Speculation: Montreal is now clearly a seller

What about next year Sherlock, did you look those numbers up?

Besides retention, there are creative ways to trade players to make cap work. Are you saying that the only way this could work is through retention or are you saying that you can not see any way this could work?

Why retention?

According to Cap Friendly, they have plenty of deadline cap space:

Pittsburgh: 8 853 651 $

Winnipeg: 24 241 664 $

if mtl is rebuilding/retooling and selling these assets, this can maximise value. If we ever traded price and weber, we might have to ensure we make the floor.

do you think Bergevin is selling Tatar and Petry this year?
If he is not he should. Teams need to manage both an age window and a cap window. A poor example is the leafs. Good age Window and brutal cap management window. Selling off Petry as and Tatar as 30 plus players who can get price and term does not make sense when you are a bottom 8 team in the league. Makes no sense to tie up $14 plus annual cap dollars to resign both of them. Use price and Weber to lead the team and develop players.

Management has to come out at some point and be honest about selling... This Washington game just shows the obvious: lot of work but not enough talent to finish.

Kovalchuk has quit on every team and is 37 years old in April. We should not be in a hurry to sign. Sign the guys like gally
Kovalchuk is well rested and playing well. He has some issues yes, but his skill is undeniable. For the short term he can be among best players in NHL. If he is the difference between a cup win or going out in 2nd round. You are only gambling a 3rd round or is equivalent. Maybe 2nd round if bidding gets high.

Best buyer for Domi ? No. Guy is a 2C, best bid be damned. If the offer isnt real good we keep him.

Done. Make it a conditional 2nd if the Oilers advance past the 1st round and Kovalchuk is at least a 0,5 ppg player for you until the end of the regular season.
I would not give any conditions on the pick. Kovalchuk is found treasure for MTL and he is not going to be a player for the oil beyond this season.

He is, but I fail to see how it should lower his value in a trade.

I'm not saying no to your offer, but in that case I'd wait until the last moment in case something better comes up.
That offer won’t be from the oilers as they need entry level players going forward, so the 1st and 2nd pick need to be off the table for this year and next.

Go ahead and make an offer to convince Montreal to sell a player who, as you have correctly assumed, they don't want to sell. The ball is in your backyard.

Now would be a great time to trade Armia. 1st rounder needed coming back and late pick. Habs can add a 3rd

Armia + 3rd for 1st and 5th

Armia is the only winger with size in that top 9. The guy is awesome, only 26, signed for cheap and still RFA at the end of his deal. Won't go anywhere. Why would Montreal trade him for a late first that *might* become as good as Armia? Makes no sense.

You have more chance getting Domi than Armia at this point.

Actually Armia is a UFA when his contract expires after next season, along with Danault, Gallagher, Tatar, and Petry. Habs need to start planning for this now. It is unlikely that they will re-sign them all and are not in a position to let them walk away for nothing.

My mistake. Thought him and Lehkonen were RFA after their deals.

Thompson for a 4th
Kovalchuk for a late 2nd
Cousins for a prospect and 4th
Weise for a good AHL contract
Kulak for 5th and AHL player
Tartar for a 1st and a good prospect

That's funny. Over value much? Good luck Habs.
