You take away his shot, you neutralize him in playoffs.

He's more than his shot. But also, taking away his shot is not as simple as that. Teams are trying it all the time and still he's leading the league in goals.

this thread had me thinking. last year it was no debate Matthews was better than Barkov. it was all Matthews vs Eichel. now that Matthews is quite obviously better than him, and Barkov is having a better year, Barkov is the new Eichel. could even say the same about Pastrnak.

Even if Barkov is the total package. Matthews is scoring at a pace that barely seen in this era.
Also one of a select few players in this era that get the chance to post 9-7-16 in 8 games against Ottawa including 8-4-12 in 4 home games with hand picked matchups. Hard to compare this year to a normal NHL season.

Well we could go back and include last years totals as well, but that would be even worse for Barkov sooo...maybe we should just stop the excuses.

Agreed, it's just like Florida getting to play Detroit 9 times a year.

Some people call excuses by another name: "context". Matthews is a phenomenal goal scorer playing with elite linemates but we don't need to reach for some misleading comparisons to exaggerate that. Take out Ottawa (who is allowing the 2nd most GA/GP in the 21st century) and Matthews is pacing for 98.

Barkov is pacing for....98. With guys the Leafs didn't even want on their AHL team in Carter Verhaeghe and Mason Marchment on the wings. Playing elite defense.

It's ok to acknowledge context.

Ottawa is allowing the 2nd most GA/GP in the last 20 seasons. Detroit is allowing the 2nd most in their own 8 team division in 2021. I think your math is off.

So context to you is take out the games from 1/5 of the games in the season just to match Barkov's totals? Those are excuses.

Matthews has had at least one multi-goal game against every team in the North Divison. Every team. His consistentcy is what sets him apart not the beating up on weaker teams.

My context is throwing out an outlier. This is a common process in data analysis.

Barkov has been held pointless in 9 of 36. Matthews in 9 of 38. Not sure consistency is setting him apart from anyone.

I'm just curious if you play in the nhl? Because the people who voted on the espn poll said Matthews' is ahead of barkov. So context or excuses, you can think whatever you want. But it just seems ridiculous that you believe to know more than those in the league... .context;)

He's also doing so being an amazing two-way player. No I don't think he is better than Barkov defensively, but he's closer to him than he is to your average decent center defensively. Add his goal scoring on top of that and you have a very rare and dominant player.

They are neck and neck offensively while barkov is better defensively.

Not sure why some leaf fans think these results are so crazy lol its almost 50-50.
