Did someone say that small players can't be tough?

Almost all of the top agitators of all time were under 6'

Its not so much about being big or small or tough. Its about being good at hockey. So much talk about "playoff hockey" and playing heavy and being tough when the goal is to score goals. I find that the goaltending performance and skill of players is kind of getting underrated here.

The Great Debate

That isn't that great of an argument. I would have to check each of those years but it seems like only 1 player under 5'10 was top ten in playoff scoring in any given year. That means that a player under 5'10 has roughly a 10% chance of being top ten in playoff scoring. As opposed to a 90% chance that to be a player top ten in playoff scoring they need to be 5'10 or taller. Logic would suggest that it is better to draft, sign and trade for players 5'10 or taller if a team is looking for a player to be top ten point producer in the playoffs.

Small players can be effective but in general it is not preferable to target small players. It is more of a cost incurred to acquire other attributes. Some smaller players have great speed, skill and compete and they just lack size. Sometimes the speed, skill and compete are worth the cost of size.

Well to score goals a player needs to possess the puck and be in a scoring position. There are territorial battles for ice position and there are intense battles for loose pucks. It doesn't matter how skilled a player is if they can't battle for loose pucks, steal pucks, retrieve them in the corner and battle for position. All of the successful skill players are capable at doing that. They aren't knocked off the puck easily. They win races to loose pucks and can out battle other players to retrieve the puck or to get into good positions. They win because the out compete their opponents.

It is the whole dog fight saying. It isn't the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog. Players both big and small will be beat by players who have more fight in them and are willing to battle harder. Skill players that are successful don't shy away from the dirty areas.

Elite skill with elite compete level is the most desirable combination. Skill without compete doesn't end up being very helpful in the playoffs.

People that are jealous of how the bruins are built....look at them. This is their peak. Their best players can’t carry them for much longer and they’re prospects aren’t great.
