How can you tell? The Leafs are the only team in the NHL to try it. They have only played 10 games, so clearly no one finalize their opinion on them. Manchester City and Liverpool have both done well with 4 players making more than 40m though. What criteria are you using?
Whether there's a salary cap?

Toronto
BTW, it appears that Tampa and the Pens are getting similar negative PP to PK ratios. This isn't only a Leafs' problem. And it's only a recent issue.

I will say that this team is ridiculously talented. They are so talented that they have a decent record despite the absolutely comatose way they are playing right now. If they can time the roll and get serious they will be really good and could do some serious damage.

No, there seems to be no evidence that they are interested in doing that.

That would be something, but there is no evidence. In the NHL, the Leafs are trying it, but they are only 10 games in- no one can draw a conclusion from that, so we have to look to other sports where it has been tried and get several years of data.

Simple minded thread title.
It seems pretty silly to pile all the blame on Marner last night.
1st goal was inexcusable but after that he didn't stand out as being any worse than the rest of the team.
OT was on all 3 for staying out too long and Matthews with the terribly timed give away.

Thankfully Andersen started or this game gets no where near OT.

Why do people believe there is a conspiracy against Toronto? Why would anyone want to screw mlse out of millions and millions of dollars? It doesn't make sense.
No conspiracy but looks like defensive referees scared to look pro Toronto

The players we pay big money to have trouble sustaining an entire game.
Focus and intensity. Plus they haven't proved to be the greatest without the puck.
When you are getting the most minutes, this is a problem in terms of support.

Our forward depth has been good in terms of Moore/Kerfoot/Mich/Timo etc but we need to be harder to play against at the top.
Our D is still suspect.
We need a reliable backup.

McGuire and Amber had some interesting takes on this team.

Pierre referred to it as "the tour de France", cycling. This team cannot stop the cycle in it's own end.

How many times in the past month has this team been pinned in it's own end to the point where they are gassed and either take a penalty or give up a goal ?

The forwards are dangerous when they have time and space. Too bad other teams decide not to give it to them.

To me it's simply intensity. Far too many ridiculous giveaways and puck fumbles and that includes guys like Rielly, Muzzin, Marner, and Nylander. Once again we're top-5 in the league in giveaways (we're also top-5 in takeaways, but still). If Colorado is our comparable, they have the lowest amount of giveaways in the league right now.

Our 34 goals allowed is dead last in the league. You won't get anywhere in this league with a bottom-5 GA. Even Edmonton has only allowed 20 GA through 9 GP so far (to our 34 through 10).

The bizarre thing is they're not trying to stop it. Time and space is the highest issue with our coverage, it's like they're scared to leave the slot which just leads to everyone standing still expecting the other to do something

My first order of business would be to package Nylander + Ceci/Barrie (choose who you like) and get a solid top 4 D signed beyond this year. A Dumba in Minnesota would be ideal. That right there is 9.5 to 11 million. We need more sustainability on the back end. We give up far too many GA. Tavares is injured and we don't even have the money to call up.

Then you can shop for a decent backup. Someone who can run with the ball if Andersen stumbles, not someone who makes us go OMG it's his turn.

Then find another forward with decent skill who is hard to play against. Also good without the puck and can forecheck on the line with Matthews/Johnsson.

We have 3 10 million dollar forwards but this team is still not hard to play against. It is not feasible to build a team that needs to win 6-5.

How long before it is too early to identify the players who are letting the team down?

Right now this is not a good team, which is determined by positive results.

Their lack of defensive ability is on display most games.

Maybe they show up tonight and play for the crest.

After last night, I can't see it. They might be in for a whooping tonight.

The money is committed to Matthews/Marner/Nylander who all suffer from the same affliction.
JVR/Kessel syndrome. As skilled as they can be at times, the can be just as lost, unfocused, missing, WTF in each and every game. Watch players like MacKinnon, Draisaitl, Rantanen, etc. and see the difference.

That's too much of the cash committed to the same affliction. We need some harder to play against, less likely to zone out money in the system.
Once again, we are on pace to give up even more goals than last year. It's been rising every year. The genetic makeup needs adjustment. Better D, another solid 2 way player on the Matthews wing, dependable goaltending and players who play with attention to detail. Too many stars aloof.

Too much stick checking and no taking out of their man. I cannot believe Babcock has let this go on for so long. Makes me think he has checked out and I would pull the trigger if I could get Budreau. I am not sold on Keefe because he is a disciple of Dubas.

The Leafs will not win with Babcock as the coach. Players hate him...and for good reason. He takes some pride is screwing over players ala Commodore and Modano.

Dubas is the worst GM in hockey. And, the other GM's are not happy with Dubas raising the cap bar substantially forcing them to up what they have to play mediocre players.

I like Shanny but come on, someone screwed the pooch on Babcock and Dubas.
