I don't understand why the Fenton couldn't have offered something like this for Gusev. Would he not be a good fit with Kaprizov?
Gusev led the KHL in assists and Kaprizov led in goals.

Could be the contract Gusev was looking at. We always say this when a prospect is traded for what fans think is a low amount.

Ah, 2 years, 4.5 million - that's a ton of money for an unproven winger. Hell, Panarin signed for 6 million AFTER he had two seasons of 30+ goals.

Yeah, NJ has a lot of cap space to throw around. We aren't exactly in the same boat.

Gusev in would probably mean Zucker out and who knows if that would even be a net gain.

Though they have to re-sign Taylor Hall, Nico Hischier after this season. Hischier might not command a lot, but Hall might see a pretty good raise.

Would've been able to get more than a 2nd + 3rd for Zucker though. I have a feeling this guy is gonna put up big numbers next year. Really wish we would've just taken a gamble, not much reason not to at this point.

They have the money for both quite easily still. $38M in space next summer.

They have TENS of Millions in Cap space... as in multiple TENS!

They have nothing to worry about.

They will need to replace Taylor Hall and two of their top 4 defensemen. They also have 5 RFA. Let's say Hall does sign an extension for 8.5 million, that's now 29.5 and two top 4 defensemen isn't going to cost less than 10 million together. So, let's say it averages out to 12 million, that's already 20.5 million, leaving 17.5 million. Let's say ALL of their RFA come back including Hischer for 10 million, leaving 7.5 million. Not much to go out and spend on free agency?

Well, in your scenario, they already went out and got 2 top 4 defensemen in free agency. And with Hall, Hischier, Hughes, Gusev and Palmieri already in the top 6, they don't have a drastic need to go get a top end forward.

So they're still sitting pretty good.

It might honestly be as simple as swapping two disappointing players with bad contracts.

Team identity-wise, the Flames are historically the more aggressive, defensive, and more grinding type team....which seems to be more a Lucic forte than Neal.
Edmonton, on the other hand, is usually known for the fast skating, more north south, kill'em with offense, worry about defense later type team....and Neal has a good track record under those types of conditions (Pittsburgh, Vegas, Nashville)...so maybe the thinking is he may fit better there.

Yes, yes, Calgary has gotten better offensive players in recent years, but still, even today, at their best, they are in your face, hitting everything that moves, and just generally super tough to play against.
Milan Lucic with the Bruins was just like that.

Neal has played with the likes of Sidney Crosby, Gino Malkin, Filip Forsberg, and Willie Karlsson...all fantastic, fast offensive types....now he is on a team with McDavid and Draisaitl...taking nothing away from guys like Monahan and Gadreau of course.

Anyways, just thinking aloud to try and answer your question.

But really...two highly paid players not really doing much for their current teams....swapp'em...can't hurt.
