Lets give some credit to the Ottawa Senators

This certainly is not a "quiet brag" thread or an "I told you so" thread. But with perhaps the most tumultuous two seasons in franchise history now in the rear view mirror, and expectations at an all time low, the Sens have quietly come out smelling like roses so far this season.

DJ Smith has started to change the culture in Ottawa into one of a hardworking, blue collar team that makes teams pay physically. Aside from a small handful of games this season, they have been right there in every game, and rarely look like they are getting badly outworked. The shots against have finally started to taper down too - they were they worst in the league for several years straight. This is something that the last 4 coaches have tried and failed to do for the Sens, so its definitely noteworthy for Sens fans. And most of all, hes not afraid to bench vets.

Winning games is a bit of a divisive issue among Sens fans right now considering the need to get a high draft pick this year. But I dont think anyone expects them to keep winning games consistently, especially not once they start trading off guys like Pageau before the TDL (who has inflated his value to that of a 1st round pick at this point).

Who would have thought in a million years that after 22gp, the Sens would have 10 wins to Toronto's 9 (in 23gp :sarcasm:). Go Sens Go :thumbu:

There's another thread about this:

As for the topic, it's amazing how great you can smell when expectations are so low it boggles the mind.

Good goaltending has helped mask the putrid PP.

But it's been surprisingly fun and entertaining for the most part this year to be a Senators fan.

They play hard every night and that allways gets you some wins even if you have less talent than most opponents. If you are not ready to play the Sens they can and probably will beat you. Can't just expect to show up and get your win . They are not tanking , they don't have a great roster but that doesn't mean they don't want to win games.

They'll probably tail off a bit later in the season especially if they sell of some guys at the deadline but this is not a dead team.

The kids don't know they're supposed to be bad.

Again, I think the grind will take care of that though.

Ottawa>Toronto on 3/4 the budget,

it’ll be interesting to see what they do with Pageau

I don't really have a clue at this point. He's making a formerly obvious decision a lot more complicated.

Heart says keep as a leader and role model to a young team (Captain?) and brain says trade while his value is high.

27th in the league, and even that entirely on the back of one player's insanely lucky stretch, is "smelling like roses"?

They are 23rd in the league. Rangers and Tampa will likely pass them with the games they have less, but Senators can catch both Calgary and Toronto with the games they have in hand. While Pageau is having and unexpected good season they also have a player like White who have had a bad start with some injuries that will likely improve. They are doing better than expected right now. Which actually might be bad for them as while the Sens have quite good depth they are lacking top end talent up front and want to draft high.

Still it is pretty impressive for a team who right now have active players (13F-7D-2G) with contracts worth 46,7 million and they still are making teams work hard to beat them.

Good idea to send the message to the rest of the team that if you step up your game for the team when they call on you to play a bigger role, you get rewarded by being traded away.

Well, it's not a coincidence that a lot of players play their best hockey in a contract year.

Pageau is in a bit of a unique situation because last season was supposed to be his opportunity to step up but he missed half the season due to that injury in camp.
