Jets wanted to remove all the cap hit, and Armia was the cost. Not to mention, Armia was a RFA so maybe he was asking for more than the Jets wanted to give.

Montreal can retain half, then trade Mason for a pick like a 4th-5th.

It's why having a deep prospect pool is an asset. You can "buy" your way out of mistakes. Armia is a good bottom 6 player, but the Jets have lots of guys that can step in to replace him from their deep pool.

No, I get how it works for the Jets. I just didn't see Montreal being able to flip him, even if half retained. That was the point I was making - Mason is negative value.

Seems that was correct - buyout was the escape hatch.

Considering our cap space, I wouldn't have minded us doing that and putting Armia in our bottom six if his RFA ask was right.

That +/- of Crosby and Kopitar is pretty crazy.

You can really see who played for good teams and who played for crappy teams in that timespan.
