Waived: Mikael Samuelsson

The source would be the CBA, but here's a link to the NYR capgeek page to give you an idea of what the cap implications are when a player is traded: http://capgeek.com/rangers/tracker/

Look at Kevin Klein. In a vacuum, his cap hit is $2.9M, but this season, his cap cost to the Rangers overall salary will be roughly $1.2M.

That's the amount the team has to pay, not the number that counts against the cap. A team needs a full 3M to claim Samuelsson.

and thats what I wanna see kenny deal with

expectations shouldn't be too high. teams that may have taken a flier on guys like Tootoo, Eaves, or even Sammy (Vancouver was desperate enough to try to revive Vinny Prospal) are pretty much capped out, and the Wings don't have space to take salary back. I think it's more likely someone does get hurt in practice and goes on ltir (eh, Sammy? better than riding buses in GR, right?).

Just got home from an 11 hour day, and could not have got better news. Well technically, waiving Bert would be better news, but this is still great!

Great day for the Wings, and we didn't even play. Sammy waived, Franzen cleared to play, Buffalo beat Columbus, Philly lost, Ottawa lost, Habs getting smoked and Toronto losing by a goal late in the 3rd. Only bad thing was Carolina picking up 2 points, but it resulted in Ottawa getting none, so I'll take it.

I think it was pretty much a no brainer for Kenny considering he needs the roster spot with players coming back. It's not like Sammy was playing. I'm just hoping Babcock chooses to play the best players moving forward.

So you can pick up a 6M player at the deadline if you only have 2M in cap space?

Can somebody give an actual source for this? Not capgeek lol

from the nhl(dot)com, pro rated salary..

The salary that is charged against a team's cap is the pro rated amount remaining of the
player's average yearly salary. For example, if a player has an average yearly salary of $2 million, the amount charged against the acquiring team's cap is the pro-rated amount remaining of $2 million.

This is calculated by dividing $2 million by the number of days in the season (186). The
amount ($10,753) is then multiplied by the number of days remaining in the season from the day the trade is made (42 days if trade is on Feb. 28) to ascertain the amount charged against the team's cap ($451,613).

Yes. Source, these boards at every trade deadline for the past 6 years. Your cap hit is the amount of days left in the season as a percentage to your AAV cap hit. Hence, trading a 6mil cap hit player at the deadline for a fraction of his AAV.

Wow, waking up this morning, it's good news. I think that Jurco - Sheahan have impressed enough to warrant not being sent down after Franzen is good to go. Common sense has prevailed!

And how exactly do we use that 5 million in cap space without trading some of those young guys we all want in the line-up?

Also, what do we do when we have a rash of injuries like we've had this year...you can only break in so many rookies at a time.

Pulkinnen has put up decent #'s in Grand Rapids this year but I doubt he's ready for the NHL, Callahan might be worth a look but I doubt he's much of an upgrade on either 3, and after that there's a huge drop off as far as players ready for NHL duties.

Holland can't win...when he doesn't use his cap space he's criticized for leaving it free and when he does use it he gets flak because he doesn't use it how some fans wanted it spent.

Well when Holland created this cluster he mentioned making trades to clear up the log jam. The only problem is the guys he wanted to trade had no trade value. So he's had to waive them. With that being the case even Kenneh doesn't agree with you. He put himself in this position and by doing so he prevented guys like Tatar and Nyquist from helping this club win hockey games. Callahan and Ferraro could have easily served as short term injury replacements.

So in my opinion there's really no justification for keeping guys like Sammy, Bert, Cleary, et al on the roster with ridiculous salary cap hits relative to their "performance". It's bogus depth and that's been proven by their contributions this season. That's why I call them the Walking Dead.
