I mean a 1 year extension makes him an RFA during the expansion draft and might book Krug's ticket out of town I do it if I am him.

Only one game in, but I'm if we're going to see the pairing of Gryz-McAvoy sooner rather than later. Or maybe sprinkled into certain in-game situations here and there.

This guy's skating has always been good but I swear he's taken another big step this year. The turns are absolutely sublime and he's playing with all kinds of confidence.

Criminal that the guy has less than full page here. Nice write-up from Fluto in the Athletic today:

Torey Krug has options. If the unrestricted free agent-to-be does not consider the Bruins’ offer to be acceptable, he will not have trouble lining up a job on July 1, 2020. By rule, a player’s price goes up when 30 other teams participate in the bidding, instead of one.

The Bruins have options too.

Nobody wants Krug to leave. Not the Bruins, not Bruce Cassidy, not Krug himself.

But if Krug believes the term and salary he will command on the free market make it worth leaving a good situation, Matt Grzelcyk will be first in line to assume some of the 28-year-old’s responsibilities.

According to a three-game snapshot, courtesy of Krug’s absence due to injury, Grzelcyk would not leave the Bruins significantly shorthanded.

“Excellent. Excellent,” Cassidy said of Grzelcyk’s performance during the Bruins’ 4-2 win over Toronto on Friday. “We know Grizz has some of that in him. He’s not Torey yet, offensively. Is there a chance down the road he could be? We’re all hoping that.”

Life after Torey Krug? Matt Grzelcyk gives the Bruins...

Do folks still think Gryz can't be a realistic replacement for Krug?

Gryz is faster, better defensively (leads the defense in on ice sv pct), is just starting to showcase what he can do offensively, and will probably cost half of what Krug costs.

After his second goal it struck me just how different his and Krug's games are.

Grzelcyk isn’t expendable. He’s a core player in my opinion and a big part of why the Bruins have such a good defense. Hopefully he starts shooting more because he can snipe.

Replace in what way? Being an elite powerplay weapon? Not a chance.

Meaningful top four minutes as part of an elite defence corps? Dude is already there.

I meant replace him as a top4 D on an elite defense, but I'm not convinced he can't be a power play weapon either. He sees so little time there... I think he's just starting to flex his offensive muscles.

He doesn't have Krug's chops offensively, not to say he's not capable, but Krug is an elite offensive player.

That being said, it's starting to look like that the Bruins may just have to make a choice between one or the other. Gryz is going to command a decent dollar as an RFA if he continues on his pace he may crack double digits in goals and nearly 40 points from the back-end with minimal PP time. I don't know how they'll be able to afford both guys if Gryz keeps playing the way he has this year.

Grizz may have a place on the powerplay, but I reject the notion that Krug is just another guy there or that he is easily replaced. I've seen that a lot on the boards that "if so-and-so only did this and this other guy did more here, Krug's production would be entirely mitigated".

No. If Krug goes, make no mistake, we will miss him. Grzelcyk's ascent or nay. It's probably the smart play however.

I think if you’re comparing what each player brings to the team, they’re pretty close in value. Krug brings elite offense with average to below average defense, while Grzelcyk has above average offense and defense. I think they’re similarly good in transitioning the puck from defense to offense.

I wouldn’t say Grzelcyk can replace what Krug brings, but I do think he can be just as valuable as Krug in the top 4.

The Bruins PP is what got them to the Cup Final. It's RISKY. I think you are right but it's RISKY.
