dallas in just about everything, one of the most despised guys in hockey would be a perfect fit. Plus they would still be a long way from contending.
