Really I always thought he did, oldest guy to hit 50 goals I think then?

That could be true. He had 51 in 70-71 at the age of 35, but he was only 2nd in goals that year behind his teammate Esposito (who had 76).

Crosby is the better player and has had a better career . Those who disagree and choose Ovechkin also probably believe Brett Hull was a better player and had a better career than Steve Yzerman .
Except Ovechkin is a better player than Brett Hull and a better goal scorer.

Also, going down as the games greatest goal scorer is a pretty tough thing to overcome when you're removed a few decades from both players careers.

That's a surprise to me. They've probably been close most seasons though.

Who scored more points each year since the lockout for reference sake:

2013- Tie
13-14- Crosby leads by 25
14-15- Crosby leads by 3
15-16- Crosby leads by 14
16-17- Crosby leads by 20
17-18 Crosby leads by 2

Both are tied at 66 points so far this season.

Crosby is considered now and will always be considered the better player and having the better career .The comparison was Hull who was a goal scorer to Yzerman who was the better player and had the better career. Just as the comparison is Ovechkin who is the goal scorer to Crosby who is the better player and having a better career .

He's probably been the better player because of superior regular season consistency (hasn't had down seasons like Ovechkin's 65 or 69 point seasons) and the advantage in the playoffs, but better career is debatable. Some would take all those awards Ovechkin's won, the fact that he's arguably the greatest goal scorer ever and a single Cup over a better career PPG, two Smythes and three Cups. That really just comes to down a matter of preference.

Conveniently you left out the number of games played 2012-2013

5 Conference final is better than 1
4 Stanley Cup final is better than 1
3 Stanley Cups is better than 1
2 Olympic Gold medals is better than 0

Basically being tied in points despite playing over 140 fewer games .
Crosby is the better player Crosby is having a better career .

Those are all team achievements, though.

Mike Richards had five CF appearances, three SCF appearances, two Cups and a Gold medal and he won't even make the Hall of Fame.

I'm not even saying I necessarily think Ovechkin's career has been better, but I can see why someone would if she/he values individual accomplishments more.

Crosby has plenty of individual awards that really are meaningless just as Ovechkin's are . The goal is to win if you don't agree that's fine. I bet McDavid would trade his individual awards if it meant he could play on a team that had a chance to win.

The "goal" is to win, but that doesn't make a player better than another. Or were you one of those "Toews > Crosby" when the cups were 3-1 for Toews? Is Kunitz the best player? Definitely has had the best career right?

Crosby has has more assists in his career than Toews has total points in his career. ..Crosby has played 69 more games and has 451 more points than Toews who is a product of the media trying to find a player better than Crosby .. The two players at least have to be comparable ..Crosby is the better player and is having the better career. Crosby will always be ahead of Ovechkin ,Toews , and yes even Kunitz when the best players in the history of the league are talked about and ranked.

I also prefer Crosby's career to Ovechkin, but it's far from being inarguable, and there is definitely time for things to change. What country you're born in, or what club team you've played on, shouldn't dictate who the better player is individually, Olympic gold medals are not only a team accomplishment, but being Canadian is obviously a HUGE advantage.

Nope. But your entitled to your opinion. Crosby is a 200 foot player at this point trusted in all situations of the game. Ovechkin is a goal scoring winger

He didnt look like a one dimensional scoring winger when he knocked out the Penguins, won the Stanley Cup and took home the Conn Smythe.

He put it all on the line. He has shown he can do it all.

This narrative of a one dimensional winger at this stage of his career is far from the truth.

Black + Gold = Pittsburgh
3 cups > 1 cup

Let's not act like Ovechkin had the 'team' disadvantage that McDavid currently has. There were multiple presidents trophy winning Cap teams that couldn't get past that 2nd round. The 3 Capital teams that the Pens beat on the way to their 3 (post lockout) cups were higher seeds. If you would like to suggest that Crosby has been carried; go and check out who has the highest playoff PPG of all active NHL players.

Make all the lame/disingenuous Kunitz & Draper comments you want. These are 2 star players who have been compared since the day they entered the league together. They both have had the good fortune of playing on good teams. Cups matter. They should matter. And 3 cups >1 cup.

Career value is certainly arguable. Crosby being the better hockey player over his career should be inarguable. Crosby being the superior all around hockey player is also inarguable.

Being unlucky with injuries, while having some relevancy, does not eliminate the clear per game superiority that Crosby has shown. This is not an Eric Lindros situation. Crosby can make the case for having the best resume after 14 years/by age 31, over any other player in NHL history other than the Big 4.

OV has four or five years, and a couple of playoff runs, worthy of Top 5 player ever consideration, Crosby has many more of those.

Two players come into the league at the same time. They have the same points but one of them has 200 more goals, more mvps, and way more hardware.

Ovechkin is the superior player and that is inarguable. Hard for the Canadians to see outside their bubble though.

No. It's everything, including beyond just the statsheet. Goal differential is the biggest factor in wins and losses and play drivers and elite possession players create scoring chances for themselves and others and keep the puck away from the other team and off the scoresheet. This aspect of the game has been a big edge for Crosby since Ovechkin's peak, and he's been incredible at it this season. There's a lot of value in players who can score from anywhere, but you guys still overrate the importance of being the guy who actually finishes the play.

Possession is fantastic if it leads to something.

Who created more goals between the two since "Ovechkin's peak":

'18-'19 - Ovechkin, so far
'17-'18 - Ovechkin
'16-'17 - Crosby (led NHL)
'15-'16 - Tie
'14-'15 - Ovechkin (led NHL)
'13-'14 - Crosby (led NHL)
'12-'13 - Ovechkin (led NHL)

In their careers Ovechkin has led the NHL in goals created five times, Crosby twice.

Also, why is so hard to admit that Ovechkin has been the better player of the two the last two seasons, when he clearly has?

He also left out that Ovechkin has 95 more goals than Crosby in that time period. (That's 3 years worth of goals by Crosby standards.)
Who suggested Crosby was the better goal scorer ? Crosby is the better player and is having a better career.

How Ovechkin has more MVP’s than Sid?

As far as I know both have 4 MVP (season + playoff combined). Try again.

And the fact that you value goals higher than points is purely subjective. Yes Ovy has more goals than Crosby, but Crosby has a better PPG and never produced under a ppg throughout his career. Can’t say the same with Ovechkin

Sid is the better hockey player in terms of all around game and has been a more consistent offensive player for the last 13 years.

The Conn Smythe is a far lesser trophy than the Hart because it's basically the best player from two teams (really 1 team) whereas the Hart is the most valuable player in the world.

Crosby deserved one of the CS's, and the other was a complete disaster where it was gifted to him out of raging bias (much like some of his secondary assists). Crosby had 19 points and 6 goals in 24 games while playing crappy defense as a minus player. The Penguins were net losing with Crosby on the ice and he was a complete no-show in their most difficult series (against the Capitals) scoring a paltry 2 secondary assists - 1 even strength point in 6 games. That's a 65 point / 21 goal / negative 8 pace, and you are arguing that this is on the level with Ovechkin's 65 goal / 112 point season or Ovechkin's 56 goal / 110 point season.

^^^That is beyond absurd.

There is absolutely no case for Crosby over Logan Couture. And to a lesser (but still substantial) extent Letang was also better than Crosby, as was Phil Kessel.

Ovechkin has 3 Harts. Crosby has 2.

And the fact that you value goals higher than points is purely subjective.

It is absolutely not subjective. Primary assists are a legit stat. Secondary assists are noise. Garbage. Virtually meaningless.

In order to realize that you would have to comprehend the data, and the game.

Some NHL Stars Get More Assists At Home Than They Deserve

Simplify scoring: drop the pointless secondary assist
