Good points from this article: Toronto Maple Leafs: Unlucky Nylander Due for Explosion

"Or his team leading possession numbers? Not too sexy! Or what about the weird amount of times he’s started a play only to end up being the third assists (not a thing) or to see the guy he passed to completely robbed or hit the post? Or that the WOWYs (with you, without you) show that of the five most common linemates of Nylander’s, four of them improve when he’s on the ice with them. Or what about the fact that the Leafs get their highest rate of shots per minute with Nylander on the ice? Or that 56% of the total scoring chances when he is on the ice go to the Leafs? (Also the highest on the team). Kadri (most common Nylander linemate) has one goal since Nylander returned to the lineup, but he’s also playing well (but people aren’t mad at him, so he is avoiding the heat). Matthews has one goal in his last eight games. If there guys are scoring – and all the numbers say they are getting unlucky – then Nylander is piling up assists and we aren’t having this conversation. Nylander has a personal shooting percentage of 4.35% and an on-ice shooting percentage of 6.31% which is crazy-low and about half of what it can be expected to be normally..."

Heck, even yesterday:
- Lead team in possession with 70 CF%
- Had a High-Danger CF% of 77% with 7 High-Danger shots For and 2 against. But guess what? Those 2 against were 2 of Bostons goals against. Our 7 for? Nope, 0 scored on that.

Our team in itself is being unlucky. Matthews AND Kadri have NOT been hot at all. They've been playing great but they haven't had luck go there way too (How many times have you seen Matthews miss an open net his whole career vs this slump? Just be patient. Wait for the team itself to turn around. Nylander is a full-on playmaker. If his linemates aren't hot, then he's not going to be putting up those crazy point totals either. That's why ALL the other stats show his play as being great now but no production.

If you've followed N.Backstrom throughout his career like I have, you'll know that when Ovechkin and/or team is in a slump Backstrom is in a slump as well.

I would even take a 2nd assist now willy just freakin' get something going man...

may be babcock should swap nylander-marner

JT may help willy going
Marner will definitely help kadri going (may be marleau as well)

P.S. Matthews is fine; he doesn't need anyone to get him going; he has been good and he will figure it out

I'm at the point where I think Dubas should be fired over the contract. What happened with Nylander was SOOOOO important in setting the stage for Marner and Matthews contracts.
I have a feeling that in the near future we're all going to look at the Nylander overpayment as the beginning of the end of something that could have been so special.
I would think shanny had to approve this especially the front loaded part
an early exit and the June board meeting might be a dandy
but no doubt only the leafs would overpay and frontload a contract
funny Dylan larkin could have sat out
I guess parental guidance varies in the hockey world

I kind of disagree. He scores even when he's not going because he's Matthews, but I'd like to see him with Marner for a bit. See if we can't get him going.

Oh I asked you to do that please post where I asked you to do that. Poster I replied to implied he could be impartial and judge him on the playoffs while also calling him “soft Swedish meatball” if you can’t see the built in hatred and bias a lot of posters here have it’s very evident it doesn’t matter what nylander does now their small minds are made up

He has created the image for himself.

He held out half a season to get paid more than far superior players on divisional rivals team.

That's all well and good, if he can play up to his contract. All will be forgiven

However not only did he look like a complete ass, for the holdout, he looks like a completely disinterested player on the ice.

This has obviously pushed off the majority of the fan base, as it should.

If this guy came in and scored 12 points in 15 games, no one would have been complaining.

I guess I should have, problem is ALL leafs fans have to deal with the **** years too.

I don’t love every leaf player far from it but while they are in a leaf jersey I want them to play well. For example I think brown hasn’t been great this year and hope we look to move him on, but when he scores I cheer and yell broooown.

Some here have such a hatred for nylander whenever he does something good they can’t turn back into leaf fans and be happy. There was a poster that claimed the 1 goal (1 goal clearly isn’t good enough so far by th way) was because of matthews, if you remeber matthews barely even touched that puck, and that’s just a single example

Yup agreed. I didn't like Marleau/Brown/Hainsey's play on-ice but I do notice their good plays and feel great for them when they score. Over the years, I've become somewhat of a 'well-rounded' fan. When people shit on Gardiner/Kadri/Kessel/etc, I'm there to defend. Heck, when people were ripping on Marner during his first-quarter season slump last year, I was there to defend him. Now it's shifted to Nylander, so I'm here to defend him till he gets back to normal just like all the others have. If there's a lot of evidence to suggest a player's getting unlucky, then that's my #1 support argument. It always works out, because that's how those 'unlucky' stats go. They go from unlucky to lucky then to normal.

Over-exaggerating on here has been quite common. I saw another poster (probably the same one) say the team has been playing terribly the past stretch because the players are pissed at Nylander's contract. They literally blamed hockey games on something not even related to the hockey game!? Some of these posters are very confusing.

Willy had his best game last night.imo.
No points, but played with the most compete I have seen him play with this year. Now, let's see that effort on a nightly basis, although it should have already been happening on a nightly basis.

Matthews-Marner will never play together as long as Babcock is coach I think.

Even in Game 7 against Boston he only put Matthews-Marner on for only one shift in the 3rd period when we were trailing thats it

Think, Matthews will eventually get going; I think this being his contract year as well my guess is that he is playing cautiously

may be dubas brought up injury prone narrative in the negotiations; his agent told matthews to be careful :dunno:

You may not be complaining but there would still be quite a few complaining. Unfortunately nylander has been complained about since his first full season by more than a few and there is nothing he can do.

Example
Nylander: 1st full season 26 pp points
Posters: he is just a pp specialist

Marner: 2nd full season 27 pp points
Poster: he may be the best player on the pp in the league (this was no more than only a couple of posters saying this to be fair)

Agreed New Jersey he wasn’t bad either. And it’s about time too. I think Hayes said it on overdrive, that he thinks nylander has the slow start after a holdout and just as he started to get his legs he went into a slump I think that may be what happened too. Players slump all the time this was terrible timing for nylander as he needed to prove himself to the fan base again. If he plays like that next few games he’ll get his points. I’m sure babs pulled willy into the video room and said “look at this play and this play and this play, they are all fantastic you keep doing that and you’ll be scoring in no time”

Pasternak did not even consider holding out for more money. Owning the leafs is plenty.

bottom line is if Nylander started living up to the contract he signed he wouldn't be subjected to the ridicule he's getting, cause and effect, it's as simple as that.

YOU speak of "impartial judgement" maybe you should call a spade a spade instead of defending a player who has been pretty much invisible thus far. Nylander needs to play better, like light years better than his efforts thus far.

bottom line is if Nylander started living up to the contract he signed he wouldn't be subjected to the ridicule he's getting, cause and effect, it's as simple as that.

You have to understand what a slump is. Players, star players, included ALL have signficant unordinary slumps randomly in their careers. This is shown by the stat on-ice sh% and sh%. If a player has a insanely low oish% and sh%, while having amazing possession and scoring chances stats, then he's unlucky and will go back to normal soon.

Remember that slump Crosby had? Everyone thought he was in the decline and that injuries had ended his career. In the 2nd half of the season he destroyed it and posted his regular season points.

Remember that slumo Ovechkin had? Everyone thought Ovechkin had been 'figured out' and that he wouldn't be able to score goals anymore in todays NHL. He still posted 30+ goals by the end of the season, and returned to normal the following seasons after.

This has happened to everyone around in the league before. Giroux, Voracek, Bergeron, etc in the past couple of seasons. Heck even Kadri few years ago and Marner last year. So stop overthinking it. Look at the logical explaination and stop jumping to conclusions that this is the end.

It's coming in grossly out of shape that really was the final straw for me. In the defensive zone, barely moving, you can bet if it was an offensive chance, he would have found a little more in him. I saw Ennis out there on a broken ankle playing defense, but little princess couldn't bother to ride the exercise bike during his vacation.
