My stepdad's grandson (not sure what I call him in relation to me?) has been in the hospital the last couple days. They ran some tests that preliminarily show he may have some type of bone cancer. Supposed to find out for sure tomorrow. He's only 12.
Oh no...That is terrible. Sending healing thoughts.

How a person treats animals tells me most of what I’ll ever need to know about them.
agreed, what angers me more is how many people have these pets yet don`t walk them or give them all they need. To own a pet is a massive commitment (I`ll speak only on dogs as I`m terribly allergic to cats). Prior to Mrs Odaat and I adopting our previous Beagle who was a rescue whose owner lost her husband and she was to frail to offer him what he needed, we sat down and asked each other a few things

A) can we financially afford a dog, can get expensive

B) are we committed to giving this dog , specifically this breed all that they require to maintain their spirit?

Meaning are we going to be THAT pet owner who let`s their dog out in the yard and deems that to be "excercise" or are we the type who will be willing to pile all of us into our car and hit great trails/parks, expose him/her to other dogs and get some solid bonding and exercise time?

We have tons of dogs in our little condo community here, if I were to ball park the average length of walk my neighbors take their dogs on I don`t think I would be underestimating it if I were to say about 10 minutes and they scream at their pooches because all they do is bark the second they get outside

Something else I despise is watching owners yank on their dogs by the neck when they are frustrated with them, like to yank the owner`s by the neck and see how that suits their fancy

I know not everyone is able to do this financially and my wife and I are so grateful we are but we send Miss Penny (avatar) on daily pack walks with this great woman who takes 4 other dogs Monday to Friday on loads of different trails around Victoria, goes for 90 minute walks on these trails, gets great socialization and exercise and while I still give her a nice walk in the afternoon, it`s one that isn`t as taxing on her body as hitting a trail can be at times. All this pays off in spades when it comes to behavior, when it comes to times Mrs Odaat and I have to go out for a few hours, we know Penny has been well exercised and will not sit and bark for hours

I`ve said it often, if we had more space and a fenced in yard, we`d have a half dozen pooches, few things are more selfless than and fulfilling than providing a 4 legged friend with a great life

Yep. One of my father's favorite sayings was "Do you know why people abuse waitresses? Because they think they can. Don't be that person."

Of course he'd say wait staff today, but you get the point. I always over tip, and if the food is bad, I ask to see the chef or manager, and the wait person still gets a good tip.
Yeah, I get pretty fired up when people mistreat waitstaff. Especially when they're clearly new to that line of work.

Anyone who mistreats a pet deserves to be fired into a lava pit. There is no room in this world for this type of behavior.

We dodged a bullet last night with Finn. My mom had to rush him to VCA because he had some sort of attack. They couldn't find anything wrong with him and think something got caught in his throat and when my mom picked him up it dislodged and he was fine.

Scared the crap out of us both and my sister's dog. He seems to be himself today which is a relief. He's 1 1/2 and I can't imagine life without him.

me too but of course I speak as a 30+ year F and B veteran. I worked for a terrific couple in Ottawa at a great Italian joint, very small restaurant that was packed every night, they treated everyone from the dishwashers to their manager with the upmost respect but what I loved most about them was this, they did NOT approach their business with the "customer is always right" BS. One evening, a peer of mine had a difficult table who led her to be in tears at one point when she came into the kitchen. Without hesitation, Mario approached the table and while I didn`t hear what he said to that table, I did see him pick up their plates, hand them to the busboy to have him pack, went and got the reservation book and showed them a packed book of people on a wait list to get a table in the restaurant. He escorted them out the door

What he told us after the shift was this, NOBODY will be mistreated or disrespected when working for he and his wife, he told the guest their behavior was unacceptable and told them their evening was done. I asked him what the reservation book thing was about and he said the guests told him they`ll shut the place down with all the bad reviews they were going to give, he walked over and picked up the reservation book to let the guest know he`s going to be ok

Being a server is tough, he** , being in the kitchen even tougher, the business is not one for everyone, far more to it than simply writing an order down and the hours are unforgiving. Be kind and tip your server(s) HOWEVER, if they are not or do not meet expectations, tip accordingly. I know when I haven`t done my best on a particular shift, I`ll understand a tip that isn`t on par with my usual

Once I got so pissed off at a guy abusing a bartender, I walked up behind him, put a vice-like grip on the back of his neck, pressed his head against the bar, then kindly explained to him that she was a human being just trying to do her job and asked him to apologize.

He apologized.

There's a famous story about a woman who sued Jasper White because Jasper threw her out for abusing the wait staff. Jasper (a rather large man) heard a loud commotion, came out of the kitchen, and asked her what her problem was. She said her steak was awful. He asked her if it was the steak she ordered. She said yes. He asked her if it was cooked to her liking. She said yes. He asked her "Well then, what is the problem?" She said the steak was awful. Jasper then told her "Well, then you can get out of my restaurant!" (with a choice expletive thrown in), tossed her, and kindly comped the rest of her party's meals.

He got a standing O from the rest of the diners.

Oh, and she lost the lawsuit.

I think we'd get along in that regard.

I took a guys beer once and slammed it in front of him and told him to get the f*** out of the bar. He demanded a beer, asked for all his change back, didn't say thank you. Everyone got a pretty big kick out of it. Saw him again the next week and he was a little more friendly.

No time for that stuff, hahaha.

Yeah, the guy I confronted was saying really crude sexual things. Like ultra crude. I had to stop it, it was turning my stomach (and I'm no prude).

Just did some further research and that place looks beautiful.

-45 is a bit much lol but other than that seems like an awesome place
Summers are super short, but incredible. 22-24 hour daylight. We start a golf tournament at midnight up here. Lots of people travel from different countries, haha.

But yeah, took me a year to adapt to everything. Dark winters, super daylight summers. Been here 20 years now, move from the east coast when i was 10.

So next question- how did you become a B's fan living in Yellowknife? Who do most of the folks there support?

Well, I was born on the east coast, so there's tons of Bruins fans in Newfoundland. It's pretty much Toronto, Boston, Montreal & Detroit there. So my dad is a die hard Bruins fan, so naturally i inherited it from him.

Here in Yellowknife it's a lot of Oiler fans, as we're fairly close to Edmonton, Toronto fans, and Hab fans. Not many fans of teams from the states.

I'd say it goes...
Edmonton/Toronto
Montreal
Vancouver/Calgary

Then a mixed bag of teams.

Holy **** you live in the Arctic pretty much. Is there any polar bears in that area?
Not where I live, I'm more inland so we don't see them. Just black bears and the occasional Grizzly bear. Typically you'll see them in the high arctic and communities around the ocean. Upper Manitoba gets them pretty frequently (Chuchill area) - From what i gather, they're pretty vicious as they're basically always feeding.

We get lots of wolves and Wolverines.

I've never so much as raised my voice to wait staff. If I don't like the service I just give a smaller tip and if it is really bad I don't go back. Nothing to it. There's no reason to cause an uproar or to embarrass anyone including yourself.

I find it interesting that November is historically your snowiest month. Gonna guess it gets too cold after that to snow as much. That super-cold air can't carry enough moisture to snow a lot.

I did a deployment to Iceland in 96. We did a midnight 5k on the solstice. Weird to run at midnight and be able to see everything fine.

I'll bet the mosquitoes are like hawks up there.

Same. I never make a scene. If i don't like the food, I won't come back. I get embarrassed for people who cause an uproar, honestly.

As for servers, my mom was a waitress growing up and my ex-wife was too, so I always overtip if anything. I also realize that adding just a couple of bucks might make the tip seem quite generous and let the server know s/he did a good job, and to me it only costs a couple of bucks. And I like to think I'm extra patient with new servers too. Everyone's been new at their job at some point. The one thing that really bugs me is the completely absent server. I get it that sometimes you're short-staffed, but it still irks me when you go 20-30 minutes without even seeing them, especially when you're trying to get your check.

Believe it or not, we get mosquitoes here in the desert too, just not NEARLY as bad as other places I've lived. Maine? Awful. NE Mass, terrible. Even West Florida was bad. Here, I'll deal with the heat not to have brutal cold or brutal mosquitoes.
