No local offer. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, deal was struck in principle over weekend of Jan. 5-6, sources told Y! By then, Sacramento mayoral bid to find local group was too late.

hence KJ going directly to the NBA with his offer.

You can pretty much guarantee that a NHL team will have a name that is connected to the region. Hell the oilers are named after the oil in that province

Deal calls for Maloofs to get $30 mil non-refundable deposit by Feb. 1. But approval for Seattle expected with NBA eager to end this saga

NHL as confirmed to Renaud Lavoie they will never play at Key arena

Bill Daley was on Prime Time Sports last year and basically said there was no difference between Key Arena and America West Arena (temp facility used by the Coyotes). The NHL has always said Key Arena could not a permanent home, but hasn't ruled it out as a temporary facility.

Well they said this to Renaud Lavoie of RDS, who for some reason that i dont understand (cause i dont like the guy) has been the one getting all the scoop (Bob Mackenzie Style), and was designated the french news breaker by the NHL, was told that the NHL would never play a game there.

If its just one person saying that might not be necessary true. I rather hear it from multiple people that Key arena is a no go as temp facility.

Yeah, anyway i doubt the NBA and NHL would come in the same year. Would not be good for any of the two teams.

Not required anyways. The earliest i could see NHL in Seattle via Coyotes would be 14-15 season thats if a group is forum and negotiations are started this year.

There is a difference. Key Arena is worse. I can't see that being viable.

Tacoma Dome is no great shakes, either, but that's at least a slightly viable possibility.

Tacoma dome is out. MOU says NHL if they come before the new arena is built has to play at Key Arena.

Key Arena can be used as a temp facility.

Back in the mid 90s Key Arena went through a remodeling project for the Sonics. these changes destroyed the sight lines and fitting a hockey rink.

The Seattle WHL team played in Key Arena until a suburban arena opened and they moved there.

Can you...sure....but there will be poor sight lines.

Another option would be in Portland at the Rose Garden.

They have 2 smaller arenas with better sight lines that the WHL teams currently play in. both arenas are under 10,000 in seating.

also the Tacoma Dome can accomodate NHL games. During the Key arena mid 90s face lift that killed the sight angles...the NBA played in the Tacoma Dome. It has a larger capacity.

Hopefully Phil cleans out those meat heads on that Sac roster. Holy crap they remind me of a less talented version of the Jail Blazers.

Not true. The Tacoma Dome can be a temp home for hockey.

They do not have to play at Key Arena. There are other places they could play.

As a method to establish a fan base in the region they could take a loss and do some games outside of immediate Seattle such as the arena in Spokane, Portland, and other cities.

MOU clearly says NHL will play in Key arena. Tacoma dome doesn't have its ice equipment anymore and Tacoma dome is way too far south for the fanbase and they would be dealing with rush hour traffic on I-5 which can be very terrible in tacoma.

If Edmonton moved to Seattle that would be like Quebec moving to Colorado. Getting a team right on the verge of something big.

Maloofs agree on deal to sell Kings
Updated: January 21, 2013, 10:52 AM ET
By Marc Stein | ESPN.com

The Maloof family that owns the Sacramento Kings has reached an agreement to sell the controlling interest in the franchise to a Seattle group intent on moving it in time for next season.

Sources told ESPN.com that NBA teams were formally notified Sunday night that the Kings have been valued at $525 million and that the Maloofs and a group led by hedge-fund manager Chris Hansen have executed a purchase and sale agreement, which the NBA confirmed through a statement Monday morning.

The Seattle group intends to file for relocation by the league's March 1 deadline.

Although the sale still requires formal league approval, ownership transfers typically go through when they reach this phase.

The agreement to transfer the 65 percent majority stake in the Kings to the Seattle group headed by Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer represents the 53 percent owned by the Maloofs and an additional 12 percent from minority owner Bob Hernreich.

The NBA announced Monday: "The proposed transaction is subject to the approval of the NBA Board of Governors and has been referred to the Board's committee process for review."

Sources said that there has not yet been an agreement submitted on the remaining 35 percent of the franchise, which is held by minority shareholders, not the Maloofs.

"We have always appreciated and treasured our ownership of the Kings and have had a great admiration for the fans and our team members," Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof said in a statement on behalf of the family. "We would also like to thank Chris Hansen for his professionalism during our negotiation. Chris will be a great steward for the franchise."

One source close to the process told ESPN.com's J.A. Adande that the Maloof family, as it was hoping, will retain a "small piece" of minority interest in the franchise after its expected relocation to Seattle and renaming as the SuperSonics for next season. It's believed, though, that the Maloofs will hold no decision-making power once control of the franchise is transferred.

The deal, according to sources familiar with the specifics, calls for the Maloofs to receive a non-refundable $30 million deposit from the Seattle group by Feb. 1. The NBA, furthermore, is fully expecting Hansen to apply for relocation to Seattle for the 2013-14 season by the league's March 1 deadline, enabling the league's board of governors to vote on the application at their annual April meeting.

From the MOU

The Parties anticipate that an NHL Team will be committed to play in the Arena after the date on which the NBA Team is acquired and committed to play in the Arena. ArenaCo anticipates that it will proceed with the Project and, if necessary, operate the Arena during the period between the acquisition of the NBA Team and the NHL Team. The Parties recognize that the value of the Arena to the City and the County will be greater upon the commitment of an NHL Team to play in the Arena. In connection with the foregoing, the Public Financing shall only be committed in accordance with the following installments:

(i) First Installment: On the Closing Date, in an amount equal to the fair market value of the Project Site (as determined and provided for in Section 8, but in no event to exceed $100 million) paid to ArenaCo (“First Installmentâ€).

(ii) Second Installment: On the Transfer Date, a second installment (“Second Installmentâ€) in an amount determined as follows: (a) if all of the conditions related to an NHL Team set forth in (b) of this Section 10.(ii) have not been satisfied by the Transfer Date, an additional amount supported by the Base Rent and a stabilized level of Arena Tax Revenues that will be based on projections of future tax revenue that take into account long term variables such as team performance and economic conditions in a manner that will be provided in the Umbrella Agreement and Transaction Documents, up to $145 million less the amount paid to ArenaCo in the First Installment, which Second Installment will be comprised of funds (X) first paid to the SODO Transportation Infrastructure Fund,

as described in Section 11, in an amount up to $40 million to bring the total amount deposited in the SODO Transportation Infrastructure Fund (considering only deposits of Arena Tax Revenues and Key Arena Taxes) to a total of $40 million, and (Y) then paid to ArenaCo in an amount not to exceed a total of $120 million, or (b) if by the Transfer Date an NHL Team license agreement committing the NHL Team to play its
home games in the Arena has been executed, together with a non-relocation agreement as described in Section 18 and any other necessary agreements with the City and the County related to the NHL Team, and the NHL has acknowledged the Arena Use Agreement and the non-relocation

agreement and has approved locating the NHL Team in Seattle, an amount equal to $200 million less the amount paid to ArenaCo in the First Installment, which will be comprised of funds (X) first paid to the SODO Transportation Infrastructure Fund in an amount up to $40 million to bring the total amount deposited in the SODO Transportation Infrastructure Fund (considering only deposits of Arena Tax Revenue and Key Arena Taxes) to a total of $40 million, and (Y) then the balance paid to ArenaCo.

17. Key Arena.

a. Use of Key Arena. Prior to completion of the Arena, any NBA and NHL franchise owned by ArenaCo or by an affiliate of or major investor in ArenaCo, or that has committed to play its home games in the Arena, will have the option to play their home games in Key Arena. During the tenancy of any such NBA or NHL teams at Key Arena, ArenaCo will cause certain improvements to be made to Key Arena, and those improvements which are of a permanent nature, which may include modernization of the telephone, data and broadcast "backbones" of the arena, as well as refurbishment and minor renovation to the event-level locker rooms and other spaces, will remain behind after the Arena is completed and opens and will become the property of the City.

An announcement from Chris Hansen (Sonics Arena):

We are happy to announce that we have entered into a binding agreement with the Maloofs to purchase a controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings NBA franchise. The sale is obviously subject to approval by the NBA Board of Governors, and we look forward to working with the League in the coming months to consummate the transaction.

While we are not at liberty to discuss the terms of the transaction or our plans for the franchise given the confidential nature of the agreement and NBA regulations regarding public comments during a pending transaction, we would just like to extend our sincerest compliments and gratitude toward the Maloof family. Our negotiations with the family were handled with the utmost honor and professionalism and we hope to continue their legacy and be great stewards of this NBA franchise in the coming years and decades.

I found this quite interesting:

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/fyi-guy/2013/01/15/with-worse-fan-support-than-spokane-can-seattle-get-its-nba-mojo-back/

I'm sure there are enough hard core NBA fans to fill an arena but what is general fan interest in the NBA going to be like in Seattle?

No ****? Interest in the NBA fell after their team was essentially stolen from them?

Sorry, but that's a garbage article for obvious reasons. The Sonics relocated for one reason and one reason only, Stern and the NBA wanted to send a message that they'd even revoke a well-supported team if the city didn't get behind funding a new arena. Seattle was used as a message to make sure that other markets had something to fear if they didn't kowtow to demands for public funding. The fact that they're so willingly, and eagerly, going to approve a return to Seattle just a few years later is clear that they're not at all worried about fan support.

The interest will absolutely be there in a return of the Sonics. The only reason they had lower attendance is because, get this.... they had a small arena! Percentage wise, they were drawing well into the top half. They're not the Bulls or the Lakers or the Knicks in terms of fan support, and nobody would dare claim otherwise, but they were nowhere near the bottom as some like to pretend they were. They got a raw deal with their new ownership that was interested from day one to relocate and the League was fully behind that, too.

If you ever get the opportunity, check out SonicsGate on Youtube. I'd give a link, but Youtube's blocked at my office.
