We are carrying 8 d right now and we are trying to see what we have in all of them early on.

Also Nilsson is playing because even though Talbot has been the best Oiler, you don't want a goalie losing too many in a row, bad for the confidence

Apart from seeing how McDavid-Yak fair, I want to see how this D does against one of the elite forward groups in the WC. It'll be interesting to see if they can hold their own like they did against Nashville.

First real test for Davidson and Nilsson. I'd have preferred to see Reinhart but Davidson should also be interesting to watch.

TEAM 1260 said Yak is playing with McDavid today. It was the morning show.

Anybody hear Rishaug talk about some weird drill they were doing and how it's almost impossible for the PP to score?

TM asked everybody who thinks they can score on the PP to go to the other side of the ice and McDavid was the only one who went while the rest of the PP crew sat on the bench lol

This sounds odd, but I hope its true.

The Oilers score two in the first, everyone breathes a sigh of relief. 6-3 Oilers.

McDavid, Yakupov, Hall, Slepyshev, Schultz, RNH (EN)

It wasn't quite like that...and it's actually something that's been around for awhile.

The 2nd unit was on practicing the PP against the appropriate penalty killers. TM asked the first PP unit, while standing around, whether they thought the 2nd unit would score or that the PK would do a better job. Those that thought they would score to go to the penalty box side, those that thought the PK would work, stay by the bench.

McD went to the penalty box side and the rest stayed by the bench. (The PK won by the way)

I guess it showed how much confidence (or lack of) that the #1 unit had in the #2 unit to score....or something like that.

No big deal..

Interesting. I doubt it's true (and if it it is speaks rather poorly of the confidence of our other offensive stars), but if it is...that's straight out of a movie. If the plot continues, McDavid will score on the PP against Dallas and lead us the playoffs. We throw the C on him next summer.

This could happen, right? Please? Please?

He wrote about this yesterday

Something intriguing happened while they were working with the second power play unit at practice Monday. McLellan had the other players pick who they thought would win the drill. Those who thought the penalty kill would win stayed by the benches, players who thought the power play would score, skated to the penalty box side. The coach will usually make the ones who guess wrong skate back and forth a few times. It's a fun team building wrinkle added to a regular drill.

Connor McDavid was the only Oiler to skate to the far side of the ice, and bet on his fellow power play specialists. The rest of the team, including members of the first PP unit (Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Pouliot, Schultz) stayed on the bench side betting on the penalty kill, who the drill clearly favoured. McDavid could not openly bet against his fellow power play unit, even if it meant he was standing all by himself, getting a few jeers from teammates.

In the end, the penalty kill dominated the drill, and McLellan chose not to make McDavid skate on his own, but that's beside the point. The entire power play should have been on the penalty box side, the penalty killers on the bench side, each supporting their fellow units. McDavid was the only one who got that. It was a subtle sign of natural leadership from him.

Good on Connor

Stars lines. Notice they have players like Benn + Eaves to get Seguin the puck and then they have Roussel + Sharp to get Spezza the puck. Hell even Janmark + Eakin to get Hemsky the puck.

I want to see a pp of.

Slepyshev-RNH-McDavid
Schultz-Klefbom

Put RNH on the goal line/in front of the net and let McDavid run the PP off the half wall. Slepyshev has shown he has a cannon and we can use him effectively.

Second unit of.

Hall-Lander-Yakupov
Sekera-Schultz

Keep Schultz out for 2 minutes or put another forward out there.

Stars are crazy deep up front wow

Assuming that Sharp and Spezza will do much at this point but yeah.

I have to be wondering though whether Sharp getting out of the glare of compete in Chicago is a form of retirement for him. He was fading off there and definitely having trouble keeping with the pace of an elite team. This gives him a couple more years but I wonder at what level and intensity.

Anyway Stars are a real vet squad for people that like that kind of thing. Will be another team that makes the WC playoff race really really tough.

Per Stauffer, Hall not on the ice for the morning skate. Korpikoski moves up. Blech.
Edit: Hall is ill, apparently.

Yet people want to run him out of town without a replacement in line. We have a fourth liner playing on the 2nd line with him out FFS.
