I don’t really do the whole instaface or twizzler thing (lol Belichek) but can’t you just turn off messages coming in to your page?

I think that would be even more entertaining.

If I won a cup I’d take pictures of me shining my ring. Then superimpose different parts of the opposing teams city in the background. With the knowledge out there people are furious they can’t respond. Ah, happy times!

Seriously though. Has anyone ever in history got a twit back and said ‘y’know, that fine internet stranger has really changed my perspective on life’. No? Then why read it?

Behold the dark side of social media.

I can't say I'm surprised. Annoyed and disgusted, but at this point...not at all surprised.

Nobody is actually going to choke slam the dog.

Maybe it's just me, but that comment is pretty funny IMO.

Town NHL hates !
While I think this is reprehinsible behavior, I view it more of a byproduct of passion and love for the sport. Let's not judge the group by the actions of the vocal minority.

On a separate note, I couldn't imagine the collection of hate mail Benning has accumulated over his tenure. No wonder Friedman was talking about how downtrotten he is.

Honestly it's the vocal minority who takes a gun, enters a school and does something incredibly stupid.
It's the vocal minority who takes a gun, enters a mosque or a church and causes mayhem. In their head, every like, every comment, every share becomes an approbation for the actions they end up committing.

By no means should we minimize the sheer stupidity of the people who make those kinds of comments.

But at the same time, messages like "kill yourself", "die in a fire", "get cancer", etc are part of internet culture. Unless someone's making an actionable threat, this seems like a non-issue.

Brings me back to 2011.

Hopefully these "fans" stop it in a hurry.

Who needs enforcers in the NHL now when you have fan justice and retribution. It's a slippery slope, the smaller guys are incredibly skilled and entertaining, but they are easier to injure. It's reached a point now where the league has to make a decision to either protect the talent of the game or the protect the tough ruggedness of the game.

It appears the league has made their choice with the suspension. It's probably the smart business decision though as nobody fills up buildings to watch the Mike Matheson's of the world play tough defense whereas guys like Elias Pettersson sell out buildings, increase jersey sales and change franchise fortunes around.

This comment is idiotic because Matheson isn’t known for his defense. Small little shell you live in.

That is today in a nutshell right there. Politics, Sports... anything else that makes people passionate. Morons will make threats.

The internet is like the virtual version of driving in your car. Everybody has everything to say within their car, but very rarely out in person.

Or whatever he is, it could've been anyone that got suspended. My point was that the NHL cares about who rakes in the most dough and with this suspension, it looks like they've made a stand on who they care more about, the smaller, skilled stars of the league instead of the rough and tumble plays of the NHL.

EDIT: Also, I never said that Mike Matheson is known for his defense. I just said specifically, that the play in itself was tough defense.

And that’s fine. The skill of the game should shine more than the rough stuff.

You can make your pages private, where the only people who can follow/interact with you are people that you add as a friend or follow them.

The issue arises that I think players really like being able to connect with the fans on a somewhat personal level and fans can show their support and all that. It would be a shame for players who are active on social media to have to close all of their good fans out from social media just because of the small number of idiots.

They read it because they still want to interact with their friends/family/whoever on social media. I imagine that Matheson logged onto social media like any other day, expecting to get some hate mail, sure, but probably didn't anticipate actual death threats.

Embarrassing.

As a Canucks fan, I was never really that upset with Matheson. Sure, the "choke slam" to the ice was unnecessary, but whatever. Stuff like that is going to happen. I was more upset at my team for not getting in Matheson's face for it.

Oh I for sure understand the whole friend chatting part. Well maybe not people with 2000 ‘friends’ on the Facebook.

But you couldn’t pay me enough to sift through all the garbage you would get on a daily basis from the general public. Even before I did something to infuriate another fan base

I can't imagine that he does that, but I feel as though either someone else alerted him to this or that there was really just a big influx of messages. It must be pretty jarring to get those sorts of messages.

I really doubt he's the only player with the problem, just the one whining about it. When you're able to connect with a lot more ppl, there lot more idiots too.

Also death threats on the internet are nothing. I recieved them and i am a nobody. Matheson is just a slightly higher nobody so he should take it all i stride. Anonymity breeds stupidity.

Here's the replay of what happened to Petterson, at least according to some posters around here:

Wrong highlight buddy.

Looks similar, maybe if they weren't on top of the cage.
Actually, one of them is a far more aggressive throwing motion.
